    I review and compare my 2006 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor to the 2011 Chevy Caprice PPV to see which is the better car. I review their specs and provide a behind-the-wheel driving experience of both cars. Both clearly have their pros and cons and both are amazing cars but one has to be better than the other. Join me to find out which it is!

    Crown Vic all day every day, I just got myself a 2001 P71 with 126k miles on it and it runs great and everything, only have had to do a few minor cosmetic things like change out the headlight bulbs and get a new wiper arm to replace the driver side arm that was messed up.... oh and changed the oil, spark plugs and air filter but yeah so far aside from those fuew things has been a dream

    I love my 2011 Crown Vic with 83,000 miles on it. The Caprice is very tempting but the extra cost to buy & maintain it puts the Crown Vic in First Place by a mile!!

  • @ricksavage9457

    I'm on my 2nd Crown Vic first was a 2000 bought it with 53,000 miles in 2012 kept it 5 years put another 50,000 miles on it with nothing more than a brake job, tires, plugs and oil changes. My 2nd is a 2002 Lx fully loaded bought it with 63,000 miles on it last year (mint condition) and have done nothing but get tires and oil changes so far. Despite the plastic intake manifold that will eventually start leaking and need to be replaced I have never owned a more reliable car this includes the 4 Toyota's I have previously owned.
    There is plenty of room under the hood for tinkering and repairs, comfort and ride in the civilian models is as smooth as it gets. I upgraded to a modern stereo system with blue tooth etc and it sounds great with the original speaker system that came with the car. I have considered the Police interceptor for the slightly higher horsepower but decided against it for the sake of comfort and options. I added a K&N intake system and upgraded the exhaust which seemed to boost my power a little and my gas mileage if I stay off it on long cruises. By far the best overall car I have owned in 36 years of driving. Sure, it looks like an old mans car but old men usually don't tear down the Highway at 90-100 mph cranking Heavy Metal tunes.

      I plan on putting a Mustang GT throttle body on mine after the New Years which will make the car a lot more fun. I also get weird reactions from other drivers especially when coming up behind them on the highway they see the CV grill and head lights they usually slow down to the speed limit as I change lanes and blow past them.

    I have a caprice and I like it. The expensive stuff is body parts, but if you can wait and hunt diligently, not too bad considering how few were brought over. The engines are not exotic and parts are just regular everyday parts. I like the crown vics too from a utility aspect and there is no difficulty finding body panels, bumpers and the like. I've never driven a vic, but I know I would like it!

      Police cars in the late 70s through the early 90s had full roll cages and could protect those people inside the vehicle from major injuries but when they wanted better MPG requirements the roll cages had to go because a roll cage adds about 500 pounds to the vehicle back in those days.

    • @jonathanrabbitt
      @jonathanrabbitt 5 лет назад

      The large A-pillar cross-sections are probably not as much for roll-over; more for offset frontal crash performance. Same with the raked windshield; which reduces the bending stresses at the top of the A pillar. Both are about improving cabin strength by reducing the risk of the A-pillar buckling under the offset frontal impact. I think that during this era, they were chasing better impact performance for the 64km/h offset crash test that was introduced for the published ANCAP safety ratings; even though only the 56km/h test was legally mandated.
      This "feature" was always merited a complaint from reviewers in Australia for the Commodore/Statesman/Caprice architecture, right from their launch in mid 2006.

    Crown Victoria’s came with two different transmissions. 4R70W and 4R70E. The engines are also different. There’s two engine block designations. Some crown Vic police cars came with civilian interior upon request. Do your research. They also came with different rear end gears.

    It was interesting to see our Aussie Caprice in U.S. cop car form, the interior is the base model Omega not the standard top spec as here, also AFM was dropped here in Australia due to the reliability issues. GM Holden spent 1 Billion dollars AU in developing the VE making the all new Zeta platform it sits on and everything else unique to the vehicle,previously all Holdens from the Commodore era were based on Opel platforms making the VE the most Australian Holden of all. Sadly GM pulled the pin and Holden stopped local car manufacturing at the end of 2017. I have a VE Ute and wouldn't part with it, I know there are guy's in the States who are importing them and converting to left hand drive and people who have them love them and wonder why they were never put on the market. Great video too thanks for the comparison.

