I'm in one of those countries that cannot legally obtain a PSN account and I'm not very happy about this requirement to link a PSN account. Yes, I could lie about my country of origin but that's a violation of Sony's ToS and run the risk being banned and losing access to game anyways. So I'm not sure what my options are since it's been weeks since I bought the game and I've sank dozens of hours into it already so I doubt a refund is in the cards unless Sony offers them as a result of the backlash.

It should also be noted that Sony changed the wording on the Playstation PC Games website FAQ, the same time this announcement was made. Early this morning, and throughout the entire time the game has been available, it stated that a PSN account was optional to play all Playstation PC games. As soon as the announcement was made today, they changed their statement to say that some games would require a PSN account.

The problem with review bombing Helldivers is that it doesn't punish Sony directly enough. It punishes Arrowhead, and Arrowhead didn't make this call, Sony did. Down the line, Sony will look at the negative reviews around Helldivers because of their own actions, and then further punish Arrowhead for not living up to expectations, people will be laid off, and the games industry will get that much shittier. This is the cycle. They will pass the buck on this at every single turn.

I'm thinking that Sony is going to hold to their decision and force Arrowhead to force PC players to set up PSN accounts. A lot of people are completely missing the point. It DOES NOT matter that it says "3rd Party Account Required" on the Steam page. Many games have this but do not actually require a 3rd party account (for example, Rocksmith 2014 off the top of my head). The only way to actually know how intrusive 3rd party integration is is to actually try playing the game and then request a refund if the integration is too burdensome (e.g. can't play the game without creating an account). When players bought the game, looked around, didn't see the PSN requirement and figured that it was for some enhanced cross play friend list stuff that wouldn't impact a PC player without console friends. Why would anyone dig further to see if there were plans to change this? That is an entirely unreasonable burden to place on the consumer when they have a 2-hour window to refund specifically to discover issues like this.

Besides, most people are well aware of this and most of the heat is directed at Sony, not Arrowhead. It's both Spitz and the other community managers' comments that make Arrowhead look bad.
Add to this that telling concerned fans to either place a negative review or uninstall, only adds more fuel to the fire, making the situation only worse.

I live in the US, and I have a PSN account from long ago that I still have access to. And I won’t be linking it for a number of reasons
    1) I don’t care how much or how little data Sony actually gets from Steam on me. They haven’t needed it thus far for the game to operate, and I get nothing for in return, so they can’t have it.
2)I also feel they have been very deceptive. I saw that the game required a PSN account, but was assured by friends and saw upon lunch that that link was not in fact required. After that initial ask, the game never told me I would need to link a PSN account again. This is not the first time that game has said an account link is required, but it actually wasn’t, so the lack of further requests led me to believe that it would never be required. Their reasons are BS. The game has been running without it for this entire time, and community ban and protection tools already exist within Steam. Which leads me to conclude they want player data
    3) Some players will totally lose access to a game that they have paid for and been playing for months. Some of the friends that I play with are in this situation. So if they go, so do I.
I’m going to continue playing without linking a PSN account until the game is taken from me, or Sony reverses their decision. If the outcry so far doesn’t convince them to reverse it, I am hoping that the player drop off next month will.

The little notification on the store page underneath controller support, which is well below the buy button, isn't justifiable. If Sony wanted this, they should've made AHG put a pop-up notice that the game would eventually require PSN accounts once the system was sorted every time you logged in. As it is, you have players that never even saw that small tag on the store playing for MONTHS before getting hit with this.

