Because Carlisle also seemed to gather individuals with incredible gifts. It's no wonder; especially in BD with the addition of Kate, Zafrina, Benjamin to their ranks even if only temporarily. It must have seemed like Carlisle were out to gather a force strong enough to challenge them in time.
The Volturi weren't wary of the Werewolves pack. Because Werewolves would kill them all if Bella were to transform into a Werewolf and that would be better than her dying.

Is Edward a better fighter in the books? I would've guessed that Edward would've be an exceptional fighter considering he can read minds and anticipate his opponent's moves, especially since thoughts are instantaneous.
Thouts are slow, they need to arise and you need to become aware of them then you can react. SLOW, Knowing (training of body) is instantenious. Thats why you train and not read.

Except if you look at it from an actual tactical and smart move, he did the right thing by not turning her there in then. He would have forced her into loyalty which would have brought retaliation from Edward and the Cullens. He’s a vampire he has all the time in the world to get her to join him willingly and if Bella does it could mean her bringing Edward and Alice along with her which in my case is the smarter move then forcing her to join.
