      Oh yes the field sounds fantastic (so does the old OP-1). But having stereo tracks, a stereo reverb and ability to add tape noise/hiss and grit with the new records is just unbeatable.Thanks for the feedback!

    My WISHLIST for OP-1 Field UPDATES (please fill in your own withlist too):
    * Zero crossfade point when lift/drop (at least as an option.
    * Pan sounds (synths) before recording onto a tape track -
    Currently we can only "effectively" pan drum sounds. But would be great to be able to pan sounds on the tape-view (where you set the recording level = red meter). So you record a sound in a specific panned position. Pressing the orange knob could turn the orange knob into a pan-knob instead. Super easy to add and a great way to make use of the new push knob functionality. Yes, you can already pan sounds in the mix view, but that's panning the whole tracks, which is not the same. You might want to have one sound on the left and one sound on the right on ONE single track (T1 or whatever). ;)
    * Stereo delay - also make more different delay types like you get on the Novation Summit. Lo-fi delays, BBD, ping pong etc.
    * Lift more than 22 sec. Please give us the ability to lift more audio data, it's super helpful when creating larger arrangements and editing.
    * Audio over bluetooth - Ability to send audio to wireless bluetooth headphones. I don't know if it's possible with the onboard low energy-circuit. You can send audio over usb-c cable directly to the iPhone though...which is super neat for mixing down tracks onto your phone. ;)
    * undo / redo functionality (probably the hardest to implement of the above)

      I feel the same, thanks. I made this video because I feel its important to hear them side to side and get some insight on what you get. I still feel both OP-1 and OP-1 field is a great investment. Original OP-1 has a unique lofi sound to it, and the new one is overall superior in its ”broadness” of sound capabilities. TE just added a Vocoder to it, which is a great addition. I didn’t have a vocoder except via software so thats a win! 👌☀️😄

  • @MFPRODUCTIONSCHANNEL

    Excellent demo! I wonder why TE didn’t bother to make a video like this. I also wonder why we’re still stuck with a mono delay on a $2000 device in 2022. Who is using mono delays and WHY? They’ve had 10 years to add a stereo delay and we still don’t have it? Thank you for mentioning the key getting stuck, it shows that the price is high because it’s artificially inflated, not because the workmanship is premium.

      Hi thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I try to answer questions from the community...and questions that I ask myself before buying stuff, to know what the gear is like...
      I bet TE have plenty of updates in stock for the OP1-field so hopefully we can see some cool additional stuff coming to it soon. Including several new delay types...which is my nr.1 wish. ;) The cpu seems very snappy and capable of plenty more. Thankfully I haven't experienced any more "stuck key" situations, it happened once.
      I guess they cut all these buttons and knobs with precision... so they shouldn't be wiggly, or let in fluid easily... instead they are too tight so they get stuck. At least that's what it looks like on the Octatrack mk2...it has two buttons that gets stuck from time to time. Very annoying for a brand new device that costs....a...l...o...t.

    Thanks for making this video! I notice in the gain comparisons section that the OP-1 (OG) level indicator is displaying just one dot.
    This happens when the tape input knob is not turned up. The volume knob on the unit can be cranked to 11 but if the tape input is down, you won't get full volume out of the synth.
    Regardless, I'm still stoked to get the Field after this kidney deal goes through.

      Hey Vincent, thanks for writing. Notice both tape levels at 01:48. The tape inputs (red level meter on the top right side) are set to the exact same level for the track. I also had the track (T4) mixer set to the same level on both units. Drive was also set to the same value 12. ;) So all possible levels were set exactly the same on the OP-1 and the OP-1 field. The field is tremendously louder. Good luck on the kidney deal. ;) Seriously, I wish it was way cheaper so more people could experience this wonderful playground of sounds. ;(

    Nice demo. All of the new Field features are incredibly desirable to have in a portable, self contained production device. It comes down to cash, but this is on my wish list. Just being able to drop in high resolution stereo stems changes its scope.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 года назад +2

      haha yeah Chris, it's a totally different ballpark. But I wanted to show what you have "as reverb" on the old unit, and what the new one brings. ;) Oh yeah, the stereo tracks is a killer and very welcome. I just wish we get the ability to pan synth sounds before recording them, so one can pan a synth to the right on T1, and then record an overdub with a synth to the right on the same track - T1. It should be possible with the same red knob in the tape view. SO we can just press the knob and it swaps to control panning rather than volume. That would be helpful!

