  • At different stages in our lives, we can be impacted by an act of aggressive violence that goes deep into the very soul of our being. It doesn't always need to be toward us - it can be to others too.
This vlog started just after I was attacked by a middle-aged runner. This was because of a brief altercation where he forced two small children and their mother off the official cycle path when he could and should have moved to his rightful lane to allow them to continue on the safety of a designated and mandatory cycleway where they were well protected.
After confronting him very briefly with no raised voice or swearing changed my life through an act of intentional aggression. I want to explain why and some of what resulted in this vlog here.

Having been an EMT and ski patroller for the past 30 years I find your blog an excellent description of the recovery process. Broken ribs can be, and are treated, as a very serious, and possibly, life threatening injury. Thankfully you were in good physical condition leading up to the injury. As a further note, here in the US, an assault on an individual 65 or older garners serious felony charges.

I very rarely comment on any video, but I want to tell you Mr Sellers; that you have been a golden beacon of education and inspiration for me ever since I discovered your content as a young man about 13 years ago. Back then I spent most of my evenings watching your videos and I practised what I learnt from you as much as I could in my own time. You have helped me massively in becoming what I am today; a passionate and quality Joiner (with much more to learn, of course!). I'm disappointed and angry about what happened. I'm glad you're OK and bouncing back, and I hope it cheers you up to know how much of a difference you've made to my life, and I'm sure many others too!

Sir, your messages here are both gutting and uplifting. Your message about healthcare workers and Good Samaritans are proof that goodness exists among us and your description of drawing buds is an enlightening reminder to seek beauty in our everyday travels.
The fact that someone assaulted you is deeply disturbing and infuriating. I feel for you. It’s a stark reminder that our actions have consequences beyond the moment. I hope there is justice for the incident and something in the universe makes that person realize his actions are not okay. I am tempted to wish for that to experience equal or greater pain than he inflicted upon you, but I don’t believe that is healthy for us to hold grudges or perpetuate a cycle of violence. I do hope that person is held accountable for their actions and learns from their pitiful malfeasance.
I’m sorry you had to endure such an evil event and painful recovery. I admire your courage to share with us your thoughts and emotions. I respect deeply your positivity, your commitment to your health, and the kindness from within that exudes through every second of your decades of videos, every page of your texts, every pencil line of yours sketches, and every shaving of your joinery.
    To Your Health!

I like how you see the beauty in what some might consider ordinary things, such as a budding leaf and flower. You show us that we’re all capable of making anything from furniture to cellos if we put our mind to it, and remind us that making is part of what defines us as human beings. You’ve also reminded us that kindness and compassion is more powerful and prevalent than we might realize. Glad to see you’re doing better and I can’t wait to see what you work on next.

As someone who trains fighters, who on occasion have this type of injury. I can tell you that rib injuries are in a special category in terms of recovery time. This is because it is the nature of these bones to flex with our breathing and movement, our ability to move is dependent on this capacity, and as such, while the bones knit, they will be aggravated when you push them too far. I will tell you that it can take 2-3 months for the pain to completely subside, to the point where you won't be restricting your movement in fear of the pain. There will also come a time, usually after 3 weeks, where you should be testing your range of motion fairly often. The injury is not only to the ribs, but the connective tissue that joins them together, the joints where the ribs meet the spine, the sternum or cartilage (depending on the rib), and that connective tissue will be tight to begin with. This is the body attempting to protect the injury as it heals. As your healing progresses, it is important to flex this by doing slow, controlled movements, twisting, bending, inhaling deeply, just to make sure you do not lose any range of motion. Then there is the psychological aspect to this. Being assaulted, particularly being ambushed and feeling helpless is a trauma, and it will take time to restore your confidence and sense of security. When I work with students who have been assaulted, it helps to develop a greater awareness of your surroundings, and to have a plan for any similar situation in the future. I wish you a speedy recovery, and I hope they caught the miscreant and jailed him appropriately.

Your body is busy healing itself. God created us in this way! You think you’re not improving as quickly as you want. There’s a lot going on. Until this is finished, your ability to push yourself will be hampered, and may even be detrimental to your recovery. Until you reach a certain point, you and your doctor will determine, don’t push it too much. You’ll get there! I’m confident of that

Your sensibilities about slowing down, allowing yourself to heal, and being honest with your mental health along the way is inspiring. I hope you continue to heal and rest as needed.
I don't know the situation, only what you've shared and I have no idea what justice is because it will not erase the injury or replace the time healing, but I do know peace and I hope you find it. Thank you, again, for all you've shared.

Stay safe and don't get down. Divert your energies to getting well and doing other things. Keep the mind busy. I am 72 and am recovering from minor surgery on my eyes and doing the usual things of trying to stay in shape. Must be smart.

I'm afraid it may not come across in this collection of videos because things inevitably date and quite quickly. I am recovered and totally back in the saddle and riding fence. My health is good and thank you.

I'm fairly new to your channel, and I have already learned so much from the patient and detailed nature of your woodworking presentations. I am praying for your continued healing and that the hateful criminal responsible for your injuries will be brought to justice. With three broken ribs there is likely a lot of bruising of muscles and such, so, it makes sense that you are experiencing a lot of pain during your recovery. I am happy to hear that you are being careful with the pain medication as it won't alleviate all of the pain and it is extremely toxic to your body and brain generally and to your kidneys specifically.
Your nature drawings and observations are wonderful. I find myself encouraged to practice my own drawing skills and getting out into the natural world more often. God bless you, Brother.

Its easy to do the right thing when you are strong and healthy, you should feel proud that at great risk to yourself you did the right thing.
So many people let bad people prosper by being scared to do the right thing.

I can’t say that I’ve been injured from a malicious assault but I have suffered many broken bones and concussions from having played rugby for exactly 40 years. The difference, I am guessing, is the mental effects that you are suffering from. Bones heal but the mind has a tendency to remember.
I’ve suffered from black dog episodes for the last 50 plus years and, even now. Do not know what triggers them. I do find making - I’ve been woodworking as a hobby for about the same length of time - to be helpful so long as I don’t push myself. When I hear my body or my mind saying “that’s enough” I have learned to listen from it.
To try and get my disabilities into perspective, I think of all those thousands and, perhaps millions, who are so much worse off than me. My disabilities are not life threatening but are life-shortening; yet think of those young people who, through no fault of their own, don’t even get to taste the fruit of adulthood. I try and repay my good or tune by helping out, as best I can, the Royal Marines Charity. I find that good for me and, hopefully, useful to them

Get well soon Paul, I hope you get better soon both physically and mentally. Aside from the fact that you are an inspiration to us struggling woodworkers, you are also a human being and should be able to tell someone they have made the incorrect decision without fear of being assaulted. That runner was probably taking some sort of performance enhancing drug and some of them cause agressive tendencies. I've been there and know what it's like. God bless. Paul.
