This is so damn good. Everything about this works. Aes's otherworldly imagery, intense introspection, and his physical delivery, which is so uniquely his own (but also reminiscent of early hip-hop). Meanwhile, the director's use of so many takes in a linear pairing with the song, and the simultaneously spooky and vintage aesthetics, are absolutely blowing my mind. F***ing cool. As a fan who didn't know about Aes until I was 42, I haven't been this excited for a new album in a LONG time.

The man’s unreal…..without doubt the only rapper I can think of that just gets better and better. 20 odd years of making my head spin. Every verse paints a thousand pictures. The bloke is a genius
"Walked away feeling like I never should have dressed myself". Been feeling this way since my last psychotic break. Love this shit so much. With his large vocabulary, I'm re-remebering so many words haha. Big up rhymesayers, slug is hype!
@@AIRTIME96 The lyrics are in the description. "sincerely I was never on the cutting edge, my hand was on the hilt, you’re free to build with the other end"
Okay, can we talk about how carrots onions and celery is the "holy trinity" in cuisine? And how he used toy story to describe how truth is singular but perception is fiction????? Can we please? I was wrong... What's a mirepoix i think🤔 and that is why i love him. He makes me think. I love the poetry.
The other day I met a guy at the local gas station that listened to AES, Walked in and heard Mystery Fish playing in the background. Instantly became friends
After around the 100th listen finally figured out "my hand was on the hilt, you're free to build with the other end" aes has been around for a long time, arguably one of the pioneers of the indie rap scene, one of the foundations for everyone who's come after, hence "youre free to build with the other end". Love how complex and metaphorical he is, always making confections even after years of listening to the same tracks. Keep up the amazing work Aes.
I always thought that this bar was a double metaphor, the ''you're free to build with the other end'' meaning facing the other end of the sword, aes' hand on the hilt being the contrast but also like a self refrence to the bar itself saying you're free to interpret the latter end of the bar how you want, I might be reaching but it would make sense imo, your interpretation makes perfect sense too so it could even be a triple lol, who knows but that's the beauty of aesop, everyone has different interpretations
Dr. 808 nope.. "3's company, appetite for destruction tee. Chunky monkey, funions; I can feel the cat judging me. Please, I've seen you eat your puke and drink the toilet water which completely renders your opinion void you little fucker."
Im not sure if Aesop's raps became clearer over the years or if i've just learned his style more but ti doesnt take me 4 listens to know what he's saying now.
I think aesops work is just as cryptic but comes more naturally, where as for works like bazooka tooth it's cryptic and you have to search for the meaning in it instead of being taught it
That song None Shall Pass is a a fuckin rubix cube. I've looked up the lyrics and each bar he's actually saying something dope behind the complexity. He's fuckin amazing
His way of thinking and creating such amazing songs should be talked about with poets after his passing for hundreds of years in the future maybe then he will get his recognition but for now he has his rightful place in underground hip hop where the last few real artists exist
@@DoctorWhoKage the line before it is "shriek into the void if in spite of your accomplishments" so I think Aes is inviting us to have an existential crisis with him
@@W7RSON that''s likely, god knows how long he ponders over those lyrics. I'm a Masters student in English Literature and I believe Aes is a genius level writer, not just in rap but in all forms of writing. He combines obscure references that can only be compared to a modern day "Waste Land" with rhyme schemes that are impeccable, then add social commentary and personal insight to that. It's insane. I wish to become a university lecturer in English lit and Aes will be on my module for sure. (If i misspelled anything in my comment, I have had a liberal amount of whisky sorry).
Boi that line “I’ve been ignored longer than you’ve been interested” fucking deep. Basically saying to his new fans after the impossible kid, “hey even though you like me I won’t be relevant in your friends conversations about rap music” he’s basically accepting his obscurity and making that his home. Aesop is next level guys.
Yo if Aes dropped a book of lyrics he will become one of the greatest authors that ever lived but... that's only from our perspective in another 100 years nobody will remember anything that humans have done...
Darren Graham that’s something that always perturbed me in college. Why are we so fixated on teaching people works of the past in literary classes when this is contemporary, applicable, relatable, and (in my opinion) showcases much more prowess and talent than these other aged manuscripts?
NAH thats the joke, people talk about aes like he got complex meanings or big messages, He doesn't, that's the point. the artist's of old don't have complex meanings either the four year undergrad program is a weeding out of the uninterested and wild. A great fantasy of mine in school (I never really had a good art class in college) was imagining that the original artist was there to critique the textbook interpretation of what they wrote. I legitimately don't think many artists have a big enough ego to really see all the symbolism that their fans do. Aes writes songs about being different and he does well because he commits to writing them in what I would consider a different language than traditional rap. His difference is honest and this honesty resonates with people. Even if the pugnacious mood his music has always had has only become mainstream in the last decade. My point is that aes is not successful because he is a real smart guy and his songs are not deep because there are complex messages, Aes is successful because he is smart enough not to be dishonest with what he thinks is cool and his songs are deep because he finds new ways to express feelings that other people can connect with.
Aesop Rock is amazinggg. Never seen him live, but he's the only artist I'd actually care to see live atm. But every time he's in Detroit, I just don't have the time and/or money. :(
"Sincerely I was never on the cutting edge- my hand was on the hilt- you’re free to build with the other end." He's saying it wasn't ever him that made his music good. He just laid ideas out in cryptic and wordy terms (his hand was just on the hilt, not showing the blade), then us as listeners built our own concepts and meaning around his vague words. At first I thought he was mocking us for enjoying his music so much even though he was never actually "cutting-edge," but I think he's more giving kudos to the listeners for being able to "see the blade" even when it wasn't fully shown to us, meaning we were able to see Aesop's value despite his cryptic and wordy (and truly poetic imo) lyrics.
I've listened to this song no less than 500 times and it only gets better. Crazy how this man can just set aside storytelling and narrative for a few minutes of fun with words and still shit on almost every other rapper. Best in the world.

