Awesome! I just purchased my first pro consumer camera, the Sony A6000! Since my internet is really bad bc I live in the country I don't need a 4K camera right now! You know I already have the DJI Mavic Pro! Is the Katana really worth the money? Thanks again for all your help and knowledge! Happy Histograming lol
Ed I seriously don't know why you don't have a podcast and make a living doing that. I learn more from you than an unmentioned drone podcast that I'm paying 47$ a mo for. Thank you for all your info.
I appreciate your end comments more than anything. I knew what the histogram did for the most part but understanding the practicality of it (relying on data rather than what looks "good" to our eyes) really put it into perspective. Thanks!
Thanks a lot Ed! For people without photography knowledge this helps a lot! I really love the way you explain things. And it is fun to watch some crazy videos now and then.. like the rescue mission for the lightning cable of the mavic. Its wonderful you always be yourself and don't want to compare with other youtubers. I think thats the main reason your channel is growing faster. Sorry for the spelling mistakes but I'm from Belgium so English isn't my mother language.
This with the earlier "Aperture, ISO & Shutter Speed" video, explained so much for someone like me who has no photography knowledge! Thanks a ton, Ed! Now, off to get those shots on my Mavic & Spark!
Thanks Ed, I fly a Phantom4 and a Typhoon H down here in New Zealand and that was one of the most useful and informative video's I've seen. I have used the histogram before, but never fully understood how to interpret it. Great video!! Regards Carey..
Thank you I had no clue what this was or how to use... very well put together video Now to figure out the filter pack I bought a year ago lol.... Once I learn this drone I will start buying more!!!!!! Thanks again
Lot's of confusing videos on the functionality of the histogram but your video was very informative and I feel like I have a good idea of what I'm looking at now.
The histogram is helpfull indeed. But you can also enable the overexposure warning. Then you can do quick adjustments to just below the warning. Mostly you have a good setting then.
thanks a lot! i have the mavic pro, this error occurs all the time thanks for the help but its too much effort to do this all the time so i might purchase some filters but great vid
It's not wrong to adjust shutter speed for proper exposure using a camera with a fixed aperture, so it can be done...but it's a heavy-handed workaround that isn't the intended function of shutter speed control. It has some unintended side effects such as a lack of motion blur at higher shutter speeds. It's better to use an ND filter to do the heavy lifting for finding proper exposure, and then only fine tune that exposure with shutter speed in smaller increments. For instance, an ND4 may be too light for a given shot, and an ND8 may be too dark, so I would probably use an ND4 and then very slightly raise my shutter speed to darken the image just a bit more.
Is there a histogram for focus? I seem to always be fighting to stay in focus. It would be nice if they would just code the software to auto focus in the middle constantly!
I'm looking for a drone to shoot homes and properties because I'm a realtor. Do you think the spark is a good camera drone for this? Or would I need to get a more expensive one? Thanks
Hello Ed, maybe you can help me with something. I have the mavic pro by the way. I filmed my dauthers soccer game on 30 fr/sec in 2.7k ntsc. the RAW movie is perfect, but when I want to produce the movie in magix pro it automaticly selects a 29.97 fr/sec. Also no problem but after rendering the grass is blurry/unsharp and flickering a little. do you have any tips how to get rid of this. ps forgive my bad english. regards John.
Hey, I use the iPad Mini 4, see here: amzn.to/2uj6KNV I use the Cellular version which is only $14 more than the Wifi version. Even though I used it without a cellular plan until just recently, it was nice to be able to buy the Cellular model to future proof myself in case I ever wanted to apply a cellular plan to the iPad (which I did recently and love it!). Regardless, you can use either model just fine with the drone, you just need to hotspot to it with your phone for any sort of internet connection with the DJI Go App. One thing I've found with the Spark is that it really requires a cellular model device since it connects to the device via Wifi and will override any sort of mobile hotspot wifi internet connection.
I should also say that I bought the 16GB model. The 128GB model price discrepancy between the cellular and non-cellular model is quite a big difference.
Not mentioned in the video, but for those who aren't aware - you should aim to keen your shutter speed twice that of your FPS, and adjust your ISO to change exposure instead of the shutter speed.
Big over-light problems here with my MPP, I live on the coast and Have a dark forest bordering a white beach and a highly reflective ocean next to that. Even with filters it is better to wait for a slightly overcast day because if the south pacific sun is shining you aint gonna get any balance between those three surfaces.
Would it be ideal to have a lumetri scope instead of a histogram on screen? Or is that not possible? I know that it's not possible on the DJI app I'm just saying in general, would having a lumetri scope on screen help and if so, why isn't it possible?
Hi Andy, perhaps that would be a good idea. I use waveforms on my other cameras sometimes, but the DJI GO is limited to the Histogram. You also have some overexposure guidelines as well similar to zebra stripes, but they seem to be pretty inaccurate and buggy for me. As for why waveforms and other lumetri scopes aren't available, I guess it comes down to the value of the app and the drone...who really knows!
wait but won;t changing the shutter speed mess up the fps/shutter speed ratio? I thought if youre shooting at 30fps for example, you're shutter should always be 60.
ceeloc yes, but there’s no way around that if you don’t have some sort of darkening filter for the Spark. Raising the shutter speed is a necessary evil in that case.

