- A flight of American B-25 Mitchell bombers are intercepted on a raid over Europe by Messerschmidt Bf-109 fighters. This video takes you through what it was like to be the German fighter tasked with meeting the American bombers! This German Pilot is forced to make an emergency landing after taking heavy damage. This video was made using the IL-2 Sturmovik Combat Flight Simulator Great Battles series. (Kuban, Stalingrad, Moscow, Bodenplatte).

I see one problem to the video in tht the b-25 never had a ballturret to defend the bottom of the aircraft with
@@josiahrickens4556 Oh yes it had it! B-25 C had a remotely operated, retractable ventral turret. True, crews used to get rid of it through field modifications, but nonetheless it is not an inaccuracy! ; - )
1 tiny little thing: the 4 109’s that took off formed a schwarm, not a gruppe. But overall, amazing vid bro!

The best sim I ever played.
This is quite touching, in a way. I played that mission some time ago (with a little more success, I got three or four B25s, but also had to do an emergency landing, which had been much less smooth). The runway for takeoff is a half an hour drive from where I live, and a fifteen minute walk from one of our company's locations, with which I'm dealing every day. The remainders of the airfield are still there. Trying to imagine that things were so much different just a few decades ago is quite surreal.
Great mission and flying, it's always great when the attacker gets his lumps too. Those gamers that can fly into a formation without a scratch, their videos are edited to the max. Great video
being a WWII buff, really enjoyed it. But I do believe the B-25s would be in a closer formation.

Can't imagine how brave both the B25 crews and 109 pilots must have been shooting with machines guns at each other any of the bullet holes could have passed your body... At the end when the 109 touched down with engine quitting he should have nosed down a bit more to gain speed to avoid stalling while still high and falling hard to the ground which could have collapsed the gear.

I recall reading about an 'experte' (I cannot recall his name and can't find him in my sources-yet)from JG51 who was KIA when he attacked a formation of B25s somewhere over Italy. He made an ill planned attack from the upper right quarter right into the fire zones of top and tail turrets of nearly all the bombers in the group. I recall reading it in a now long lost copy of Jerry Scutts 'BF109 Aces of North Africa and the Mediterranean".
It did it's job very well!, and landed so the aircraft us recoverable, a bit of work for the mechanics, but recoverable!

Attack from their 10 and 2 O'clock high or low. That's where their guns are most vulnerable and most difficult to take shots at you. High gives you potential energy while low would provide camouflage. For the sake of realism, use my tactics I'm suggesting to you. It will likely result in you giving hits not get hit and returning to base to fly another day. For the sake of gaming...well just fly in circles and shoot at whatever comes in your sight.

The ME 109 had narrow undercarriage with wheels canted outwards making landings and take-offs dangerous.
I'm amazed he got off at all shoving a 109 straight up to full throttle like that.
Not really that bad youv'e consumed to much 109 bashing allied propaganda, the Spitfire had marginally narower landing gear, the Wildcat was narrow too! The 109 was the greatest fighter of ww2 amassing a staggering kill total of 20-30000 if not more ,i have never come across a definitive figure,but JG-52 (the experten fighter wing) had 10 -15000 kils on it's own , so go figure what they had to be all together! The Germans were f'ing good!
A fine fighter. Had to be careful at take off. Also be careful not run out of gas returning the channel. Had limited range. Deadly fighter in hands of experienced pilot. @@janmale7767

Excellent. What happened to the mitchell's rear gunner ? Glad you attacked head on but rear attack seemed "courageous" .. suicidal ? :D
These Mitchell variants didn't have tail gunner position. Instead they had a second turret underneath the plane.
Im not playing il2...but im playing gunship sequel and i know how to fly plane, also dogfight....im always use bf109g...its the best german aircraft for me

Good fight and landing. But Bf-109 much better in attack from above. Climb up, fall in attack on target, so, you have sufficient speed to climb up again. Attacking a bomber from the stern and from behind is very dangerous.

IL-2 Great Battles series - I have all of them. If you are looking for Battle of Britain action, the IL-2 Cliffs of Dover game is what you are looking for but it isn't a part of this series.

B25 bombers didn’t have gun turrets in the bottom of the plane.
Probably a modification. Extra defence for dangerous missions

Why would an me109 come from behind on a fast bomber ? They would come from higher altitude and cut through.

how did you get that cinematic panning affect where the camera doesn't stay perfectly fixated on the plane?
Press F11, and it is free camera. Move it around with WASD then follow where ever you like with mouse.
@@TJ3 thanks. i mean the view where you're following the plane, but the plane doesn't stay locked in the center of the screen. like the f2 view but with wobbly camera effects
better to take your time, get out in front of the formation and dive down on them. Rear quarter attacks are going to get you creamed every time. Nice views though :)
Correct bit like attacking ground targets high speed pass will save your life.

Yeah I have been critical of bomber formations myself.
@@TJ3 I think it's maybe because the AI couldn't handle that many calculations with being that close.
Let's face it the AI is pretty dumb and dull sadly, but still a close formation of bombers would be lethal when trying to attack them.
good realism this game is beautiful but i think if it was players and not ai you would have die, making that longturn makes you loose energy and staying too long behind a bomber give more times for the gunners to aim you, the best i found is dive go away retake altitude and repeat, the faster you are, the harder it is to be shot down
What the hell?if this Me-109 G model,where is two 20mm cannon's on the wings?why they have only 2 machineguns?strange.
The G models all were armed with 2 machine guns in the nose and a cannon firing through the spinner, some G-6 models had cannons mounted in underwing pods but they weren't standard armament!

A powered ventral turret on a B-25?
Not bad but you would take less damage and deal more if you were always attacking 90 or 45 deflection high side plus the benefit of diving attacks in case fighter showed up. Chasing a bomber with 6 50 Cal's all shooting at you from 0 deflection hurts
i wouldn't like taking off in a plane cuz ya cant see whats actually in front of you all you see is the controls of your plane and whats on the left and right of your plane and the sky so taking off from a CV in the middle of the ocean OOOoooHHHHhhhhh Boy that would be something else

All the damage to the bf 109 was quite unnecessary because normal anti bomber attacks were done in dives from the sides and front. Any pilot knows not to fly in a straight line behind a bomber, especially a formation of them.
When was the B25 made for players?
AI is flying it in this video, not players
@ No, players cannot fly it yet. You can fly the A-20 though.

perhaps your graphics are turned down, but this doesn't look as visually impressive as cliffs of dover to me. I guess i'll stick with that as people say the flight models aren't as realistic on these newer games.
