what I learned quickly is once you learn to sharpen, most factory edges seem bad. most are bad they belt sharpen and it normally takes 2-4 sharpenings to get into good steel. thanks for the video
I have noticed that as well, I usually don't leave a factory edge on a knife for very long anymore, thinking of getting a TSProf system, I really like well machined stuff and their stuff is beautifully machined.
I use the Wicked Edge for 10 years now and am extremely satisfied. However, it is important that you put some tape around the knife, because otherwise the metal dust gets in the pivot. You can then hear and feel it when you open the knife and have to clean it…
@@Rich_EDC I use the worksharp precision adjust on my benchmades and it works great especially for the price point, you can get razor sharp even without the upgrade kit
Always set the angle zero to the wicked edge base. I have seen a few people zero it on what they think is a flat table or the table the wicked edge is sitting on.
Thanks for the clarification at the end. I believe the price of a sharpener should be about in line with your average knife. Right now for me, that’s $100-200, and the work sharp seems perfect.
The new precision adjust professional seems like it addressed all the major issues with the original precision adjust, although I wish it had a stone holder that worked with any stones, I am betting a mod for it will be out soon that allows just that.
I was watching you're regrets video where you talked about sharpening, and thought about commenting that you should post a sharpening video... and here we are!
I got my Buck Marksman in my pocket that I sharpened like a year ago. I strop to maintain the edge but that's its. It's still very sharp. Wicked Edge is great. I'm bout $1500 in with accessories or more. It's really great. I love to free hand sharpen too. Which kind of gives you the same feeling.
Great video! I own a sharpening business. I’m in process of getting the gen 4 WE to add to my equipment. I currently have the Work Sharp Elite for my workhorse, due to the volume of knives I sharpen. I also have the Edge Pro Professional for hand sharpening. I started with the Sharpmaker, which still has its place. Again great video!!
I purchased the wicked edge early after buying my first knife, I also now sharpen the kitchen knives for no e and family, quick and easy system, I would suggest buying the strop handles they are finish of the knives to a buff and sharpness.
A Wicked Edge GO is superb and really doesn’t get reviewed as much as it should. Not as precise as the pro models, but with practice and the stones and strops you need, you can still get great results.
I've got my process down. I use Japanese stones which stay in water, finish them up with porcelain rod and strop. I use a work sharp grinder for my wood working tools.
What you can do if you feel so inclined is buy a set of the blank patens and attach your own leather to make some strops. You can use your own leather whatever you prefer and they work out a lot cheaper. Something you may like to think about. 👍
I'm sure once you get it figured out and everything, it's much quicker and consistent, but I've never found an easier and more consistent and reliable sharpening system than my WSPA!!!
the trick to keeping a blade for a very long time is to use the strops that you can get from wicked edge. When i get my edge the way i like it i literally never use a stone on it. All my knives are the same degree so i just break out my wicked edge and hit it a few times with a strop and bam its good.
Some dudes on the WE forum sell after market parts that fix the wandering set screws. It's more money, but what's money once you've invested this much?
Sometimes. When I’m bored I resharpen knives that are already razor sharp. I truly believe that’s there are many levels of “razor sharpness”. I am still in search of the highest level.
Why would you get a freehand system when you have this, the field sharpener and precision adjust ? I’d call it quits with all that and just get more grits for all those systems
Thank you for the video. I still use my cheapo Lansky even on my custom knives. I generally use the sapphire stone and a ceramic stone which are the finest and then I strop. I only have reprofiled a couple of esee knifes and a few of the good d2 Chinese flippers that are cheap. I still can't get myself to justify the price for other sharpening systems that do almost the same thing. Hopefully I won't be sorry
I just unpacked my WE Carbon and every video on their playlist shows them going down instead of up with the stroke. Is there a benefit to the way that you are doing it? My first run on the practice knife wasn't very good but i know it is a learning process. I ran the 200, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, & 2200. I know that is ridiculous but I wantsd to try them all. Lol.
You’re supposed to run the stones down. I guess not technically supposed to. Both methods produce a heck of a sharp knife. But you’ll get better results running the stone towards the spine.
@wrxified thanks. I finally got it down after some practice and you are right. These knives are crazy sharp. I thought that my Ken Onion did good (which it does) but this thing is on another level.
I'm upgrading from a Whetstone because as much as I love it, human error is unavoidable. So I'm getting a fixed angle so I can get the exact angle I want. I'm definitely not getting rid of my Whetstone though
I find myself using my WE less and less nowadays. My problem with it is setting up the knife each time and the way a single pivot sharpener curves the tip of the blade…. Doesn’t look good
You're not using it right then. My problem is I can't get a consistent edge anymore. And if you use this guy's method, you'll micro chip the apex. I have a love hate twosome with the WE
One thing that I'm super anal about is keeping the grits separate from each other. I will totally wipe down the blade after every grit to keep the larger particles from getting onto the higher grit stones. I like a very uniform edge and sometimes I will do a mirror on my lesser used knives or just straight up pocket jewelry for special occasions and when you are on the last couple of grits, if you happen to have a few particles from the first few stones still on the knife, it will leave scratches on the edge and you then have to go back to the grit that caused the scratches to clean it up. On my work or beater knives, I could care less, but when you spend half an hour carefully crafting that edge to be perfect, it sucks to have it scratched up at the last portion.
If you want to learn free hand, Spyderco makes three stones (medium, fine, ultra fine) that’ll run you about $150 that can put a mirror edge on a blade.
Start with a straight edged blade. Simple, your wrists never move. Then move to a blade that’s symmetrical top to bottom like the Spyderco Smock. It’s easier to sharpen them because the side to side motion is the same. I still have problems with recurves.
Big Appreciation on honesty, love all your videos but dude u have so much superb kit could you try show what a super expensive custom folder sharpened to precook perfection Candi beyond a more budget item sharpened to the same degree? I feel it would show an interesting point between high end and low end, what can be used and abused and what must be treated as blade treasure because in fairness there is a big difference between a knife that cuts tape and one you can baton through metal and how much of a difference that edge formed through superior sharpening would A effect cutting and Bdamage the longevity of the blade…. Long question I know but EG baton a tin with an opined, a SAK blade, a Civvi and a custom with super steel? What’s the difference?
As a Animal Science major in college I was required to learn to sharpen knives in my butchering class on a 3 stone sharpener, love that style. I kill edges with baler twine, which why my main knife is actually my trusty husky folding utility knife. I have other knives for non abusive work and a multi tool.
The Wicked Edge is in my opinion, over engineered, but badly designed. Get yourself a TSProf and you'll never go back. They're sharpeners are works of art.
But how did you know it was 25 ? Please I’m going to attempt to sharpen a 2400 dollar knife lol I don’t understand after you used the Sharpie how that gave you 25 degrees
