For me Elgin, along with Hamilton are only interesting when they are full American made. These later Swiss made watches in my experience are no where near the quality of the American made, American movement watches which offer far superior movements than the more prosaic Swiss movements of the time. Unless it’s a Chronograph I would pay no more than $300-$750 for a Swiss made Elgin such as this, they are pretty ordinary compared to the all American made ones. I own several American made Elgin’s and Hamilton’s and it takes seconds in the hand to see how superior the American made ones are to the Swiss.
Don’t fall into the trap that if it says Swiss on the dial it must be the best, the Swiss in the golden age made more than their fair share of base metal cased basic movement dogs! To spend over $750 on an Elgin it should be a superior watch made in the US otherwise as a long term collector of the brand I have to say, your paying a pretty price for the hype train dealers want you on so they can make a quick buck!
As an Elgin collector if you want a real gem of a watch that is getting rarer to find and is worth the higher asking price try to find an American movement BW Raymond signed Elgin railroad wrist watch! The quality is incredible! Oh, an my avatar picture is a close up of a BW Raymond Elgin pocket watch movement, it will give you an idea of the quality of their American made movements. I picked my 1921 example up serviced for under CAD$300 a few years ago before dealers started to hype them!
