    Don Corleone would make a great devil template. "I will do this for you now, and consider it a gift. One day, and perhaps that day never comes, I may need a service..."

      Well yes, except for the "consider it a gift" talk. I don't think a Devil would give that suggestion that there was no quid pro quo. But I can definitely see a Devil doing the players (especially Lawful players) a favour in exchange for a favour to be named some time in the future. I can especially see a Devil enjoying this with a Lawful Good or, a fortiori, a Paladin.

    Made a deal with Mephistopheles, while contacting him I was on hold for 666 minutes, then I got redirected, was told I would be called back in 5-10 business days and just kind of had to wait. After 6 days 6 hours and 6 minutes Mephistopheles showed up while still on the phone with a client and was wearing a black pinstripe suit. I'm not making this up this was something my DM made me do to contact him. I wound up selling my soul to resurrect the rest of the party. Reading the contract made me go blind. "Liars and charlatans". Careful now, that's *exactly* what devils *are not*.
    One of my favourite quotes from the D&D novels I've read is from a cambion, and he said "I didn't lie. I wasn't forthcoming; there's a difference." What makes devils great is how they will act to the letter of their word, but not necessarily the spirit. If they say they will do something, they will do exactly that, but they'll interpret it in the way that is most convenient or beneficial for them. It's actually quite literally _impossible_ for a full-blooded devil to explicitly _lie_, to the extent that a cambion who has lived their whole lives in the Hells can be completely surprised and sickened (in much the same way Zuko became sick in Avatar, when he started doing good) when they _do_ tell a lie.
    That is explicitly true in the Forgotten Realms, and may not apply to all worlds, though personally it's what I love about them, so I'd recommend DMs run them that way in any world.

    • @jimdavis141
      @jimdavis141 8 лет назад +37

      Hate to break it to you, but it's possible for Devils to lie. If not, then why do Barbed Devils, Bone Devils, and Imps (and even Cambions) have proficiency in Deception? How can they " manipulate humanoid rulers...fomenting paranoia" (MM. 66) without using lies as one tool among many? It's also " in the nature of Devils to scheme". Being lawful does not preclude deception and manipulation clearly.
      I like the quote from the Cambion you gave because it shows us a different take on devil's attitudes towards deception, but I also wouldn't take anything a devil, or a fiend in general, says at face value. They are evil as well as lawful and have many tools at their disposal to dominate, manipulate, and terrorize.
      I think perhaps that Devils just want everyone to think they're incapable of lying. Those filthy, chaotic demons are the real liars, not us upstanding lawful fiends.

    • @dominicg7125
      @dominicg7125 8 лет назад +17

      I feel like it's somewhere in the middle. One of the best ways to deceive someone is to include some truth in one way or another, mixed within the lies. Your quote is a good example of that, to say it's impossible for them to lie seems like a bit of a stretch.

    • @JimCullen
      @JimCullen 8 лет назад +60

      James Davis deception is not just lying. And devils will most certainly make use of more subtle means of deceiving people. That's kind of the point. You can trust a devil to do what they say they will do, but not necessarily in the way you expect or want.
      You make a deal that they'll protect you from harm for 10 years? Well sure, but you've been put in stasis for that whole time. You're completely safe in there! Shame about missing a decade of your life.
      Or you've summoned a devil in a circle that's supposed to keep them trapped there (but unbeknownst to you, the circle is faulty and they could escape whenever they want). A friend of yours expresses concern, to which the devil says "look, I'm inside the binding circle" to attempt to alleviate your friend's concern. They didn't actually say "I'm trapped in here", because that would be a lie, but they _implied_ that to be the case.
      Point is, there's a lot of room to deceive people by leaving out information; letting them assume things, and simply refraining from correcting them, or deliberately implying something without outright saying it
      It's what makes them so fun. You can make a deal with the devil, and if you're careful, you might be able to outsmart them and get something that is mostly beneficial to you. But you can't be that careful, because this is what devils _do_, and they can _always_ find some loophole. If a devil can just go back on its word entirely, that little game becomes meaningless.
      A lot of the things you've said are absolutely spot on:
      > It's also " in the nature of Devils to scheme". Being lawful does not preclude deception and manipulation clearly.
      > I also wouldn't take anything a devil, or a fiend in general, says at face value.
      those two little bits in particular do not preclude a devil's technical honesty at all. It's just that, canonically, in the Forgotten Realms (and of course, in other settings this may not be true - as well as any DM of course being free to change canon as suits them, even if they are in the Realms - though personally it's a trait that I really like and would encourage DMs to use in their own worlds), devils quite literally cannot tell an outright lie. From memory, I think it's described as a devil who did tell a lie "would be undone", or something like that.
      Your last paragraph is a really compelling interpretation, and it could be interesting to play them out like that, especially if a major theme in your campaign were law vs chaos. But I do think that to some extent, that would diminish what makes devils great antagonists.
      I'd highly recommend the Brimstone Angels series of FR novels for anyone interested in devils, because a couple of the major characters in that series are cambions, and we get to see an inside look of Baatorian politics in a really interesting way.

