  • This week's episode sees me take a rather long walk around the perimeter of the former RAF Coltishall site in Norfolk.
This base is full of history and amazing things to see and I hope that this vlog shows you some of the amazing history that is left.
This was filmed over a 5 hr walk that I organised as part of the Heritage Open days in September, there will also be more opportunities to come along on one of these sessions in the not so distant future.

Was at Coltishall as a young child 1972 - 74. Remember sitting at a gate at the end of the runway listening to the Lightning opening its engine, had to put my hands over my ears, it was so loud but impressive. I remember the NAAFI, the junior school that I attended and poignantly the swimming pool where I learned to swim. The RAF fun day was great at Coltishall, vividly remember the end race where there was lots of cold curry and smoke flares, great fun. As an RAF child, Coltishall was a great camp, great fun.

As an air cadet in the late 60's I was lucky enough to have a flight in a Chipmunk aircraft. Flying over the north sea, I asked the pilot to put the aircraft into a dive, to experience G force. He was rather surprised, at my request but went ahead. My father was in the Lancasters; I had listened to his stories. Despite feeling nauseous it was an incredible and unforgettable experience.

I used to be based there. It was a brilliant RAF camp until it closed. I enjoyed my time there.

I was there for two weeks with the Air Cadets in around 1976. Lightnings were in operation each day at that time as it was a strike station and you could hear their engines being wound up, tested etc by the engineers from 6am onwards before the days flying commenced. Then during training on the base training areas it was great to see these things taking off and landing all day not far away; the sheer power, noise and the way they just pulled straight up after take off and disappeared into the cloud in no time. We also went to the bomb store facility which was separate and highly secure from the main base and were shown the firestreak and other munitions which could be employed, also the operation of the firestreak missile in the facility where they armed and maintained them; I seem to recall that the missiles had a pointed glass or perspex head when the red cover was removed with a 'tracking' antenna or device inside it. Also luckily for us it was then the home of the Battle of Britain Memorial flight and I have our Squadron photograph somewhere of us all lined up in front of a Spitfire. So yes those were good days; exciting days for young lads with a thirst for action and the military etc. But I am just so glad to have seen the lightning perform in real, in operations each day of that two weeks; believe me they were some awesome power machines!

Served at Coltishall 1972-77, including the BBMF, went for a walk around the place last week. There is a Cafe at the end of 1 hangar, and a nice little museum in the old guardroom and police flight ( open Thursdays and Sundays during the summer). many happy memories of the place, sad to see some of it rundown, but industry is slowly moving into various buildings.
