Yamaha Stage Custom Birch Recording Session

  • Here's a track that I recorded on a recent session. It was written by my good friend Mark Peric and is called Immaculate Misconceptions. Mark plays all the other instruments on this track.
    RAW AUDIO
    Since my last video I've been asked to put something up with the raw drums sounds. Well here it is. At around 1 minute into this track the music fades leaving just the processed drums. At around 1.15, I bypass the processing and what your left listening to is the raw sound of the drums. For this session I didn't use any other preamps apart from the console (Neve Custom 75). At 1.30 the processing is re-activated and then the music comes back in at about 1.45. Hopefully you'll be able to hear the raw tone of these drums.
    THE KIT
    This kit is the new Yamaha Stage Custom Birch released in 2015. I am using slightly different sizes to the kit I used in my previous video. This kit has 10" 12" 14" toms, a 20" kick drum and a 14"x5.5" snare drum. I've used Remo clear Emperors on the toms, a PS3 on the kick and a coated Ambassador on the snare drum. This time I've used my own hardware (as opposed to the hardware package supplied with the kit). The cymbals are Paiste Twenty series 12" Hats and 10" splash, a dimensions 20" Dry Ride and 17" and 19" 2002 crashes.

    I was fortunate enough to be able to buy literally any drum kit I wanted just last week. I chose these Yamaha Stage Customs over everything. They are not just "a great kit for the money," they're an exceptional kit at any price. I set these all up in my studio with Evans G2 coated heads, Evans EMAD system for the kick, and surrounded them with Zildjian A's...they play, feel, sound, and record flawlessly. Yamaha KNOWS how to make drums. Get over what name is on your kit, and you'll be a very happy drummer with the Stage Customs from Yamaha.

      +Jeff Smith Hey Jeff. In my opinion these new Stage Custom Birch kits from Yamaha represent the best value for money in their price range at this time. No other drum company supplies a 10 lug snare drum in this price range. All other brands have 8 lug snare drums. The finishes are top quality and the sound is better than anything else at this level.

Yamaha was not on my radar when I first started looking ("don't they make motorcycles?"), but I am so glad I took my time as this seems to be the exact sweet spot for upper-entry level kits. Bought this kit as a knock around for my grands. Was amazed at the sound of them, especially recorded. Mine is in Cranberry red and was bought from a large music retailer that has annual drum competitions. Mine was the last kit they had and was a floor model used for the drum competition, which garnered extra $$ off, even though it was part of a Christmas sale. Plus, they replaced all the factory heads with Remos. Oh yeah, there was an added buyers incentive that gave me a Sabian bronze cymbal set as a freebee. Mine was a five piece (10, 12, 14, 20 +snare) but since then I had scoured Amazon and added on a 13 and 16. Still considering looking for an 18 floor tom and 22 kick.
    Absolutely still smiling and considering this one of my best musical purchases ever.
    No, the grands never get to play them.

I have since sold my recording customs and have two Stage Custom kits and money in my pocket. I have had no complaints in sound while playing live or recording. Now the finish is a bit better on the recording customs but the new stage customs are pro quality all the way. I'm sure that Yamaha sells more stage customs than any other model in there line. I also don't like a large hole in the resonant head. Most of the time my microphone set up for recording is a Shure Beat 91 inside the kick resting on the blanket, a beta 52 or Audio D6 at the sound hole and some kind of ambient or sub mic in front of the kick.

      Hey Jim Jam. The new recording custom 20" bass drums come with a riser built into the hoop. @@darranmuller Btw, I bought a used Yamaha Stage Custom Birch bop kit (complete with matching snare, stands and cymbals) from Gumtree for AU$500 during the pandemic. Insane value for money.

    Sorry for the millions of questions, but I own this exact shell combo and can't get the same sound!
    Is the front bd head unported? (it looks like it still could be)
    Did you put any muffling inside the bd or against the heads?
    I get the best sound I can out of the toms by tuning both heads just past wrinkling, but they don't sound as good as this; how did you tune them? I use Remo pinstripes

    Are they tuned or straight out the box

    Hey! Have you checked the bearing Edge of the resonant side of the snare? I got the exact kit 5 months ago and just realized that it is completely flat on 2 sides of the bearing Edge, it doesn't have the angle all the way around, which cause the head to sit properly. 😕 Is it normal?

    Hi Darran, I want to buy a stage custom set and I was wondering if I should get the 20” or the 22” bass. I was wondering if the 20” is capable live and in the studio or I’d need a 22”? I wanted to hear this from someone who has played both.

    Hi Darran ! Im a chilean drummer and I have this kit... I just love it. But I really need some tuning advices ! I just signed with aquarian drumheads, what series would you recommend me? Greetings

      +taffydonicke Hey Taffy. I just commented on the video about this. Good work on the aquarian signing. I'm not really familiar with their products but you should have some good results with your drums if you use a slightly thicker head on the top than the head on the bottom of the drums (Toms). Talk soon!

      +Darran Muller Hi Darren. I was searching about comparision between Remo and Aquarian, I realized that Emperor is called Response 2 in Aquarian. I just cant wait to play with my new heads and find the right tune. Thanks for the advice. Hugs from Chile. Taffy

    Hello sir and greetings from Greece. Very nice performance and your recording setup is amazing. I am an owner of a stage custom kit and I was wondering, what stand are you using for you splash cymbal attached on the toms holder? Thank you in advance!

    • @darranmuller
      @darranmuller  4 года назад

      Hi Chris. Thank you for your lovely words. I'm glad you liked this video. The attachment with the splash cymbal is a CH750 Cymbal Holder by Yamaha. you should be able to order on of these from any Yamaha dealer or online store.

    wow fantatic sound from the kit, and great demo! you mentioned mics for the bass drum, what mics are you using for the toms snare and overheads please? thanks...

      The tom mics are all Sennheiser MD421 by the looks of it. No Idea about the other ones.

    Damn i rarely see a demo of drum kit i own, it sounds good. The only down side is the snare isnt suitable for high tuning. After 3 years playing high tuning on snare the lugs broken 1 by one until 5 of them lol

    Is that the 20" Kick? Emperor tom batters? Is this the same kit you did the Toto medley on?

    Is the PS3 on the kick drum a clear or coated? Do you tend to bury the beater? Also, what kind of beater are you using? Thanks so much!

    • @darranmuller
      @darranmuller  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, I bury the beater. The head is a clear PS3. Pretty sure I used the stock standard Yamaha felt beater on this session.

    Nice tight crack to the snare drum 🥁! None of that cheap ass 90’s style ring to it. Also, the toms are very punchy and powerful and also lack that cheap sounding over ring. An absolutely superb set for around 700 bucks!

    How do you tune those toms to sound so good? I have this kit and I can never get them sounding like that. They are either way to high or have disgusting overtones. I'm considering getting remos because I love how good it sounds in this video. I have g2 but it sounds like garbage at the pitch yours are at

    • @Assimilator702
      @Assimilator702 7 лет назад +2

      Drew Godsell Get some Remo. Evans heads go dead after a while. Remo heads that are beat up usually have more tone than a slightly used Evans head. Remember the sound is in the heads.

    • @SimonChampagne
      @SimonChampagne 7 лет назад

      I have to second that! Evans heads sound very good out of the box but an hour or 2 later, tone starts to fade away quickly. Check out Aquarian too, great stuff.

      Simon Champagne I heard from my former drum shop owner that Evans DOES use inferior Taiwan made plastics. He had alot of industry connections and was privy to all the inside industry stuff. I guess when you sponser drum clinics for 30+ years when NO ONE was doing them, you make a few friends.