      At the very least, Devils cannot renege on an agreement in the baseline 5e mythos. The DM guide and Monster Manual specifically says that all deals made with devils are enforced, on all sides, by the will of Asmodeus and by extension the plane of Hell. Not the residents of Hell, the plane itself. The will that holds the throne of Nessus rules the plane and their will becomes law.

    Devils are a great villain, story arc provider, or bothersome nemesis.
    My favorite devil so far in any campaign has been an Imp named Felzig who perpetually spoke in a Brooklyn accent and pulled sort of "Bugs Bunny" physics by producing newspapers to read, smoked cigars, and always complained about how you couldn't "get a decent bagel around here." Using the devil's manipulation, he would always "interpret" his master's commands, but the results were always a little darker than the master asked for. "Ey! I did what you asked! Whaddayagonnado? /shrug"
    I had an idea for a campaign arc called "The Lesser Evil" where the war in the lower planes was starting to openly bleed into the prime material. Demons are openly loosed upon the mortal world where they would otherwise be unable to do so because of "the rules". Basically, the devils in this campaign seek the manipulation of mortals, but the demons just want carnage. The devils know that the Gods will invoke an apocalypse to cleanse the land if the demons aren't rounded up and put back in the Abyss, and the Devils would rather have mortals to manipulate than lose everything. The conundrum? Can the players work with a devil to do so without being corrupted by the devil in question? Can they work with evil to stop a worse evil and still keep their alignments intact? And can they pull it off before the Gods notice?
    Unfortunately, I don't have players locally that would either go for it or could approach the moral questions asked by the arc in a reasonable manner.

      I would think my favorite devil would be the immoral personalities of an player .... the growing greed of the party rogue, the bloodlust of the barbarian, etc. Sometimes it grows to the point where if they're a Good/Neutral party, that they begin to question themselves about their actions. The growing corruption is what I love >:3

      Though it’s tougher to dm, you could have them fight larger groups of weaker melee enemies. Perhaps, you could introduce an npc or merchant that’s a great character, that they would want to survive and then force them to use certain spells or make tougher decisions.
      Knowing their spell slots and designing enemies and situations around the spells at their disposal can force them to make tough decisions. Which is the most you can do at higher levels without being an asshole dm aiming for a wipe.

    So its kinda tricky because in my campaign, the king of the demons (the embodiment of chaos) essentially tricked one of the gods into blowing a hole in the world that leads to hell. So now I don't really run devils as tricksters behind the scenes...because yhey dont have to be. EVERY devil can just walk onto earth. So I play them as the substitute for the classic "evil empire" (with the exception of contract devils).

