Thank you for reacting to this beautiful Pentatonix video. Happy that you enjoyed it. The band formed in an organic manner. Scott (tall blond), Mitch (shorter, dark hair) and Kirstin (female) grew up in Arlington, TX. Kirstin and Mitch met at age 8, Scott and Mitch met at age 10, Scott and Kirstin met in 9th grade English class. They all did musical theater as kids and sang in several choirs. In high school, they formed The Trio in order to enter a singing contest to meet the cast of Glee. They did not win that. They continued to sing and they posted some videos on RUclips. Scott and Kirstin went off to separate colleges. Mitch was still a senior in High School. While a freshman at USC in California, Scott joined famed a cappella group SoCal VoCals to make friends. There he met Ben Bram who was an alum who worked for the TV show, The Sing Off. Scott was interested in being on the show and with Ben's encouragement, he called Kirstin and Mitch to ask them to compete with him. They agreed. Scott found original bass, Avi through a friend of a friend and found Kevin, percussionist, beatboxer, on RUclips when his RUclips video of him playing cello and beatboxing at the same time had gone viral just as Scott was looking for a beatboxer for the band. Kevin was preparing for finals at Yale so he could not say yes right away. After passing his finals and graduating pre-med from Yale, Kevin agreed to join them. They all met the day before the audition. Mitch skipped his high school graduation for the audition. They passed the audition. They competed on and won Season 3 of The Sing Off. That was in 2011. There's lots more, of course, but you seemed interested in how they started. There has only been one member change. Avi, original bass, left in 2017 for personal and family reasons. Matt (white jacket) became their bass October 2017.
Pentatonix is a three time Grammy Award winning Acapella group. Their list of songs, both covers and original is a long one. They are also going to be receiving their star on the Walk of Fame in February this year. They sell out concerts around the world. Will enjoy watching your reactions into this rabbit hole.
Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty")Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair) NOT in this video. , true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on RUclips, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his RUclips videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on RUclips), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on RUclips, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have been nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. They have announced that they will have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame to be installed next year. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.
Subbed for more! The Prayer, Bohemian Rhapsody, any of their “Evolution of” videos, Amazing Grace, Hallelujah, 90’s Dance Medley, or any other song in their over 200+ catalogue. None will disappoint.💕💕
Pentatonix has been singing together for eleven years. Prior to that, the three vocalists in the middle’s sang together in high school as The Trio. They are Scott (baritone), Mitch (countertenor), and Kirstin (mezzo soprano). They added Avi (original bass from 2011 to 2017) and Kevin (beatboxer/tenor/cellist) to form Pentatonix. Matt, (current bass from 2017 to present) is in this video. The only formal audition was for Matt. The rest of them just kind of all got together.
Welcome to PTX. They will never let you down! Pretty much any song will be good. They have original music, covers like this one, Christmas music, and each of them have solo projects, so you can keep very busy reacting to Pentatonix, lol.
Important to know. Since the inception of pentatonix, there has only been one personnel change. That is the young man in the white jacket, who is the bass. Everyone else has been there from the inception.
Welcome to the world of PTX. We who love them are called Pentaholics. We are not looking for a cure. But welcome new members. 😀 They are so talented and have won 3 Grammies. Nominated this year for a 4th. Sold out world tours and over 200 plus songs. Originals and covers each song is fantastic. Every kind of music. Look at their catalog and play us one that interests you
Greg, You REALLY need to wear a headset when listening to Pentatonix. The presence of their sound is enhanced tremendously when you do. What was your MOS?
First time viewer and an instant subscriber. I think that you will find that pentaholics are very passionate about the group and their music. A genuine reaction will win us over every time. They have a lot of covers, we all call them upgrades. Plus some wonderful originals. Suggestions are difficult and easy at the same time. It all depends on what or where you want to start. Bohemian Rhapsody is amazing. Amazing Grace is another go to. The Prayer is epic. No matter what one you do next, you won't be disappointed. They are just that good. Thank you again. I will be here waiting for your next step down this wonderful rabbit hole.
Pentatonix is best known for their Christmas songs. They release a holiday album every year, a mixture of traditional carols, pop Christmas songs from various decades and some non-Christmas songs that celebrate family and friends. But they also have several EPs and albums with covers of pop songs from various genres and decades -- from Motown to pop divas to EDM and K-pop. Most of their albums have one or more original songs and they have two albums of original songs in current pop styles. And all their arrangements are creative, honoring the original while putting their own spin on it. Their early recordings are strictly a capella (except that the beat boxer occasionally plays cello), but in the last couple of years they have experimented more with instruments, vocal effects and editing.
Great reaction and so pleased you enjoyed there cover of this song and are going to react to more of there songs. There is over 200+ songs to choose from and you can’t go wrong with any of them. Great ones to start you off are bohemian rhapsody, daft punk, hallelujah, imagine and mad world. Welcome down the rabbit hole of ptx. New sub here 😊
So happy to have found you, new subscriber, welcome to the wonderful world of PTX! I found them during the pandemic, and I have yet to find a song that is not stellar. These luscious, full anthems are fabulous. Try Hallelujah, Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King and Prayers for This World, a recent release written by the great Diane Warren. For something a little more intimate, try Imagine, Say Something and Mad World. For boppers, try their 90s Dance Medley, Can’t Hold Us and Problem. For pure fun, try Come Along and Making Christmas. Their Grammy winners are Daft Punk, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies and Jolene with Dolly Parton. And just because, try Bohemian Rhapsody and O Come All Ye Faithful. Honestly, whatever title you choose will be good. I enjoyed your reaction very much, and I’m looking forward to more Pentatonix with you. Peace from Ohio … (Sorry to be so long-winded. I like them. A lot.)
