I have a single stage Powermatic dust collector that also has the 14" diameter like yours and I'm planning to do this type of upgrade as well. I checked out both the Wynn filter kit and the Donaldson P181038 filter as a route to go with this upgrade. I was all set to go with the the Wynn kit that was more expensive, and it came with most of what I would need to install it minus the donut's, but when I saw it was going to cost me north of $30 for shipping I decided against it. I ordered the Donaldson filter and the necessary hardware on Amazon for half the cost with free shipping. I did like watching your video showing your process to adapt this filter to your dust collector, since I will be doing something similar. Nice job on the upgrade!
I added the Wynn to my system about a year ago also. the best upgrade you can make. you can feel the air coming out through the filter while it's running. the other thing I did at that time was add to add an Oneida Dust Deputy, that drops the sawdust into a 30 gallon barrel. much easier to empty a barrel than the bag. my bag still doesn't have a drop of sawdust in it.
Nice job, Ed!!! I made a similar setup to my dust collection system. However, instead of using a band saw or jig saw to cut my donuts, I attached my router to the compass attachment like what you used to mark the circles and used it to cut very nice donuts from plywood with a 1/4” bit in a couple of passes. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you John! I was going to use my CNC, but the working area of my current one is only 15" x 23". This wouldn't fit on it. Guess you could say I went old school on it. ha ha. Take care and have a blessed day! - Ed
It is so much better Billy! I added the cyclone when I first got the dust collector. While it's great at doing what it does, it robbed the suction. Getting rid of the bag in favor of the canister brought back the suction and a lot more. Take care brother! - Ed
Thank you Stephen! Like most of my other shop upgrades, I had to save up for this one too. Waiting for the RUclips big bucks to start rolling in so I can do more upgrades. Guess I shouldn't quit my day job. ha ha. Have a blessed day brother! - Ed
I have the same model dust collector. Rockler sells a 42 inch felt bad rated at 1 micron for $40. This is an inexpensive and very effective upgrade to the original 24 inch bag which is rated at 2.5 microns. The rocker bag is rated at 50 CFM per square foot. So the bag can allow over 1600 cfm of flow. Since the dustcollector itself in "free fan mode" no bags/no hoses can support about 500 cfm, therefore additional filter material will not improve the air flow. Also keep in mind that air flow comparisons between an old dirty or some what dirty bad and a brand new filter can be misleading. A new filter will loose air flow ability over time as it gets dirty. the ability to restore air flow will depend on how easy and effective one is at cleaning the filter.
Hi Ed, I graded up on the same manner with a canister from Record Power for 90 € incl. shipping fromUK. This has an additional spindel to clean up the lamellas inside. It's not the dust collection, it's the dust protection, that makes the upgrade, especially if you do a lot of sawing and sanding in your shop. Regards from Austria
Thanks for this video! I want to make a similar change to my system. I have a question on the donut dimension. I think you said the large donut had a diameter of 15.5”, but that would be less than the filter diameter. Would you please confirm what you used for the outside diameter for the large donut. Thanks!
Looks good, Ed. I'm sure it will serve you well. I have a 5 micron filter bag on the top of mine and a plastic bag on the bottom. Those will have to do for now. Stumpy Nubs did a video on this very thing not too long ago. Check out his video. Take care. Bill
I think you will see a huge performance increase! I just received my dust hood that I can use with this. I've been using a shop vac and it's done ok, but I think this will get more of the dust out of the air while sanding on the lathe. Take care! - Ed
Are you still using the shop fox dust collector (I assume you have the model 1727)? How do you like it? Any pros/cons that you have found? Great video on the upgrade.
Looks like a good upgrade. Are you planning on making an update video after you have used it for a while? I know I'd like to see how it works after a good work out. As always, 👍.
Thank you Bentley! I do like it, but I had been saving up and finally was able to get the Easy Wood Tools Easy Chuck. I still have my two Nova chucks and still us them. - Ed
I was pricing this filter kit just earlier today and then this video came up on my feed. Nice! $273 shipped for me. Expensive upgrade but my collector is immediately left of my lathe and the stock Harbor Freight filter is pretty bad. I'll be doing this soon. "Wynn" if anyone is considering the same.
It will work well but at $250 for the canister, I will need two, I don't know if it will be cost effective. Still, thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.
Thank you Glen! I know what you mean. It's not a cheap upgrade, but they say that you won't have to replace it. That's all good when it's just one, but a different story if you have to buy two. - Ed

I did the same thing. It works much better for me with this setup. - Ed
Great video. I was just starting to upgrade mine with the same small 14" opening and figuring out how I should do it. This is exactly what I needed!
Thank you Ken! I'm glad the video helped. - Ed

great video! thanks for posting. Going forward with adding a filter to my DC after watching.
Thank you! It make a big impact IMO. - Ed
Thank you for sharing the information, I am looking at different options for my shop. Thank you for sharing your video.
Thank you Mark. Take care brother! - Ed
Certainly better than the original bag, Ed! Now you just need to add a cyclone.

Nice upgrade 👌! Might be awhile but I would like to get this. Thanks for sharing! Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!

Thank you Bill! I did see the video that he made. In fact, they have a link to it on the manufactures website. Have a blessed day! - Ed
I have the Harbor Freight dust collector and I bought a filter like that...I haven't had a chance to install it yet.

Yes. While this upgrade improved the performance, it still doesn't have as much suction as I'd like. The only fix for that is a bigger motor. - Ed
How much did the filter improve performace?
I just ordered my Bucktool DC50 dust collector and I want to make this mod. I just can't find the diameter of the top of the canister online.
Looks like a good upgrade. Are you planning on making an update video after you have used it for a while? I know I'd like to see how it works after a good work out. As always, 👍.
Thank you Dave! I hadn't thought about it, but that is a great idea. - Ed
Thanks man ... gonna do this! Have same 1221 too ... do you like you NOVA CHUCK ?
Thank you Bentley! I do like it, but I had been saving up and finally was able to get the Easy Wood Tools Easy Chuck. I still have my two Nova chucks and still us them. - Ed

Stinks that all the good hobbies are so expensive! - Ed
