Do you know of any way to set up a light trap that doesn't kill the insects?
Of course, just remove the bucket and allow the insects to land on the sheet. You can document their arrival on paper or photograph. When you turn off the light you can gently shake the sheet and the insects will fly away. Best of luck studying the wonderful world of insects

Yes, for some locations I need a complete sample of all insects. In this case I needed such a sample. Rubbing alcohol keeps the insects preserved until they can be processed, pinned and studied. Best of luck in your studies. Mr. G
what collecting fluid used?
Wynona Marco we use water with a little bit of dish soap then pick the desired insects out of the water or if we are sampling an area for study rubbing alcohol then pour sample with all insects in bottle for analysis back at the lab. Best of luck, Mr. G
Hi, would any light work?
Insects will be attracted to porch lights, street lights etc. If you want to attract many different kinds of insects you need specific wave lengths of light. Check out this site the have some great products for night collecting.

Does the alchohol have an adverse effect on the moth wings?
+Jay Sav moths need to be air dried when taken out of of the alcohol before spreading. More convenient than using a chemical jar and a relaxer. If dried carefully before spreading specimens look very good.

+Lyric Meaoga will not hurt the wings of moths and butterflies but takes a little more work with air drying the wings. The front and hind wings tend to stick together when placed in isopropyl rubbing alcohol. The wings must be carefully separated with forceps or insect pins or they will stay stuck to each other. Both of the above mentioned insects have scaly wings and the less you touch them the better. I prefer not using rubbing alcohol if I have a freezer. Collecting at home or close access to a freezer is helpful. I don't like using relaxers because of the needed chemicals. For ease in the field I will always use rubbing alcohol. Best of luck, Mr. G

What is the largest moth there?
The two largest moths I have collected in our area are Antheraea polyphemus and Pachysphinx occidentalis. Both of these species have come to my light traps. They also have come to our porch light on a few occasions.

Sometimes the insect collected can be damaged in the process. The longer you collect the more techniques you learn to care for the specimens. No worries I am sure you will find another to take its place. Best of luck, Mr. G

Leps in alcohol is not the best practice.
Using a chemical relaxers would be ideal. One can also use the freezer if the Leps are fresh and not dried.

will this attract spiders?
Good question, I have spiders come to the light trap but not in large numbers. They could be attracted to the light or the amount of food that is attracted to the light. In the Arizona deserts I have had tarantulas come to the light trap and catch prey.

Don't really understand why you had to kill them, but still cool.
To properly identify and document the variability in a species it is important to have collected representatives within a collection for study and comparison. We also take images of different species in their habitats but still need to have preserved insects for closer analysis. Thanks for your comment, Hope you are enjoying the great outdoors.
Alcohol ruins lepidoptera fur
I would use a kill jar relaxer but find alcohol as a good substitute for my biology students. If done properly most people could not tell the difference between a specimen that was killed in alcohol, the freezer, or a kill jar. Happy collecting
