  • Testing out filming video in 950nm infrared. I used a cheap "Green L" brand 950nm filter on my full-spectrum converted Canon EOS M50. Lenses used were the kit 15-45mm EF-M lens, and the pancake 22mm f/2 EF-M.
    It turned out pretty impressive!
    One thing I didn't mention in the video - make sure you disable auto-ISO. With this filter on the camera will boost it an ungodly amount. Looks kinda cool though.
    Note: For clarity, I'm not affiliated with any of the brands discussed in this video. It should be obvious, but for some reason I apparently need to explicitly state it otherwise RUclips thinks I'm profiting/advertising.

    Love to see infrared photographers here on youtube. Rob Shea is a guy I've followed for awhile here and on IG. He's a really good teacher. Even though I have shot mostly 590nm, I've started shooting 720nm and converting to bnw. I love this range, even if it's 850nm. I really am strating to be drawn more to the moodier bnw. Thanks for posting, I look forward to seeing what you have in store for future videos.

      Thanks Peter, your support means a lot! Rob Shea is definitely a master of infrared, I learned a lot of the basics from his videos when I started, particularly when it comes to working with IR in Lightroom. There are certainly a lot of hurdles in processing when first shooting IR. I definitely enjoy the moodier deep IR more than expected, too - considering what drew me to IR in the first place was crazy, surreal false colour! I suppose there's a time and place for everything. Lately I've been using 720nm as well, but keeping the false colour. Seems to be a good balance, and like you said, can always process as B&W!

    Brilliant pictures, just ordered another prestigious brand "Zomeii" or something like that for £15, think if from major brands if produced would cost a little more!!! Cant wait, but sun never appears here in Manchester UK better find my tripod for those 10sec exposures on my unconverted camera! Yeeehaaa!

    Mate cracking footage earned an easy like and sub. I recently had my old Pro-2 modified to shoot 850nm, I'm all about the stills so video generally doesn't bother me I still use a GoPro to film for my channel, BUT last weekend while shooting some IR still I decided to shoot some IR video....man I'm blown away, it looks awesome, even tho' it was handheld and is shaken I parts the footage looks other worldly, I'm editing it for my next upload at the weekend. I'm pretty excited about this IR lark, stills deffo but now for video too. Thanks for the vid I'll be checking in again.

    Thanks for making these videos! IR LEDs are widely available in many wavelengths that you could easily use to test? Look around, you may have to buy a bag of 50 but shouldn't be more than $10 I wouldn't think.

      Never considered that, what a great idea! I'll definitely look into it. It'd be very interesting to test the claims of some of these cheap Chinese filters, haha. I know for certain that the popular 720nm filters rarely seem to be the same across brands, even the more established brands like Hoya etc. Thanks for the suggestion, and thanks for watching!

    Hi , thanks for the video... you converted the camera to full spectrum and then you used 950 filter, my question is do we still need a tripod and long exposure to get any visible image on screen or can we get hand held image ?? Also can you please let me know if we can convert camera exclusively for 950nm, so that no filter is required?

    • @mindrecorder
      @mindrecorder  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching! Good question, I was very surprised to find that even in deep 950nm IR, you can still easily shoot handheld. As long as the sun is out you'll have no problem! I only use a tripod because I have shaky hands, haha.
      As for converting directly to 950nm I'm not really certain, the company that modified my camera (here in Australia) offers conversions down to 880nm with a "Wratten 87A" filter over the camera sensor. I also believe KolariVision offer an 850nm conversion, while LifePixel go as low as 830nm. Any of those would still be pure infrared with black and white images. If you're set on 950nm though it might be worth asking Kolarivision or LifePixel if they can do it, I imagine they probably could. Hope this helps!

    Ciao, scusa io ho acquistato una Nikon D750 e fatta convertire in FullSpectrum (che è ancora in laboratorio per la modifica) , ma come si fa poi a elaborare i video? Userò un filtro IR 720 nm sull'obiettivo (ma vorrei acquistare poi un filtro almeno di 850 nm) Con le foto sono capace ma i video no, possiedo After Effects e Davinci Resolve, posso riuscire con questi Softwear? Grazie per l'eventuale risposta, un caro saluto dall'Italia, Renato

    Hello.. I just received an ir950, I tested it with my Sony a7siii, with ISO at 409000 and the result is disappointing. I don't understand why it looks so good in your video and in mine it looks so infuriatingly dark. I would appreciate any opinion. Greetings and thank you

    Is full spectrum modification a must to use these filters at the ranges between 900nm and 950nm? Or will we get some Light and dark information out of these filters with stock cameras without modification?

    • @mindrecorder
      @mindrecorder  Год назад +1

      Good question, I imagine you wouldn't be able to get anything usable in terms of video, but it might be possible to get photos with a long exposure. I know the stock M50 took about 30-60 seconds exposure to get an IR image with a 720nm filter before I had it modified, so something deeper would presumably take longer (if it registers at all)

    • @absolud
      @absolud Год назад

      @@mindrecorder Good to know. Thank you for the info. I'm tasked with taking images in these ranges above 900nm, but it makes perfect sense now to modify or buy a full spectrum camera if nothing above these ranges would register on stock cameras.

      I asked Canon that same question. Only the Canon Cameras used for astrophotography can be used in IR photography. Those Camera's have the "a" in the name as in the EOS Ra. Otherwise you do have to convert to a full spectrum conversion.
