I won´t ever understand why AP didn't include Lenny Zakatek, Stewart Elliot and Ian Bairnson in the live project since Live in Madrid (2004) and so on. Because this dispute is new. Instead, he preferred to create an entirely new line up with fine musicians but they were never involved in the original albums. And they never sounded like the original APP somehow.
I agree. What’s behind Parsons discarding all of these brilliant musicians ? They helped to create the sound . As far as I am concerned they were the best and that’s not just because they were the originals . While the current musicians are very good , the originals remain the gold standard . One day we will find out why Parsons rebuilt the band from scratch . If anyone knows, please educate me.
The Alan Parsons Project ended when Eric Woolfson, the creator of all that wonderful music, left due to irreconcilable differences with Parsons. You have to remember that Parsons is only the sound engineer. He is reaping the fruits of Woolfson's talent, for me undeservedly.
He's not "only" the sound engineer, though. In 1975 when the Project started, Alan enjoyed renown as a top notch producer, contrary to Eric, who DID write the songs, yes, but was pretty unknown still. That's why it became The Alan Parsons Project. His name was the star name, the draw. So I don't think it's undeserved. We all know that Woolfson/Parsons wasn't real, it was a business consideration. Just like Lennon/McCartney. As a rule of thumb, Eric wrote the songs and Alan the instrumentals. There were a few exceptions to that rule, Can't Take It With You for example.
The Alan Parsons Project was never a touring band till the early 2000's and even that is not called The Alan Parsons Project, it's called the Alan Parsons Live Project which was an agreement he made with his former partner (the late) Eric Woolfson. Alan does not even use the name on his more recent albums which are simply Alan Parsons solo albums. The players on some of the early Project albums were just people used in the studio (and there were a lot of them). Alan should absolutely be able to decide whether or not someone can use his name. Saying they are the "original" Alan Parsons Project band just isn't true. They are a group of people who played on Project albums. There was no band. The albums were Alan's and Eric's projects. I have seen The Alan Parsons Live Project with Alan twice in recent years and they are fantastic but I would be very angry if I paid to see something called The Original Alan Parsons Project without Alan.
Exactly. And while Laurence Cottle did play on TAPP albums, it was only the last "1½" after he took over from David Paton. Same thing with Richard Cottle. Associated? Definitely. Original? Not hardly. Lenny Zakatek sang on a lot of TAPP songs, so his credentials hold up - even if he was one of many. Only Powell and Elliot are 100% genuine. Why they do this is a different story.
@@bfdmudk Richard Cottle has been on Keats, Vulture Culture, Stereotomy, Gaudi, Freudiana and then on Try Anything Once, On Air, The Time Machine so you can't say "hardly an original " and Laurence Cottle can't be diminished by having play only on Gaudi and Freudiana. In the end it's about the musical bond these musicians have had since the times of working with Eric Woolfson at Abbey Road studios recording albums. The are doing it because of what The Alan Parsons Project meant to them in their lives, they are already successful musicians who don't need money or sudden fame if that's what you pretend to suggest.
@@Kaleiddmode I think we shall agree to disagree what "original" implies, your list is absolutely correct and the Cottles are brilliant musicians. I am not suggesting that they are dishonorable, I am suggesting that Mr Parsons may have a point in protesting the use of his name.
