Same, I heard his voice in my head my 2nd time trying Cinderella trail at Joaquin Miller Park when I only had to get off on the rock garden. I'll do it next time.
One aspect of hardtails that I think is worth adding is the genuine improvement in tire technology, notably width and tubeless. With today's tire pressures, a modern hardtail is possibly as "plush" as a short travel suspension from a decade ago.
I’m actually switching from a yeti sb5 to a “enduro hardtail”. I feel over biked for most of what I ride and I feel like trying something different after two years. The more modern geometry hardtails look super interesting and I can’t wait to get out on the trails on the new bike this weekend.
Got a Pivot 5.5 a couple months ago. Handles really well, takes almost anything and I’m 66. Started MBT just under 3 years ago with Specialized 29. Had to upgrade to 27.5 Pivot, been improving.
Been riding a canyon nerve for a long time now. 110mm rear and front, light and playful. It's like a playful less racy xc bike, without loosing the light agile feeling. Love it, and it's capable of a lot more than you'd think.
This is a great story - thanks for posting. It's great to see these options and to learn about XC as a category instead of what it was 20 years ago (XC was the whole industry. OK, maybe downhill also, but XC was really 85% of everything).

After 25 yrs of riding full suspension bikes, I went back to a hardtail, it's a 27.5 plus. I thoroughly enjoy the simplicity of a hardtail, but I do like the bit of comfort that the plus tires give. I’m all for the down country bikes! It’s a segment that I probably would have bought 2-3 years ago if it were around. Being from the Midwest, and with my riding style I don’t need a big burly bike for my trails.
I'm downsizing from a Scott Genius 920 (150mm) to the Spur and am REALLY looking forward to it! It's a gamble for me to make such a drastic switch but I'm currently riding my son's Giant Trance 2 (sort of down country 130mm/115mm) and I'm actually faster downhill on that bike than the Scott on my local trails! Thanks for the review!

But ive been thinking a lot about getting a full suspension with 120mm front and rear nowadays... Ive lost that desire for racing and being the best, just wanna have fun nowadays, find places and share moments with friends while riding. (maybe just getting old)
Nice vid. It's hard to beat xc bikes nothing better than riding out of your own home. You can literally ride anything on an xc bike, trails get harder yes, but your handling improves in the long run. Xc bikes are the perfect do it all bikes, forget however much the industry pushes gravel bikes, you just cant ride trails on them.
What about the Specialized Epic Evo with a 50mm Stem and 780mm carbon bars (35mm riser) like what you may see on a trail bike? Recommendations for bikepacking with these "Down Country" bikes?

I started MTB in 1996. Went from hardtails to full suspension and everything in between. I find myself riding hardtails more now. It’s just so light and connected. All trails in the bay area can be enjoyed on a ht. The bike I own that gets ridden most now is a single speed rigid 27.5!
I used to own a Rocky Mountain Growler with 130mm up front and she would take anything I threw at it, making everything fun or gnarly Hardtails are fun and I believe everyone should have one but since my hardtail got stolen I got a 160/160 enduro sled and yes it’s fast on the decent and it can make it up almost any climb but a hardtail just takes it back to a simpler time where is just you and the trail in front nothing else. I do miss my hardtail and I do hope to get another in the future but for now I can only afford one bike, one bike that has to take on the bike park, north shore, and all the local XC trails
The biggest travelbike I have has a 130 mm up front and 120mm in the rear, that's plenty for where I live built it myself too, do need to change the brakepads to fit my riding better, prefer the imediat resin pad bite
Hey man I’m looking at riding an xc mtn bike but am a little iffy on if I’m going to like it. Do you take your xc bike out a lot? I also am riding trails in the bay area
Hi friend as XC racer HT IS GREAT for purely XC, Like Early Days Remember? with the new geometry HTs really go really fast, all now is depending of the local trails, An HT with the correct set up you can fly.
Nice video and great topic, at least right now that is. I always prefer the buy cheap and upgrade over time method personally. Maybe one of these days we will see what all the fuss is about with a nice bike out of the box lol. Thanks for the video.🚵♂️👍
MTB Savant, I am riding a similar combo right now. I also have a Viathon M.1 (GX version) but paired with an Evil Following. The Evil Following is wanting me to get about 5 pounds lighter for my next bike. The claimed weights for the transition spur don't seem correct given their frame weight, can you comment on that? There is something about the M.1 that is just so fun, they did a great job with that bike. I added a dropper post.... with a dropper and a 120 mm fork it can handle just about anything. Based on my experience with the M.1 and Evil Following I think my next bike will be the 2021 Epic EVO. Any other ideas for a 24-25 pound full suspension bike with 120 up front and 100-120 in the rear?
The complete bike weights listed on their site are pretty accurate. I weigh'd mine at 24.8 for a medium X01 with a few tweaks - wider carbon wheels, stem and saddle.
MTB Savant thanks for the info, at a 5 lb frame weight that didn’t seem possible....they spec’d it well to get to 24.8 lbs. the new EVO frame is 3 lbs. I feel like that's the sweet spot.... a 24-25 pound full suspension... it's definitely going to the year of the capable "XC" bike.
I think it depends on the trails you have by your house. I live in SoCal and have some steep tech trails up the street. Was riding Santa Cruz Tallboy but recently switched to Hightower. I descend a lot better on Hightower. Is Hightower considered a low travel 29ner? 135/140
I started out with a 120/120 light trail bike five years ago. I had major issues with the descending ability. As a result, I wanted nothing more than a bike with more travel. Now that I have bikes with more travel, I’m thinking of going with bikes with less traveled. However, I rethought my desire and, honestly, I see no reason to go to a bike with less travel. It’s rare for me to do an all-XC trail and rowdy trails are MUCH more fun. So what’s the point in a shorter-travel bike?
I think that makes sense if you live somewhere that actually has mountains. Here in north Texas and many other areas in the south(and Midwest) it makes no sense to get anything with over 130mm of travel. We have almost exclusively flat XC style trails since we have no elevation.
@@Jon-nz3dm I largely agree. There are only a small handful of trails here in OK that I would prefer to ride my full suspension on. 99% of the time, I am on one of my hard tails. My full suspension bike is by far my least ridden and it's a trail bike, not an enduro.