Loved your reaction! I am not a religious person but their version of Amazing Grace is so powerful it brings me to tears everytime I watch it. Bohemian Rhapsody is one of my favorites also; Freddie Mercury would have loved it!
Welcome to the PTX journey, it's quite a ride. As well as watching recorded videos watch some live performances so that you can see how great they are live. If you want to watch an original try Sing. If you want to watch Grammy winning performances that's Daft Punk, Jolene and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. If you want to watch mega popular videos best throw in Bohemian Rhapsody and Hallelujah
Greetings from Southern California. Pentaholic here…am I late? 😜 I got here as fast as I could. New sub here for Pentatonix. I see you’re already slipping into the rabbit hole. Welcome. Promise we don’t bite, ok maybe a few do. 😂 I know my fellows will fill you in and probably inundate you with suggestions, so I’m just going to say hi for now. HI 👋🏼 gonna go watch the next one. WOW one a day, definitely falling in.
Every song they do is their “best song”. You have 11 years of songs to choose from. If you like oldies, Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody, or Hallelujah. Since you are a cheer dad, you might like their cover of “Cheerleader”. Original music “Sing”, “Can’t Sleep Love” or “Anchor”. Headphones!
Warning -- Pentatonix's label and Vevo are very aggressive about blocking reactions. You may not be having trouble yet, but as you get more subscribers it will be a problem. For most reactors the block is triggered by the video, and they get around it by altering the video -- making the display size small, changing the aspect ratio, increasing the transparency, and / or overlaying a graphic or text. The fans are used to it. You can also react to some audio-only videos. Pentatonix only does official videos for a fraction of their songs, but they are all worth hearing. OR, there are some good-quality live versions that may or may not get blocked.
I've seen other comments regarding headphones/buds and will add my recommendation for that as well. They have such subtle nuances to their music that you can only hear with headphones (panning etc). In my opinion, a big part of their appeal is that they seem to really enjoy working with each other. It helps of course that three of them went to school together! Subbed for more PTX reactions.
Matt on the left came to the group after Avi went to do his own thing. Kirstin,Scott and Mitch have known each other since they were 10 and went to school together. Kevin they found on RUclips playing the cello and beat boxing at the same time. Listen to their version of The Prayer.
You ain't seen nothing yet....this is the world's best acapella group (they revolutionized this genre to make it mainstream). FYI...the 3 middle singers have known each other since 8-9 years old; they have 20 MILLION RUclips subscribers with 7+ billion views; won 3 Grammys (currently nominated for another: 5 World Tours with sellout events; numerous Platinum albums. dozens and dozens of concerts; also dozens and dozens of TV shows. Welcome to the rabbit hole of Pentatonix. SUGGESTION...you will greatly enjoy their videos with headphones !!! Be prepared for an onslaught of subscribers...
They just recently sang the National Anthem at the college football championships. There aren't too many PTX reaction videos from veterans (that I know of), so I would really like to see your reaction to this.
🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧 A must when listening to any of the acapella groups. You are missing so many layers. Yes this next comment is snarky but somebody reacting to music videos without headphones is like a food critic doing a write-up on a meal without ever having tasted it 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧
I think for a newbie to PTX you should check out Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Daft Punk(Won Emmy), and the Evolution Of(music, Michael Jackson, 90’s, etc.) When they do medley’s their transitions from song to song is like nothing I have ever heard. They are outstandingly talented individually but can also blend together flawlessly. To get “Mitch slapped” you should check out Aha! Singapore The Star Vista. Going down this rabbit hole is well worth it. Also, Avi Kaplan, their bass, left the group in 2017. You should check out his solo music.
Your not watching/hearing Pentatonix if your not wearing headphones. You will need to re listen to this. Shame, I was excited about a first time reaction.
You react to Pentatonic (PTX) you will get more subscribers! We're kind of obsessed! (I, also, recommend the headphones or good ear buds!) Literally hundreds of videos for you to see!
You need headphones and we need you to have headphones. Please get headphones and listen to it again. I hit the subscribe and like. Looking forward to more!
You need to wear headphones when you listen to these guys. More please❣️

Listen to it again, with headphones!
🎧
They just recently sang the National Anthem at the college football championships. There aren't too many PTX reaction videos from veterans (that I know of), so I would really like to see your reaction to this.
im so glad i found this video! believe me or not, im also an oklahoma state fan, and a braves fan, i have the freddie freeman jersey on right now!
Best songs? Lol...every song they do is an upgrade. Try their Daft Punk medley.
It started with Scott, Mitch and Kirsty in high school...

A must when listening to any of the acapella groups.
And yet I was able to......... Thank you for the support
I just subscribed. Loved your reaction can't wait to see you react to more Pentatonix.
To get the best out of their music you really need headphones. It makes a huge difference.
Just a tip...headphones are a must! Truly.
You need to wear headphones to get the awesome sound coming from their mouths.
To get the full effect you really need headphones or you miss a lot, especially the bass. The middle 3 have been singing together since high school.
to appreciate it earphones
I did the Daft Punk one and youtube took it down... That sucked because I liked that song
You really need headphones when listening to theese guys! Try it the next time. 👍
I’d recommend Hallelujah next!
You should check out Hound and the Fox, featuring Adam Chance of Home Free version of Sound Of Silence it's done beautifully
PTX doesn't do covers... They only do upgrades!
You need your headphones for PTX... Ge them on!
You need headphones and we need you to have headphones. Please get headphones and listen to it again. I hit the subscribe and like. Looking forward to more!
Daft Punk, Say Something, Shallow, Mary Did You Know, Imagine, The Prayer, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, just a few of my favorites of theirs.
More PTX, and I'll sub. I promise.
BTW, your sound is ordinary. Headphones and proper audio are a must. Great reaction though.
H you are missing the bass. You really need headphone. It's sounds like a different song.