Mr. Parsons is quite right, the billing for The Project is misleading. Also, these people were not the original band, though that is a matter of how one defines 'original'. Yes, Andrew Powell appears on the debut album and Lenny Zakatak appears on 'I, Robot', but the 'original band' was essentially Scots popsters Pilot, which is no secret. The other players of The Project are all great and made appearances on subsequent albums but do not constitute the 'original' band. Maybe 'The Project Players - the musicians heard on the records of the Alan Parsons Project' would be more accurate and acceptable . Also FYI, original band members David Paton (bass, guitar, vocals) and Ian Bairnson (guitar, lead guitar) released in 2014 the album 'A Pilot Project' (notice that abbreviates to APP) the cover of which has the 'eye in the sky'. The 14 tunes are all APP, including 'Eye In The Sky', 'What Goes Up', 'Breakdown', 'Let's Talk About Me', 'Games People Play' etc. With the exception of Paton and Bairnson, there are not other APP players involved. Here, penned by Paton, is an excerpt penned the booklet from that album. It refers to Parsons producing Pilot: 'Alan is a giant, 6'4"... had public schooling (note: British term for private schooling), was very much a gentleman and really good at his job. We couldn't have picked a better producer. he was quiet, no, reserved and only spoke when necessary. You could sit for hours with him on a mix without much being said. After a while you'd maybe hear him say 'any thoughts?' Very seldom, if ever did we have any negative comments about the mixes. He heard it exactly the way we heard it. He did a great job as a producer, but the playing and arrangements were left for to the musicians. It was the same with the Project.' Paton also notes, 'I tried my hardest to convince everyone that it would be a great idea to take the Project on the road. Ian (Bairnson) felt the same way. Our voices fell on deaf ears. Alan and Eric Didn't have much enthusiasm for live work at the time and the band wouldn't make a move as they thought Alan and Eric would object. I knew it was possible and was very frustrated with all of them. It wasn't until after the Project had finished that Alan approached me to do a one-off gig in Antwerp, Belgium in 1990 with the original line-up. That was an exciting and successful concert and I hoped it would have paved the way for the return of the Project. In the 1990s, Ian was instrumental in bringing Eric's songs to the live stage and he and Project drummer Stuart Elliott convinced Alan to tour the world extensively throughout the decade.' In addition to 'A Pilot Project' Paton, who has several solo albums, in 2020 Paton released 'The Traveller', which is billed as 'another Pilot project' though under his name. Sadly, Ian Bairnson, due to problems with his memory is not longer playing in a professional capacity. The link for the 'A Pilot Project' CD: www.apilotproject.com/buycd.htm
That is right, but Alan Parsons was only !!! the engineer, nothing else, the soundmakers were Paton, Bairnson and of course the late Eric Woolfson, who composed those songs !!!!
They sound much better than AP’s tribute band. AP should be honest, he was just the sound guy and he got lucky with the name of the band. The Eric Woolfson Project should have been.
You just nailed it !!!!!!!! He had the luck the his name was used of the band name, the creating mastermind was Eric Woolfson and the original session musicians like Paton or Bairnson, Elliott, Tosh and s on !!!!
That’s really strange because Jeff Lynne had the same issue ex members of ELO we’re calling themselves ELO part two and they had to change their name to The Orchestra because the last real member left. Now Jeff Lynne is touring as Jeff Lynne‘s ELO which I saw twice the past couple years.
Jeff has always been the principle of ELO. ELO II was a repugnant cash grab that offered none of the magic of ELO because that magic came from the genius, Jeff Lynne.
Jeff Lynne wrote and produced every ELO song, sans Roll Over Beethoven and pretty much was ELO. Although I'm glad the RRHOF acknowledged Bevan and Tandy. On the other hand, Parsons musical involvement was nominal at best. He's admitted that Eric Woolfson wrote almost everything. I guess when one's name is literally the bands name, that person feels they deserve all the credit.
It is too bad Jeff is so into himself though! I never seen that as much with any other musician actually. I have every ELO ALBUM and love them and Jeff is outstanding. But I think the "original ELO" up to Out of the Blue album will not be surpassed and this stuff Lynne is doing now is just to make money. The passion is not there. I never hear much on the fantastic musicians that were part of the Original ELO mentioned by Jeff. It is him him him. Yes he had the biggest part in making it all happen but he also had outstanding musicians with him and that goes too often not noticed and is wrong!
You are right an and ELO tribute band called ‘The Orchestra’ played in Fort Lauderdale many years ago opening for AP’s tribute band. Back then AP didn’t care about it.
I can understand the artists feeling like they were just cogs and Alan Parson's got all the credit. That's how he set it up. But if they want to show us it was they that deserve the credit for the great songs then they can make new ones. I think he's being too nice actually.
Woolfson was the HEART AND SOUL of TAPP.! Alan put it all together, yes. But there's NO HEART or SOUL in ANYTHING Alan has done since Eric's demise. But hey, what do I know?
I think that there was an amazing synergy between Eric and Alan. In fact, when they decided to split things never were the same for the two if them. While Eric produced Musical works for theater like POE, Alan decided to perform live due to the fact that new technologies allowed that.