Edit: To anyone fed up with this I suggest checking out the “Stop Killing Games” movement that’s going on. Accursed Farms has a campaign going on to get more and more countries to cement the idea of games being products and should be treated as such. This reminds me of how Rocket League dropped active support and updates for Linux and Apple players right after Psyonix sold out to Epic Games. Their solution was to give Apple and Linux players a free copy of the Windows version of the game but not a refund. Rocket League also had a meteoric rise in popularity thanks to social media. And now look at it.
I really hope that Helldivers 2 doesn’t end up following in Rocket Leagues footsteps. Originally, Rocket League was an amazing full-price game with paid DLC packs for cars made by a small independent studio. Then they dropped traditional DLC for Loot Boxes to capitalize on that popularity before those were outlawed in the EU for encouraging minors to gamble. As soon as Epic Games got their grubby mitts on the game, they introduced Season Passes and nuked the in-game trading mechanics by locking Premium content to gamer’s accounts. Now it’s another Fortnite-Clone Free2Play Live-Service Season-Pass cash grab full of toxic tryhards.

I think you hit the nail on the head the reason this is completely unacceptable is because it's being enforced retroactively after the game has been out for 3 months. If people booted the game up for the first time and simply could not even get to a main menu or onto their ship without linking a PSN account then that sucks but at least at that point people have the information they need to make what ever decision they are going to make. If they don't want or can't create a PSN account then they can simply uninstall and request a refund and yeah that suck and it will be annoying it isn't an abuse of trust or selling the game under a false pretense. Trying to enforce this after most players have dozens to hundreds of hours and are well past the limit of Steam's refund policy makes it impossible for those players to give informed consent. The fact that their community manager is going in an stoking the fire is really the nail in coffin for me. This PSN bs pissed me off but I'd have been willing to give a second chance if this demonstration managed to convince Sony to change course. Spitz being disrespectful, dismissive, and hostile towards players who are rightfully upset over this is why it won't matter if Sony does change course. Because of Spitz this lands just as much on Arrowhead as it does on Sony and I am done with both of them.

its not a big deal for me, but I think its still scummy behavior. Sure there might have been something the very first time u played the game that mentioned a PSN account and let you skip, but there was nothing about it after that, not even a hint that this would not be something you could skip in the future. So they let everyone think it was optional until they sold enough and now they suddenly announce that it wasn't optional after all.

If Sony persists on this, then I am unfortunately done with HD2, which is a damn shame because I liked it a lot.
Fact of the matter is, regardless of intent on Sony's part, I despise having to make new accounts on websites I never use just to play a single game. I hate it on GTA. I hate it on Battlefield. And I hate it on HD2. I dont own a Playstation newer than the Playstation 2. I dont want or need a Sony account. And I sure as fuck dont want or need to make one when the game has been out 3 months and this came completely out of left field. No warning, just suddenly "make an account and give us control or fuck off".
And then there's Sony's fucking abysmal track record of getting hacked and people's private information being leaked... The first part of my comment was reason enough. Sony's track record is the final nail in the coffin.

After June 4f (if I'm not misstaken) active player count on PC will face a major drop. How major? Don't know. But Helldivers 2 was selling in 190 countries. Only 69 of those can create PSN acc. I'd assume we can talk about up to 30% drop in active players numbers preaty easily.

I think the biggest problem is that Twinbeard is the only person actually being straight with us about what's happening. The Warbound a month is a Sony descion not a Arrowhead thing is a first for me and probaly be a 1st for alot of players. As Spitz, devs, and the other Community Manager talk about things like everything is thier decisions, not Sony. Also Spitz has been allowed to shit on the community and give false info way to much without any oversight. If Helldivers fall I don't feel like it be the last patch or the PSN account is the big thing, but Spitz and devs/CM talking down to the community.
Just as reference as a percentage the recent patch/them constantly preaking the game is is like 5-10%, Linking to a PSN Account 35-45%, Spitz and other dev/CM treating the community like shit/looking down on the community 45-60%. It's just the treating the community like shit is a more drawn out process than the immediate reaction that a patch or linking PSN account will.

The thing is that we as a community won't really be able to do anything against it, the community will be mad for like a week or two and continue play the game, majority of the players won't stop playing because of it, and reviews are not that significant when the money is already in the bag, just like what happened with all the anti cheat saga, it doesn't stop people from playing the game, and the players can't do anything else that is as significant as them deciding to not play.
