  • It’s a classic driven duck and pheasant shoot for Roy Lupton, except it’s in Sweden and all the shooters are using Aimpoint red dot sights. He masters his Aimpoint S1 and puts it through its paces on snow-covered ground among some of the stateliest scenery southern Sweden has to offer. The guns are also shooting steel shot, so it’s a good opportunity to see how steel works on a driven day.

    Why shoot game birds?
Game is wild, natural and free range, and it is one of the healthiest meats available today. It is low in cholesterol and high in protein. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Both pheasant and partridge contain high levels of iron, protein, vitamin B(6) and selenium, which helps to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
In addition to the nutritional benefits of game, game shooting is worth £2 billion annually to the UK rural economy and supports 74,000 jobs. There are 480,000 (UK government figures) active game shooters in the UK who enjoy bird shooting under the principles of the Code of Good Shooting Practice.
More than 2 million hectares are actively managed for shooting in the UK creating proven (PACEC, 2014) conservation benefits and preserving important habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna, in particular farmland birds. UK shooting providers spend £5.4 million on cover crop seeds every year and maintain over 25,000ha of wild-bird cover.
We’re proud to promote enjoyment of fieldsports and the countryside. There are three guiding principles to everything we do on Fieldsports Channel:
    ▶ Shoot responsibly
    ▶ Respect the quarry
▶ Ensure a humane, clean and quick kill

I was over 20 years a sport shooter, and do now have a hard time getting me into this subject.
My problem is, that I´m always aiming no matter what, which leads to a very poor performance, very poor.
Seeing this video I wonder, if a red dot would fix my problem.

Unsporting I reckon, what's next laser guided. Red dot for low light on deer or running big game like boar is ok to reduce bad bullet placement but on fly birds with shotguns. Don't think so, maybe I'm just old school.

Having tried red dots on shotguns, I'll never go back to the old bead again! I hit about 20% more clays and birds with the red dot than I used to without. It just works.

I think it’s complicated. Why is it okay to reduce wounding shots on some animals (deer) and not others?
I think I get what you mean: what’s coming next, and where is the line.
Personally I find red dots on shotguns are not crossing that line, or els we should stop using scopes on rifles as well.
Next generation might pull the trigger when the lead is right, and that is way beyond what I consider ethical.
      Kind regards Niklas

It’s not even close to unsporting. What’s next ban shotguns for hunting because it’s unsporting?

Making the shot should not be the skill block, it should be finding the game and getting within effective range. Every ability you have to make a better more ethical shit when one is presented should be used.
