Thank you! It also includes duplicates of the three stones in the original, which you are paying for. As far as the strop... no thank you. My Hutsuls two sided strop is far more efficient and I can simply sit down anytime with it without breaking out a whole sharpening kit. In addition stropping is easily done alternating sides and that is simply easier to do quickly and efficiently on the handheld strop. Stropping is not nearly as angle critical as sharpening and honing so doing it by hand is fine.

This is a pretty good sharpener for easier steels to work with. My S30V Zero Tolerance is near impossible to get a shaving edge on this system. To address the motion best used for this, Work Shop themselves tested 4 methods: Push only, pull only, pull sweeping, and saw (manual recommended) and the push only motion resulted in the sharpest blade.

The width of the blade changes its distance from the vertical adjuster, therefore the angle is NOT representable by the written markings. The best you can do is manually check your angles and then note what "angle" you set to to achieve that on a given blade.

I absolutely love my WSPA. I definitely have to snag that upgrade kit
I also completely agree that rolling the tip and not getting a fully sharp heel are very real for me personally. On my elementum, I accidentally went too far over and hit the ricasso. Not just that, but I can't get to the very heel of my Para 3's and definitely won't be able to on my pm2

I really like mine, for sure need to get the upgrade kit. FWIW I’ve found you can get pretty close to mirror by adding some horizontal strokes with each grit after you’ve popped your burr. So I’ll raise the burr going up and down perpendicular to the blade but then I do passes running it along the blade (sort of like how you did your strip, just heel to tip) to clean it up and take any of the messy scratches that can be left. Found it has worked well for me to go from sharp but sloppy edges to sharp and near-mirror.

Really like your videos in general, this one was also quite helpful. Been looking at this sharpener on Amazon for a while, this convinced me to give it a try. By hand, with wet stones I can do a passable job on quite a few of my knives, but I also have a lot I've tried to sharpen and they ended up in worse shape than before I started. Put one of my old favorites a GEC bull buster on this for a first try, and it came out quite well. Just FYI. Hope you and your family had a very happy Thanksgiving.

The additional abrasives is a solid upgrade to an excellent sharpener. What I'd really like to see is an entirely new upgrade to include a clamp that has less flex where it joins the base. As well, there are now third party stone holders for the Worksharp that hold standard KME abrasives.
Great review and channel. Many thanks! 👍🗡️👍

I know this is an old thread...but I totally agree. The flex where the clamp joins the base drives me crazy! Before anyone says it, I'm not pushing hard. I received the elite version last week. All I used before was standard stones and I trashed my blades with them. Using the 220 I reprofiled all my knives and put a near mirror edge on them. For the price this kit it awesome. The base needs to be heavier or provide a good way to clamp it. I also found that the clamp that holds the blade moves a bit if under a bit of pressure from a heavier kitchen knife. I find that holding the base with my thumb on the top side of the blade clamp holds the base and the clamp in place well enough. Does cause some hand fatigue however. At 40 and married, I’m used to the fatigue.

I bought one of those about 6 months ago, w/out the upgrade. It did a decent job. My problem, and it could have been me, is the entire clamp device would flex a little, surely throwing off the selected angle. I ended up using my off hand to brace it clamp device from underneath. I wasn't pressing down hard at all either, just using the weight of the stone. Regardless, it got every knife I put on it sharp. I even re-angled the blade on one knife so it would fit a "V" style pocket sharpener I carry for field use.

I've have my kme sharpener for 3 years now. A couple months after I got it I upgraded and got some lapping films and water stones. I can clamp pocket, kitchen, camping knifes in and get any of them to surgically sharp. KME is Definitely more expensive but for the simplicity and convenience I think it's worth it. Plus I like to show off so alot of my pocket knifes and kitchen knifes to a mirror polish. When someone notices that attention to detail the loose their shit

I like to do the sawing motion like shown up to the ceramic. On the ceramic I like to do the same motion you did as stroping, a fluid sweep from heel to tip. Gets it closer to mirror and I can get as close a shave as a razor can get with any of my knives

    • @kennethfharkin
      @kennethfharkin 2 года назад

Keep sawing with the ceramic and get a two sided Hutsuls strop. They are cheap, easy to use and incredibly effective. Generally you can bring the edge back from normal use by simply stropping and after using the worksharp ceramic it will finish it to a spectacular edge. It is easier to use simply sitting and watching tv and doesn't require setting up.

Wondering if as little as I use it, if this would be worth selling and downgrading. I don't care much about a mirror edge, so for half the cost it seems like this is just as effective.

I've been very tempted by this. But I have settled that my sharpmaker is everything I need. I get hair popping, newspaper slicing edges off the fine stones. I also have 8x3" extra coarse, coarse, and fine DMT stones that I lean on the rods to reprofile with. Honestly, for around the same price, this worksharp or a sharpmaker with a 6x2" extra coarse and fine stone, are pretty even in my mind. For only smaller knives, say under 6 inches, the worksharp is probably the way to go. But the sharpmaker with the bench stones has far more versatility. It isn't limited by blade size or width (ie kitchen knives 8+inches and small penknife blades like the small victorinox blade), it sharpens scissors, and can be used as a set of bench stones for shears, axes, etc. It doesn't have the angle selection though. So pick your poison. I have the full set of Spyderco bench stones as well as the DMT bench stones and sharpmaker as mentioned, so I can't justify buying the worksharp. But damn I still want it!

I would buy the standard version if you could buy the strop for it....i don't need the full upgrade.

Why does the upgrade give you an additional 600 Grit and not give a 800 and maybe a 1.,000 or 1,200

      It does. You get 220, 320, 400, 600, 800, ceramic and a strop

Yea, it's strange that they would give you a duplicate of what already comes standard.

Maybe a noob question, but if you set the knob to 15 degrees (all the way down), is that 15 per side, so a total bevel of 30 degrees? Most folders come factory at around this setting, but that's all the way down on the adjustment, and your video shows you using 19 per side, or 38 inclusive, and you say you would prefer 20 per side or 40 inclusive. Can someone elaborate on this? Does that mean you can't go for a thinner bevel (a good japanese chef knife will be at about 12 degrees per side) with this unit?

Or is setting the knob to 15 degrees going to give me a 7.5 degree bevel (which is more on the order of a cut-throat straight razor) on each side?

Just to clarify you can get a mirror finish with this tool. No the stones that come with it won't provide a mirror finish, but you can buy some after market parts and lapping films that work on this which will produce a mirror finish.
Not to say you're wrong or attack you, but I've just recently seen a couple people say it's impossible to get a professional finish with this even with accessories, and Knaves Knives has done it several times on his channel.
So possible? Yes. With the stones they provide? No.

What makes this kit better than other clamping kits? Easier use? Better stones?

Best for the price. The only other “clamping kit” in this price range is the lansky and this is way better

On the web site the guy shows sweeping the abrasive from one end to the next not back and forth like you were doing it. First time I have seen anyone doing it like that . Wonder if Worksharp changed how they recommend doing it