  • @trickydick2909
    @trickydick2909 5 лет назад

    I'm sure the Caprice is a much more modern car with better performance all around. I do still like my CVPI though. It's a 2000 with 205K miles, factory 3.55 tracloc rear end, PI head swap for 10.5:1 compression, stage 2.5 cams, longtube headers, 3600 rpm stall 9.5in torque converter, plus literally every other bolt on with a great dyno tune for 277 rwhp weighing under 4000 lbs. The whole nine. In hindsight, I should have just saved for a supercharger but I do love the car and plan on keeping it until the frame rusts out underneath me.
    The thing about the Vic's performance is that it not only feels a lot faster from the inside than it actually is, but it legitimately is surprisingly fast if you get it in the right part of the powerband. It seems to do very well for a 277rwhp car. For example, I know from experience that my car will stay neck and neck with a 99-04 Mustang GT equipped with the typical bolt ons well past 100mph. The outcome of that race is decided by which driver is dumb enough to keep pushing, not the performance of the car itself. In fact, with the 3.55 gears and the 3600 rpm stall my car will beat nearly any Foxbody or New Edge Mustang to 60. Where my car really shines is through 2nd gear from about 35 to 85mph. Between those speeds it is unbelievable what it will keep up with.
    So it's not the fastest car on the road by any means, but definitely a lot of fun and honestly fast enough for me. but it's not really the power that keeps me from getting a new car. I just love the way it rides and handles. I love how easy it is to drive with much better all around visibility than any newer car despite its size. I especially love the RWD. Anything front wheel drive is just foreign to me. All of the complaints people have about RWD being harder to control, particularly in rain and snow, just don't make a difference when you know exactly how your car will react in any given situation. I have so much time behind the wheel of these cars that oversteer is completely natural to me. With snow tires and some extra weight in the trunk it is just as capable if not better than any other car in the snow. I can't imagine driving anything else (except for the 04 Town Car I drive for work haha).

    The accidents you showed where mostly front end and side damage. If the mirrors where that big of an issue there would be more rear damage to these cars plus the fact that these accidents happen while they were in service vehicles.. And probably from cops not being able to control or balance that hp when under higher speed conditions, I've had me chevy 3 yrs now and not one issue with the cylinder deactivation system... It could be a issue for these cars because that feature is hardly ever used when on patrol... And this is just me the vic is just old school bottom line and the 4.6 engine had its own issues under the hood, I'll take the performance and style all day..But parts engine for the capri should be crossable with any 5.3 engine body panels would be a issue ..These two car are like apples and oranges.. I flipped many former highway patrol, and city cars. 90% of them being CVPI's. We would drive the Fords from Denver where we picked them up, to San Antonio. Never, never did we have a one of them leave us sitting along side the highway waiting for a wrecker. We found the common failing is the alternator and some rear end issues. I had one that the fuel pump (located in the fuel tank) went out. That was the biggest expense of all of them. Most of the Fords we bought had anywhere from 80000 to 125000 miles on them. Another thing that was not mentioned here is the idle hours. Ford advises the idle hour is equal to 33 miles. You can find some of these cars that will have in excess of 9000 idle hours. Again, never did seem to effect the performance though. If you are not familiar with how to obtain the hours, push the "trip meter" twice. The second push will give you the hours. That Chevy looked good, but for my money, I'll stay with the Ford Crown Victoria.

      A much newer, solid, modern, etc alternative to the technically dated Crown Vic
      Although the Vic was a solid product, it was the lack of modernization that killed it.
      The Caprice, well in Australia it was the complete opposite of pursuit vehicles 🤣
      Same chassis designed & engineered by Holden (Zeta)
      Also went on becoming the underpinnings of Chevrolet's 5th Gen Camaro
      Hence why replacement parts are expensive, because of the Australian production.

    If I were trying to catch someone, I'd use the Chevy/Holden...if I wanted to smash another vehicle off the road, I'd want the Vic. The Vic is also tried and true (meaning it's easy to fix and maintain).
    My experience with vans was similar...the Ford van I found the steering "imprecise", but I could drive over huge rocks and smash any other vehicle into pieces, as necessary. When I was later issued a Chevy van, I could outrun and outmaneuver everything. Although the Chevy was more comfortable, I didn't think it would have held together as well in the event of some unforeseen "road trauma"....

    The Crown Victoria was originally built to be a police vehicle only in late 50s but ford decided it would be a good idea to have a civilian version of the car as well. Crown Victoria’s is the best made ever made as far as strength and brute force seriously body built on frame cars built to last my grandma had two Crown Victoria’s her first one died in a flash flood the second one died in a t-bone accident a 1992 Chevy 1 ton SRW extended cab long bed hit her 1987 4 door Crown Victoria at 75 mph at a 4 way intersection her light was green his was red she just started to accelerate through the intersection when the truck was speeding and drunk when he hit her car on the driver side the she was driving was struck sending sideways about 35 yards and jumping a curb and nearly plowed into a business building she and her sister were in the car both her and her sister were both able to walk away from the accident only with minor injuries cuts and bruises the car was totaled of course the accident happened in the late 90s to early 2000s both Crowd Victoria’s was mid to late 80s models a unibody car of today might would not been so lucky if the same accident had happened. I know first hand because one of my closest friend had a similar accident just recently and he didn’t make it his car was 2012 Honda Civic same size truck hit him at 78 mph.