      @@MattiasHolmgren , I guess a temporary workaround would involve setting up your left right balance going on, presumably a vocal or instrument track you wanted mono could just exist dead centre (dual mono???). Sound on sound would still allow stereo layering on top of that particular “monoized” track, I guess. I always wished that the OP-1 original version could apply some stereo imaging on individual tracks other than panning them hard. A fifth track would really help to expand the soundstage more naturally, but…never going to be a possibility🤣 I end up using the stereo delay on the output, which I usually like but it can be very hard to manage.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 года назад +1

      @@christopherecatalano using the mixer to pan tracks is what I've been doing on OG-1 (original OP-1). I have like T1, T2 dead center, than pan T3 25% left and T4 25% right...and such. That's like the way on the OG-1. But now on OP-1 field which has the stereo tracks, it would be superb to set how the recorder should input the sound (in the stereo field....panning) onto the track. Which would let you set exactly where in stereo space you want to record a synth sound.
      Oh, while I'm at it, it would be super wonderful to be able to set the stereo width also for the incoming sound. ;) hehehe true stereo panning. ;)
      That way we can make full use of the stereo field and get better placement on sounds when overdubbing onto the same stem / track.

    great demo! can the field be used for microtonality? that is, can you set up the pitches so that e.g. D is +12 cents from equal temperament, d# is - 23 cents, etc for each of the 12 pitches and then they are playable from the keyboard?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 года назад +3

      Hi Dante, you can adjust the master pitch up/down in cents or notes (semitones). Thats only mastet tuning though. But you can use a drum sampler and have whatever pitch setting you want on each key (slice of the full wavefile) = whatever scale you want. 😉🥁💎

    Although I must admit having something so small to make music on is very tempting ,but then we come to price I believe 2000 dollars for the op1 field ,if I had that cash I would be looking at getting a top workstation synth ,with all the edit functions quantise , copy paste ,undo recording etc ,or I would go for a top synthesiser .It seems very overpriced .

    • @MattiasHolmgren

      Hi, the Op-1s have different sound playback engines. There is a sampler and there are multiple synth engines. The devices can stores more synth patches since they contain less data.
      Sample patches on the other hand contain audio files which can be long and heavy in memory.

      The knobx of the Op-1 field is some millimeter taller when laying flat. the enclosure of the field is thinner, but the buttons proptrude a bit more to make up for it. The one specific thing I can compare the new reverb to is NI Reaktor 5's "Space Master 2.0 on "Church Rear" setting. I really like that utility and I use it almost exclusively as FX sends for my digital and analog hardware synths and as a VST plugin for my DAWs alike. (I run it of a small laptop with an external DAC). I always missed the fact that so few hardware FX processors are capable of the same lusheous, voluminous reverb, devoid of the higher frequency hissing which ruins the sound of so many reverb pedals (Behringer Dual Digital Reverb pedal is a great example of that high frequency ruining the experience, BOSS's version is a bit better but not by much). Turning off the high frequency part of the spectrum makes the sound extremely muffled. So it's definitely a nice addition to the new OP-1.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 года назад +2

      Oh never tried the Reaktor specific reverb except for Kontakt reverbs. I really like the Valhalla suite of reverbs. Valhalla Supermassive also just got two new modes to check out!!! Also enjoy the Chroma Verb in Logic and the reverb on the Hologram Microcosm. Indeed these massive muffled bloom reverbs are incredible useful, especially for ambient and also for making a mix big with big difference (in space) between instruments. Mother is a great addition. Hope for more new effects / variations (like ping pong and lofi delay modes) to make use of the stereo.

