I have to agree, I think the genius of the music behind inxs can get a bit overlooked at times, perhaps. To be fair though, Michael wasn't just a pretty boy instant pop singer. He did his time running through the pub trenches with the others, and the lad could sing, pretty damn well too.

and this song was written after he went to my fathers at 3am near Tweed. They had just done a gig at Kunghur and were looking for greenery. My dads friends response to his unexpected arrival was 'shove it brother, just keep walking'.. my dad went on to buy property there and is why I'm from Nimbin. Dad died in my arms near 2 years ago.. to add to this my aunty cremated him.. as she owned the funeral parlour .. I recently paid for Michael's signature..

I lived in Sydney in '78 to '80, and it was at the time some real cool shit was going on over there. Streets would have flyers of local bands playing around town (Midnight Oil, INXS, AC/DC, The Angels, Cold Chisel, etc). Such a vibrant live music scene. It was insane. However, Sydney wasn't the city that it is today, and the gritty car park shot at the end of this video teleports me back to the city of broken bottles
, bricks and dark street corners, fast car driving, public transits... I can even smell late 70's Sydney just looking at the last shot of this video.

If a band simply changes its name it's still the same band - usually it is done for either commercial reasons (as in this case) or because there is another band elsewhere with the same name. They passed through several genres of music, adapted to and conquered all of them. Punk, New Wave, Rock n Roll, Blues etc. The insteument work byvall band mwmbers is phenomenal, some of the best riffs, grooves, jazz, work youre ever likely to hear, plus they achieved longevity. Everyone likes to talk about Rolling Stones, but they were only a rock n roll band. INXS was everything accordijg to the times they were in. At the very top of the best bands in history list.

I have been a huge fan of INXS since 1982 - what a bloody epic live show they put on! (For me it was at Brandeis University, outside Boston, I think early 1983) - but somehow I’m seeing this video, and hearing the song, for the first time ever now, in August 2020. They are so young and adorable... kind of their authentic selves but as if they’re trying to add in a dash of Devo and The Talking Heads. If so I agree 100% with their taste in music. 🙂 In 1980 there was still so much jaw-dropping, mind-blowing music to come from INXS and no hint of the eventual tragedy. Ah, to be a teen in the 80s was bliss!

The last shot of the car park with all those old model cars captures a little piece of Sydney in 1980. It wasn't the polished city like today. It was quite gritty, Just watch other vids of Sydney from this period and you get the same feel. Young people needed local bands at that time, because even if you got young bands like B-52s and Talking Heads touring here, there was still this time and space where you're waiting for some overseas New Wave band to bother taking a trip here.
This stage of INXS is an concoction of local Aussie bands like The Sports, Flowers (aka Icehouse), Mi-Sex, and Matt Finish. While they were a unique band, they were taking notes from others and turning it into a commercially viable thing. The Middle Aged ruled the Australian roost at the time. There was very little youth in the mainstream at the time. Even the 'hip' people like Molly Meldrum and Donnie Sutherland had a more 'old bloke' thing about them. As for AC/DC, they were international by that stage, so forget it.
Bands like INXS, Midnight Oil, Flowers, Mi-Sex, Radiators, were needed in Aus. in 79/80, Incidentally, INXS first album was released in Europe by Mercury Records along with singles 'Simple Simon' and 'Just Keep Walking' in 1980, and flopped upon initial release.

The Par-T-One tune "I'm so crazy," brought me here. I wasn't able to find which INXS tune they had sampled until now.

Yes, that 2001 dance record, seem to remember that one, not the original.