I'm CONVINCED that tights will make me faster. But really what will happen is I'll make a video that just has a bunch of jokes about my bulge. You know it. I know it. So I've held off for now. You're crushing it man! So awesome.
Man they're both so good. The Spur has a LOT of that same spirit wrapped in a modern package. Nothing beats that SB100 locked in pedaling performance tho
I have been on an SB100 for two years. The general pedaling and feel of the bike and suspension is awesome. I did a short test ride of the Spur yesterday. It’s a very nice bike-but it didn’t make me order one. All of these new short bikes are awesome-it’s hard to go wrong. Try to ride them and prioritize what you want on the build. I.e. SID120/SC34 or Pike/34? 2/4 piston brakes? Wheels and tires? Sounds stupid, but the Spur XO1 kit for 6k is pretty cool...
there is no way I could ride that on a hardtail with my back, neck problems. but for city ridding the xc bike would be nice, I don't have a new hardtail for that use yet. probably best if I build up one from parts I have and some second hand parts.
well those who can only afford one bike would surely get an enduro bike because you never know when you have that bike trip that pushes you and your bike to the limit
Personally, I feel the industry takes advantage of what's popular at the time and overcharges for it. I'm not against companies making money, but 10k for a 120mm travel 29er? Seems excessive. I wish brands focused on value for dollar a bit more.
While 10K is a lot. You're getting the absolute pinnacle of bikes that WC riders use. For comparison a stock 450SX (motocross) bike costs about 10k, but a factory pro's bike cost $150-200k !!
I might be a while before Down country is translated to Norwegian.😀 downhill bike is Utfor sykkel or downhill sykkel XC bike is XC sykkel trail bike is stisykkel I guess it has to stay Down country sykkel? 😀at least that will make some sense I guess, maybe DC sykkel? might be confusing if they get to Washinggton DC so many terms that don't halve a Norwegian version yet. stroke when it comes to suspension for example. and some words will be weird if an English speaker reads it like bak demper, which is rear damper translated back to English but it means rear shock.
Every time I'm riding now, your mantra "those trails don't get easier, you get better" goes through my head whenever I encounter a tough section lol 🤘

😂 “ I know you have them”
lol
bigger is not always better! :)
Werd
Can you do another Walmart bike
I just did lol.
How the hell is a Mtb lighter than a bmx bike
Crosscountry is more beautiful. Its nice to have a super light bike, 10kg or 14kg makes a huge difference. Also less awkward to ride on the street.
Totally agree!
there is no way I could ride that on a hardtail with my back, neck problems. but for city ridding the xc bike would be nice, I don't have a new hardtail for that use yet. probably best if I build up one from parts I have and some second hand parts.
In Brazil we have much more cross country bikes than trail or enduro bikes.
You guys are doing it right
How many bikes do you have?
Are you going do a giveaway?
Hehe
Joaquin Miller park is hella nuce
LAKE CHABOT BIKE LOOP!!!
Gotta represent the Valley of the Castro!
I just recently got a ibis Ripmo af with a jade x coil coming from a 650b bike I though it pedaled like an ebike.
The bikes are cool, but as long as Spandex still exists the answer is No. 😆
Haha. Hard to argue with that
well those who can only afford one bike would surely get an enduro bike because you never know when you have that bike trip that pushes you and your bike to the limit
Santa Cruz #HARDBALL✊🏻🥜🇺🇸
Great bike!
🤙🏻😎
A huffy scout project
Hmmm
Personally, I feel the industry takes advantage of what's popular at the time and overcharges for it. I'm not against companies making money, but 10k for a 120mm travel 29er? Seems excessive. I wish brands focused on value for dollar a bit more.
While 10K is a lot. You're getting the absolute pinnacle of bikes that WC riders use. For comparison a stock 450SX (motocross) bike costs about 10k, but a factory pro's bike cost $150-200k !!
I might be a while before Down country is translated to Norwegian.😀
downhill bike is Utfor sykkel or downhill sykkel
XC bike is XC sykkel
trail bike is stisykkel
I guess it has to stay Down country sykkel? 😀at least that will make some sense I guess, maybe DC sykkel? might be confusing if they get to Washinggton DC
so many terms that don't halve a Norwegian version yet.
stroke when it comes to suspension for example.
and some words will be weird if an English speaker reads it like bak demper, which is rear damper translated back to English but it means rear shock.
great vid tho!
Thnx!
I only got a Chameleon, and I'm still over biked
Keep on riding!
oakland hills !!!!!
#downcountry bikes are what most people need 😂
Very happy Ibis Ripley V4 owner here 😁😁

MTB Savant thanks
You never go full XC 🤣
lol!
Best vids ever! Please notice me and respond. I also live near Jauqin Miller park in oaklnad
Hi Neighbor. See you out there
Nope. Everyone will be back to over biking soon enough.
These kids will never understand!
Let's start calling them "light trail" -- 'downcountry' is nearly meaningless market-speak.
Never liked the you know what term ;)
nope, still buying a super enduro bike, even the easiest trails here are too harsh for XC bikes.
26 is cool again! Not XC
lol!
nah bruh
lol
Nooooooo!!!!!!!!
Hehe