“Come and send it with the cleverest to never stick the landing”
-Flamingo Pink
And now begins the lengthy and fascinating time of deciphering every line of a new Aesop Rock track.
The man’s unreal…..without doubt the only rapper I can think of that just gets better and better. 20 odd years of making my head spin. Every verse paints a thousand pictures. The bloke is a genius
He looks so stoned i love aesop rock he's my all time favorite
Favorite rapper of all time. Period. GOD TIER AESOP ROCK
"As your moment of self reflection is a moment for me too."
Hip-hop's Shakespeare, and the introspective introvert's introspective introvert.

concise, and well said
Can't introvertedly introspect an introspective introvert
Or something
Words simple things more complex than needed for the sake of entertainment? Yup, that’s Shakespeare for ya.
smoothcriminal, i'd say "Aesop Rock but it's verbose" but that's kind of like saying "Aesop Rock but its Aesop ROck"
lord jamar gonna be mad
Always excited to hear Aesop Rock's blessing us with more music. Keep up the good work dude!
Not even Aes himself could put into words how much I love him
LMFAO FO REAL
girl i feel you
I'm pretty sure he could.
He could and you wouldn't realize until 5 years later.
Are you starting to be part of the kinesis 😮
Dudes at the top of his game after 20 years. Unreal
"Walked away feeling like I never should have dressed myself". Been feeling this way since my last psychotic break. Love this shit so much. With his large vocabulary, I'm re-remebering so many words haha.
Big up rhymesayers, slug is hype!

Lookin and sounding sharp, Aes. Don't stop!
It's Aesop *shrugs*
"I've been ignored for longer than you've been interested." As he's casually flipping a cassette tape in his Walkman. GOAT
This man is the Sphinx of Hiphop, dropping riddles in every line.
Knock em’ out the box, Aes.
My day just got so much better. Thx!
AES! The singles you've been putting out since Impossible Kid are super nice. I fux wit chu, man.
Rhymesayers has the dopest lineup of MC's out there.
Lyrics so clear we tear
The hardest dad look in the game. H3 watch out, Aesop coming for the crown.
what kind of dad would aesop be?
I always thought he looked like Stanley Kubrick if he had gigantism.
@@dysperdotted The type to take you hiking in the woods and leave you there.
Lurking in the bushes.
The fact he is still making music is outstanding. Alien lyricism next level shit you cant touch that
I got the impossible kid pic tattooed on me next is the pic from “none shall pass”. Aesop is my hero
Still On Top, King Aesop!
Probably the greatest opening line ever!!!
Dr.
Zero Dark Thirty You're absolutely right... he "says just as much" while using less words... incredible.
I started with Bazooka Tooth in '03, and I've wondered the same thing as the years go on
I feel like he enunciates his longer lines a lot better now than back in the day with his New York drawl.
His way of thinking and creating such amazing songs should be talked about with poets after his passing for hundreds of years in the future maybe then he will get his recognition but for now he has his rightful place in underground hip hop where the last few real artists exist
Aes has had the best flow in the industry since he first hit the scene and yet somehow he's still consistently improving.
"You wake up feeling empty like hoodinis grave problably is" jesus christ
that was a fucking bar like damn
@@finnyp2055 nevermind bar, that was a fucking burn! 😅😂😂😂
@@DoctorWhoKage the line before it is "shriek into the void if in spite of your accomplishments" so I think Aes is inviting us to have an existential crisis with him
he always looks like he hasn't slept for 18 hours
You mean stoned as fuck?
He probably doesn't
@@W7RSON that''s likely, god knows how long he ponders over those lyrics. I'm a Masters student in English Literature and I believe Aes is a genius level writer, not just in rap but in all forms of writing. He combines obscure references that can only be compared to a modern day "Waste Land" with rhyme schemes that are impeccable, then add social commentary and personal insight to that. It's insane. I wish to become a university lecturer in English lit and Aes will be on my module for sure. (If i misspelled anything in my comment, I have had a liberal amount of whisky sorry).
my favorite kind of rapper, the one that would still be rapping in a nuclear wasteland to keep from going crazy
MUST NOT SLEEP
MUST WARN OTHERS
I love these aes songs that just go on wihout a chorus
Man, this is why i respect old people.
This is going to be on repeat for a while. Aes be the man.
Yo if Aes dropped a book of lyrics he will become one of the greatest authors that ever lived but... that's only from our perspective in another 100 years nobody will remember anything that humans have done...
You need a 4 year undergrad program to unpack this banger

Aesop is whis Lupe is beerus. My two fav mc's of all time.
"Sincerely I was never on the cutting edge- my hand was on the hilt- you’re free to build with the other end."
He's saying it wasn't ever him that made his music good.
Hes saying the ants did it! the ants! how is this hard to understand?
crazy analysis
I've listened to this song no less than 500 times and it only gets better. Crazy how this man can just set aside storytelling and narrative for a few minutes of fun with words and still shit on almost every other rapper. Best in the world.
me too. I even rebassed it to play on my stereo.
Please never stop making music Aes. Ever.
Most slept on lyricist. I'm glad I've been able to enjoy this.
