The bells that I make ring; they are my loves, they love me well. I want to hear them sing, loud as they swing; my pretty bells. In thunder or hail, or in wind or in rain. Their song will never fail, singing through joy, singing through pain. Bells that ring when we're born, Bells that ring when we die. Bells that ring every day, every night, every hour. Bells that ring when we pray, Bells that ring when we cry. Bells that ring to wake us up when the sun lights the sky. For the feast of Rameaux, for the Quasimodo. For a bright Christmas day and for the day of all saints. For annunciation, for the resurrection. For St valentine day and for when Good Friday comes. Celebrations they sing, all processions they ring. The most beautiful day it is the feast of our lord. Days of years, days of kings. Easter day my bells ring. And on Pentecost day they sing with bright tongues of flame. Confirmation they sing, and communions they ring. Bells that toll for our death; Dies Irae, dies illa. For ascension they sing, for assumption they ring. Bells that bring us hosanna and sing hallelujah. The bells I hold most dear, of the beauties I have here. They are my Mary's three, all best friends to me. When my little Mary rings, when children die she sets them free. And my big Mary rings, when sailors set forth on the sea. But when my great Mary sings, when lovers exchange wedding rings. Then something in me always cries; then something in me always dies. To see their happiness, to see their tenderness. When a woman will not give me a single caress. My bells marry and blend, and take wings on the wind. In the midst of the stars up in the vaults of the sky. All these bells that I sound, Kyrie Elieson. Hosanna Allelujah Dies irae dies illa. Bells that mourn with the sad, bells that laugh with the glad. All these bells that have never not once rung out for me. The bells that I make ring; they are my loves, such joy they bring. I want to hear them sing, if Esmeralda does still live. To tell the world, that Quasimodo loves Esmeralda.
to be honest, i think all the versions are beautiful and the best. they are for all people to enjoy, some people only speak one language and they are trying to understand more, for the time being, the different versions are so people can enjoy the whole show and appreciate its beauty while trying to understand the original. just my take on it, being a spanish and english speaker, my current hobby is learning french and this show is my drive to learn it. so i can understand it in all its glory.
absolutely breath taking, though I love the French version, I'm really glad to hear this. now when I listen the it in French I'll have a better idea of what they are saying. I always get chills on that last note, no clue how he can make his voice so rough and yet soothing!
@BenderIsGreat It does lose some power in English I agree, especially in the line " when a woman won't give me a single caress" Vs. "When no woman would even look me in the eyes" the literal translation illustrates more Agony, it shows that Quasimodo would be happy with some recognition/acknowledgement....the word "Caress" points to sexual/intimacy....which Quasi does want, but it takes away from his true character of a tortured soul. just my view of it.
I actually think this is one of the better translated songs from the show. I have both recordings - the English highlights and the original French, and have always preferred the French (I'm American btw). Mostly it's a translation issue; if that had been done better and more consistently with it maybe I would feel differently. But this song does it better than most of the others on the English album. The trick is all the feast days...
Jasperhalover123: Some singers wouldn't sing in English. And if you're not happy with the english version, don't watch it! And so you know, I'm french. And really, such a song is tough because you can't change the names of the feasts... really good one!
This is the only song that matches with the french lyrics. Even in english this is the best song. And only Garou can sing it too. I don't like when others sing this song. Thank you.
Hey, this one isn't that bad in English either! I still like the French better, but at least it doesn't have stupid lyrics that really butcher it (like when a lot of the other songs were translated). Thanks for posting!
I was hoping my local Civic theater could do this show next year, but now I see that even the biggest stage they have won't hold this production. The stage just isn't big enough.
it's very weird to hear this in english! I know only the parts in "latin", lol :P lol :P It's weird to listen the adaptations of Notre-Dame-de-Paris in some other languages, lol :P I only know the lyrics of the original version, in french
I love the Italian. French is a beautiful language but I feel the Italians have done a better job , interpretation wise and Panella lyrics are amazing.
ok first the song is beautiful in french and this english version is slaughtering it. second the english version of this whole musical is once again i say slaughtering the beautiful french version of it which is the o.r.i.g.i.n.a.l. and i would know because i am french and i have seen the musical live. third of all those aren't the real voices of the singers. and fourth of all who in there right mind would do such a thing to such a beautiful story!!!!?????!!!!!????
God the English is bad. The translation just isn't there. The French will always be the best but Spanish Italian and even Korean have fantastic translations and Dubs

That's his tone.
I love this song in every language *___* Italian, French, English...
hij is nu in Vlaanderen komt volgend jaar hier heen. bij mijn favorieten staat een Nederlands liedje
Garou is amazing in any language
French is the best but the Russian and Italian are surprisingly good.

I like how the kept the lyrics more or less the same in most of the song. But still I'll go with french.

*-* Wow. Garou is my new favorite person. "My pretty bells" made me laugh though.

Barns and Noble does have one in English.
I was hoping my local Civic theater could do this show next year, but now I see that even the biggest stage they have won't hold this production. The stage just isn't big enough.
It's so weird to hear English appear to come out of Garou's mouth! I expect to hear the French and I'm surprised when I don't!
can you tell me where i can watch this song in german please!!! I love this song and this musical.
It wasn't ever made in german. Just French, Italian, Russian, Korean, & English.
do you have the songs in english for downloading?
wow this song is awsome in english!! i want to go to the dutch one!!
what is the name of the play
Notre Dame de Paris
i know Garou is the best, but could you please add the Ian Pirie version? I'm begging you! this is my all time favorite song!
it's very weird to hear this in english! I know only the parts in "latin", lol :P

not bad!
I don't think it's all that bad. At least, it's one of the better ones from the English version.
Good game, but ... I prefer the Russian version. Better, more elegant. Petkun, who is also Russian Quasimodo. Garou bravo anyway
Garouuuuuuuuuu
Try Barnes and Noble.
i wanna see it in german too
I love the Italian. French is a beautiful language but I feel the Italians have done a better job , interpretation wise and Panella lyrics are amazing.

Garou oui, c'est la sienne. Il chante en anglais.
some are worse. Listen to "Free Today" or "Torn Apart" - they're not quite as good.
I really wish there wasn't the choir in the background... I really want to hear Garou better...
I personnally that's what makes the song better
trust me, it looses all it's power in english
God the English is bad. The translation just isn't there. The French will always be the best but Spanish Italian and even Korean have fantastic translations and Dubs
Hello Starry Night 1313,
This is the reason why Notre Dame de Paris production is failed in USA and England, because it total ''Lost in translation''
Кошмар! Это надо же было так испортить песню!!!
This is an awfulk translation...ew...its horrible.
In Russian game is better in this song. sorry
