Why Fisker Can't Compete With Tesla

  • Fisker, the EV startup founded by renowned Danish car designer, Henrik Fisker, is struggling. The Fisker name became a cautionary tale for much of the automotive world after his first company, Fisker Automotive, ended in bankruptcy. Now, he is trying again, with a new company bearing an almost identical name and logo. The company and its founder are taking steps to strengthen the financials and reputation by selling cars through dealers, by licensing technology, and negotiating a potential investment from an unnamed large automaker. But so far, executive turnover, delivery bottlenecks, cash burn and other challenges have hampered the growth the EV maker was hoping for.

    I saw a video about the Pear. Ok under 30K so it is marketed as affordable EV. On the review I saw the extra complicated tailgate and front trunk. If they just made a normal front and rear trunk they would've saved even more money. A lot of EV companies don't seem to understand what they need to compete against. When I see a tail gate that disappears under the vehicle. First thing that comes to mind is how expensive is it going to be to fix it when it goes bad, because it will go bad.
    Make an EV that is simple, good range, good price, were people don't have to fear spending thousands of dollars if they get hit by shopping car. Make that car and it will sell fast.
    If first we have a reliable charging network that is affordable. I'll make a prediction on regards to that. By the time we have a reliable charging network it will cost as much if not more that using gas to charge your EV.

      Every single other EV didn't break 42k units sold for EV models. And frankly that's terrible for most of those. Especially the "cheaper" models with smaller profits.

    Honestly, I'm amazed Fisker has made it this far, simply because the bulk of the design, production and release work for the Ocean occurred during the pandemic and then a period of hyper inflation. Tesla wouldn't have gotten off the ground in that environment. I hope Fisker makes it.

      When Fisker needed to raise capital, every investor was literally throwing money after any EV start-up with ambitions of going public. When Tesla got started, the concept of a mass market EV manufacturer was considered a joke by most, and so they had to pull rabbits out of the hat to raise capital several times, sometimes days before bankruptcy. Tesla made a lot of mistakes in their earlier days, but they were also the first to walk their path. Today's start-ups have the advantage of looking at Tesla's mistakes with hindsight.

      @@Harakai100 Not sure that is true, though it fits Tesla's narrative. Tesla got enormous government support -- direct loans, huge rebates for production facilities. And there was a lot of support for them because they were the only ones; they had strong investment. Fisker has been living through Covid and post-Covid. Not an easy world, especially with the far-right political sentiment against EVs altogether and some states passing legislation directly hostile. Even Tesla -- the only established EV maker -- has been suffering through this period, particularly lately. I do agree Tesla had challenges too, but its timing -- being the first out the door for a product attractive to a certain segment of the population, coupled with political support and pretty darn good products -- definitely helped it.

      I do agree with your last sentence. EVs are far superior. However your first sentence is incorrect. For starters, Tesla Model Y is the best selling around the world, not just US, and Tesla sold more EVs worldwide than any other maker (no, BYD only outsold Tesla in Q4). The Fisker Ocean competes in price with the Model Y, not the BYDs. Tesla does not even make an EV in the majority of the BYD market, and the FIsker ain't in that category either. This is not me saying it, this is BYD themselves. By the way, BYD does not really make a profit on their EVs, so there's that. So title is correct.

In the report filed by Fisker Automotive with the NHTSA, the carmaker said some hose clamps were not properly positioned, which could allow a coolant leak and an electrical short could possibly occur if coolant enters the battery compartment, causing a thermal event within the battery, including a possible fire.[51] In May 2012 a Fisker Karma was involved in a home fire that also burnt two other cars in Fort Bend County, Texas. • @lifeinhd4053
      @lifeinhd4053 2 месяца назад +2

      It worked for Tesla because of their timing-- they were essentially the only game in town (excluding compliance cars like the Leaf) so they owned the market and could dictate prices. The same strategy is not working nowadays for Lucid, because the $100k EV luxury sedan segment is heavily saturated. Rivian is still an open question. They owned the lifestyle EV truck and (functional) 3-row SUV markets when they first came out, but quickly lost exclusivity for both of those and now must get their R2 (lower-priced offering) out ASAP to survive.
      All that to say, what worked for an EV startup in the recent past almost certainly won't work for an EV startup today. There's a reason so few new car companies are successful in modern times.

      @@GET2222Marques Nick picked the car. Most of his issues weren’t serious. And they informed him to wait until they released the new software update but he refused. That said I drive an EV (i4) so I appreciate the need for functionality first. Fisker needs to sort out the issues and improve his marketing, sales and service processes in order to survive.

    Because Fisker isnt a car company, they are designer company thats specialized in car, most of thier car are manufactured by magna, they had if any a little proprietary tech in their own car, also they cant lower their price as much as tesla because magna also need a profit building fisker's car.

    It looks so good and has some really unique innovations. I hope it perseveres and gets a high-quality EV out to the masses.

    The biggest drag on Fisker is the CEO and his reputation. They have good names behind the brand. They have an affordable, good-looking EV. The share price is also very low. Risky buy but may be a large return.

    All the fisher models are really good looking but I think they really need improvement in the software because is failing for now but hopefully they can fix this issue and be one of the best electric car companies