Focusing just on the histogram: two thumbs up. One of your best videos on a single tech issue! Thanks.
Ed I seriously don't know why you don't have a podcast and make a living doing that. I learn more from you than an unmentioned drone podcast that I'm paying 47$ a mo for. Thank you for all your info.
Cheers Ed you just made Histagram a whole lot easier to understand.
Ed, the best simple explanation I have seen yet on the Histogram. THANK YOU! I now understand it a lot better.
I have to second that emotion!
I have to totally agree with you James - Ed done a great job explaining the histogram in relation to the DJI drone!
I appreciate your end comments more than anything. I knew what the histogram did for the most part but understanding the practicality of it (relying on data rather than what looks "good" to our eyes) really put it into perspective. Thanks!

Great video!!

Good info. As a photographer, I have been around a histogram for years, but a lot of people just have no clue what it is for! Good explanation!
Thanks, it was not drawn out and long. You got to the point and kept me interested.
Thank you I had no clue what this was or how to use... very well put together video
Now to figure out the filter pack I bought a year ago lol....
Once I learn this drone I will start buying more!!!!!!
Thanks again
Excellent video. Thank you. Taking my Mavic out for second flight today in Kona.....Your videos have helped my so much getting to know my Mavic
Great explanation. I'm getting my mavic this weekend and feel more prepared after watching your videos!
I always love your videos, I have a DJI Mavic Pro myself and as a pilot I love these informational videos! Keep it up!!
Clear and pragmatic. Great video as usual.
Thanks for the explanation, I'm not there yet but took my first beginner to fly with my Dji Mavic, as a former parrot pilot, it's very new to learn
Thanks for your help
nice work Mr. Ricker!!
Lot's of confusing videos on the functionality of the histogram but your video was very informative and I feel like I have a good idea of what I'm looking at now.
Cheers man. Amazing explanation.
Thanks ED, great video, very clear description!

Hey Ed, could you make a video explaining the best settings for night time/darker flights? I think many of us would benefit from such a video. Thanks!
He Ed
Thanks for your Videos. Learned a lot from you. Greetings from Switzerland
This was an amazing video
Thanks for the informative....easy to understand explanation. 👍👍
Nicely done. Thanks for the explanation. I always had it wrong until now.
Thanks for this video. Very well explained. Great work.
Thank you!!
Great content as usual thanks Ed :D
Very informative! Thank you!
Thanks! This is what I'm looking for!
Great video 👍🏻
i learned alot from this!!! thanx!!
good morning Ed thanks for the cideo
video
Great info!!
thanks a lot! i have the mavic pro, this error occurs all the time thanks for the help but its too much effort to do this all the time so i might purchase some filters but great vid
Very informative! Is it wrong to be adjusting the shutter speed to get the ideal exposure, or should you use ND filters?

And in the customs settings? Could you explain that?
In the part with the shadows and car vender. Why not a hdr picture?
I am a noob and this helped me alot :)

Great information!!!! Thank You!!!Dr Eric Cohen MD
What is the Difference of Changing Shutter Speed vs E.V ??
great video, thanks Ed! 👍 New sub here.
this works for fotos, but not for videos for me. If you have manually shutter speed and turn the camera, you over or under exposure easily.
Do you use the histogram even with nd filters on? Thanks
I would imagine so, the histogram is there to help balance your image before hitting the shutter button.
At 02:09 I tried shooing the bug on my screen.... which was your phone lol
Why is my Dji spark camera footage not stable when am driving it in sides left and right
hey ed , what type of ipad do you use. im gonna splash out on an ipad mini 4 for my mavic pro. or will i go bigger. phone screen too small!.
Hey, I use the iPad Mini 4, see here: amzn.to/2uj6KNV

also... If you're already at 100 ISO and your f-stop is locked then ND filters would be the next option. But that's a whole other video :)

ok cool thanks!
bruh this whole time ive just been taking several pictures with different exposures and then deleting the bad ones lmao
I do that too sometimes! Nothing wrong with that.
