2:47 I'm happy that Raspberry Pi finally stopped using individual GPIO cables, I own the original 7" Touch display and the 5v & GND cables always really frustrating.
We decided to default it to portrait because that's it natural orientation (i.e. it is 720x1280 not 1280x720). Which means you require less performance from the Raspberry Pi to display to it in portrait because you don't have to rotate the output image.
@@gordonhollingworth5281 Yeah, it's a good thing. Depending on your usage, you can buy one thing or another. Also, there are probably less touchscreen problems with this configuration.
The Waveshare 8 Inch is very nearly the same physical size but has over 30% more screen area. The wide bezel looks dated and when fitted to a front panel make the visible area look really small

Great shear ty. Any idea what all would be need to use my old tablet monitor as a touch screen for my raspberry PI ? I know theirs driver board's for making old laptop/tablet/phone's in to pc monitors. But what about the touch part ? Any pointers or sources would be great.
I really want to build my own RPi tablet, but the RasPad and similar are just way to thick. The biggest issue is finding a display, which has a Pixel per square inch (and preferably a 4:3 or 8:5 aspect ratio). My aim is to use a CM4, CM5 or other compatible boards, a thin LiPo and a High PPI DSI display to get it into a iPad sized shell. There are no (Fairphone like) repairable tables with ARM or RISC-V CPUs primary tailored for media consumption :(, so DIY is the best option.

Why oh why didn't they shrink bezels and up resolution more? 720 is really bad in this day and era. Yeah I understand that it would've increased prize by few tens. But let's be real. I would've bought this with better specs, but not with these. Any other with same thoughts?
The PI HUT has higher resolution screens but they cost a lot more, the waveshare ones are very nice quality and you can get them in a range of sizes. I ordered one of these bad boys from Pimoroni today and it is perfect for my car-puter project that is going in my sun visor.. I like the big bezels personally because it gives a nice gap between the metal chasis and the edge of the screen, although I get what you are saying.

It's good that it defaults to a certain orientation, mine was backwards from the case, but if it's portrait on a landscape test, that's no issue.

WHY NOT ?
2 reasons: [1] easy to hold on edges & [2] make custom bezel frame casing (I know many will disagree but many use cases actually need this)