  • @TVlord5

    One of my favorite details about Devils comes from the Pathfinder lore, that the torture of the hells isn't for punishment, or even just out of sadism, but because that's how you make stronger devils, basically EXTREME Spetznaz (or any kind of special forces that does pain resistance training) Like even just the very lowest of devils. I mean like I just thought of this now: The devils use magic to keep you from dying (or maybe just already dead, whatever) and prevents your brain from not shutting out pain. You will ALWAYS feel pain. So your "training" is non-stop torture that never fades for YEARS until you just stop caring about the pain. And during that process there's no doubt youd be just a mess of blood, mangled flesh and scar tissue (a Lemure) and at the end, once you are now immune to pain, you are remade into your new diabolic body. This kind of view gives to me a MUCH more complex kind of evil for reasons other than greed or sadism. It's effective and will eventually work on anyone. Some people will never become a noble hero worthy of the legions of heaven, but any old schlub can be tossed into the torture factory and crank out powerful soldiers

    I heard a good argument of how demons and devils should be handled within any work of fiction containing them.
    1. Devils/Demons are always evil.
    2. An agreement with a devil will always lead to a bad outcome.
    3. Devils/demons will always corrupt good intentions.

      Personally I prefer to not have devils be always trying to screw over the one their making deal with.
      I prefer to run devils as lone sharks who you could reasonably pay back but likely won't (about 30/70)

    I had an idea for an evil campaign. The party makes a deal with a devil to get out of hell at the beginning. The party is supposed to become heroes, and use their reputation as hero's to corrupt some good clerics and lords.
    The party gets to fight all the standard monsters, but they also get to fight some cool good enemies as well.

    thank you guys. I have been playing since 1981 or so, but stop around when 3.5 came out and just got back into it this year.
    I have a campaign going that involves demons and devils. Mostly, I have felt they don't seem as imposing as they should in plot as well as in stat stature, which turn me back to older editions for inspiration. As with the other video you two did, I am not sure how to mask their involvement past hints maybe or have a figure that is referred to or envisioned as a silhouette in a dream? I don't know. Thanks!

    D&D is about telling epic stories. In order to have song-worthy sagas of celebration, one must have worthy foes, with nefarious agendas to oppose and overcome. Starwars IV A New Hope, wasn't thrilling because Darth Vader was a sweater wearing high school guidance counselor, but because he could reach across the room and choke you out over the intervening distance for daring to dispute the POWER of the Dark Side! The Ring Wraiths weren't bullying jocks, but undying evil incarnate, looking to consume whoever stood between them and the One Ring. So yes, for the "Paladin In Hell" to be a story worth playing and worthy of retelling, there have to be foes equal, if not exceeding the ability of the Paladin. Perhaps he will meet his end here, but if he does, you can bet it will be epic, and in pursuit of goals worth sacrificing oneself for.
    ...but hey, what do I know?

    Hi guys I'm going to DM for the first time ever for a short adventure and one of the encounters is going to be with a creature that appears like a harpy or a succubus made of living gold and silver who tempts those who go into her lair into selfish wishes and those who succumb she steals their souls and sends them to her realm for punishment, those who can resist her temptations and will make a selfless request she will help. First of all does something like this exist since I can't find anything similar in the monster manual, second is this more of a demon or a devil or something completely different?

    • @franzlimit
      @franzlimit 7 лет назад +1

      Probably this allready happened in your game now? Anyway you shouldn't give it a second thought. It is a great idea for a unique creature and it really doesn't need to be in the monster manual to use it. Just take for example the stats of a Succubus from the monster manual (or any other fitting creature) and give it your own appearance, character and background.
      Generally spoken your harpy/succubus sounds very lawful since it clearly follows some rules. So I would either put it into the devil or fey domain. (feys can have every alignment) You could even make this creature lawfull neutral if you twist the background of it a bit. Maybe it is mindless and just follows instructions. Maybe it is a creature which is good at heart (that's why it doesn't just take souls but give their victims at least a chance) but a devil/hag has controll over it somehow, so it is forced to collect those souls.
      Putting in creatures which nobody knows can generally be a nice thing because it prevents everyone from meta-gaming.

    Is it possible to play a dnd campaign were the pc:s are Devils? Is it practically possible with the rules as of now? I'm a little curious how a game of Devils would be using the DND 5e rules.