    You will not find another car besides the crown vic that is as cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, easy to find parts for, and has the space a vic does, with still decent speed. These newer unibody police cars are really expensive to maintain, they don't hold up in a crash like a crown vic and there's no room in them, besides the ford explorer or tahoe. The tahoes are complete duds. The explorers have great speed even without ecoboost. The only thing I can knock the crown vic for is how slow it is and how plain it is, but everything else is spot on. The ground clearance in a vic is another staple that you won't find in another car. The chargers won't even clear a small ice chunk on the road and they bottom out on uneven ground. Good luck even clearing a curb let alone going off road in a charger.

    None of these comparisons are valid anymore. With Chevy abandoning all police sedans in 2017, and Ford ending orders for the Taurus PI in September of 2018, the Charger Pursuit is now America's police car.
    For 2020, even the new Exploder PI will suffer in sales to the big Dodge. Why? The bid-out price for a bare bones '20 Exploder PI is near $36,000. The AWD V8 Charger Pursuit is near $24,000. That's a 3 for 2 ratio, and that kind of price difference means even those agencies with a preference for the Ford will not be able to justify the price. The Tahoe starts at $34,000, and the AWD V8 Durango Pursuit starts at $29,000.
    Dodge will also run Ford's nose into it with their new 2020 Ram Pursuit, which expected to beat the F-150 PI's laughable top speed by 18 mph.

    Apples and oranges. There are REASONS the Vic outsold the Chev for police service. How many police chases have we ALL seen repeatedly on RUclips videos in which the Crown Vic wins in the end? Countless. Driving skill makes up for a tremendous difference in horsepower and torque. So. Price, value, reliability, longevity and the ability to get the job done were what separated the Ford and Chevy. For police service there WAS no comparison. Was the Chev more fun to drive? Of course. But what has that to do with police work? Nothing. Zero. The simplicity of the big Ford and the countless numbers made were big reasons the Crown Vic was the sales winner by a HUGE margin for police service. Parts were easy to get and CHEAP, as most were civilian version. And even the parts specific to the P71 were readily available and cheap because of the sheer volume of P71s on the road. Ford OWNED that segment for many years, just as they have and continue to do with pickup trucks. Nuff said

  • @RobSmithSporty
    @RobSmithSporty 4 года назад

    Right off the bat, I'd rather have the Crown Vic. Half the reason for owning a used police vehicle is that they are virtually bulletproof, and the new Caprice PPV doesn't qualify there, which brings me to a question. Why are you comparing Apple's and oranges? You should compare your P71 to the old style Caprice and the new Caprice with a Ford Taurus Police Interceptor. Just my opinion.

    the Caprice does NOT have a civilian counterpart. the SS is not even close to the same car, nor is the G8.
    Its not that hard to source parts for the Caprice either. Its the LS2 bottom end with an LS3 top end. plenty of those hanging around. Truck parts fit too. They didn't reinvent the wheel (build a whole new motor) for this car.
    362hp* ...just saying.
    and DOD is removable with a little bit of knowhow.

I did go over everything on the car after we bought it. I replaced the breaks, belt and hoses, antifreeze, headlight module, Optima battery along with new Michelin tires. We are retired and travel, last year we drove the Mercury on a 6,500 mile trip out west and enjoyed every mile.

    When vehicles are concerned, I go by the KISS Principal (Keep It Simple Stupid). All vehicles are 'money pits' !
    Why add insult to injury by compounding the pain of exorbitant repair bills.This is why I drive an 07 Crown Vic.

    A better comparison would be the B Body Caprice and Crown Vic. The new Caprice is a completely different genre of car. I guess it doesnt matter too much because everyone knows that 4.6 is a boat anchor in comparison to the LT1. If Chevy had kept making the B Body as long as Ford did, the real icon would've been the Caprice. Don't forget, city streets were once full of Caprice cop cars and taxis rather than Crown Vics... They only switched once Chevy stopped making the Caprice. The B Body Caprice was the only one police agencies bothered to restore from scratch once they had reached the end of their service life because they liked them so much.