      Yeah, I sold my liver to buy the OP-1field. Nah seriously, I had the OP-1 for quite some time and consider it one of my most fun instruments to play/record, so it was a no-brainer to save up and grab the new one. So if it's an inspiring piece of gear which helps you bring your musical ideas to life (without effort) I say go for it. ;) Lol, yeah hoping for my channel to explode one day too. 😄

Why'd they have to fuck with it like that? @FullClippz fair dues to you and i'm in no way telling anyone how to spend their money it just wojldn't be me. You did say one thing and its not the first time i've heard it, and that is, you use it as a sketch pad. Thats one hell of an outlay for a scetch pad. For that kind of money you should be able to turn out 'oven ready' tunes. For two grand you could buy some serious studio fire power. Just my opinion means kothing to anyone else and good luckk to you if you go ahead and buy it, i hope you have many hours of fun with it and in the end thats what it's all about.

    I already have the OG device and tbh, I'd much rather buy 2k worth of plugins that can do x1000000 the job this machine can do. The improvements aren't worth the price-tag, imo. After 10 years they should've done much much better. I can't believe it still has 4 tracks...that's a shame and an embarrassment. I would pay 2k for an OP-2 with 16 tracks and more features, but not for this one. It even looks like the first one, but ironically uglier...what a shame. Back in the day I bought mine for $800, and I still love the OP-1. I thought it was a bit pricy but worth the novelty. For 2k this device isn't novel or worth it imo. They should've kept the pocket operator mindset(accessible+innovative)...so disappointing.
    ps: Love your videos, thanks Mattias!

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 года назад +1

      The design is growing one me. But OG color scheme stands out! I can totally agree it would have been a good choice to make it at least 8 track. After working on it for a few days now I totally see the benefit of having the new recorder tape machine choices. Since a ton of people on YT always record the Op-1 via a tape to get hiss, grit and wobble.
      I did a few tracks with the different machines and it does add a nice lofi vibe to the crystal clear 32bit engine. Very cool addition. Same with the mother reverb, a very welcome addition since everyone is hooking the OG to a strymon. 🤣
      I wrote a lengthy post on reddit regarding my observation on the price of the Op-1 field and as a product developer myself its clear how they were thinking. Its a pity the old one was sooo hyped to the sky and price skyrocket, because that basically sets the mark for any sequal release. Since they already seen market will pay for it.
      Now I am hoping for a ton of sweet updates on the delay, effects and maybe ability to lift more than 22sec of data. We should be able to life all 4 tracks for 2min IMo. But we’ll see.🤘
      I just installed the 1.1.4 update from 2022-06-01, which makes it possible to have screen brightness at 125% and gives 30% lower keyboard latency, new mini disc seek etc. which is nice!

    The Original OP-1 is now available for about € 780 on the used market here in Austria. What do you think? That's a good deal right? Or is the Original OP-1 just too old for 2024.

      Hey Juergen, OP-1 has a very charactaristic sound, so if you like it you should def. go for it.
      It's a super fun device. And for arranging with the OP-1 you will probably end up recording it into your DAW (Ableton Live in this case) because
      arranging on the OPs is a bit of a pain....no undo.
      But building small song foundations, beats and sound design is lovely on the OP-1...but the field and the OG-1.
      That's how I look at it.

    It’s funny how much WHINING there is about price. $2000 is not a lot to pay for the quality and features. Add inflation to the original one and then all the new features and it’s totally justified. I guess a lot of recording engineers don’t make any money? You would think that 1 gig will be more than enough to pay for this.
    The OP-1 is the Macintosh of the industry. You can buy a laptop for $500 but it’s sh~t compared to a Mac. You get what you pay for. Work harder.
