My first one had locking problems too. The liner would flip so far off center that it was almost impossible to close it without jamming a car key in there to break it lose! And, the locks have failed. Too much blade for that flimsy lock (you were right). You can't keep "hard flicking" that knife, and not expect to have problems. I bought two right away cause I liked them. Now, one's in my back pack, the other in my car. Light duty only.
Okay, I just got one, and the liner lock on mine is pretty much on center. No matter if I open it slow, or quick. Locks up tight. So you might have gotten a bad one. The only reason I bought one, is for self defense. Now the Rajah 2 XL which I also bought, its heavy duty enough to do camp tasks, even light duty brush clearing. Those are not thumb studs, whether your using the big one or little one. Those are Stop Pins. If you look at the front of the handle, there are recessed area's for those pins to rest against. So don't dish the knife. You should have sent it back to Cold Steel.
I think they fixed the slow opening lockup issue you demonstrated in the video on the newer ones. I just opened mine as slow as possible and the liner snapped hard to about 50% under the blade. Maybe they saw your video lol.
Same here, got a medium and a large, both perfect lockup. In comparison I bought a USA made Kershaw Link, liner lock barely engaged, had to modify to make it lock properly. Tsk tsk
@@utrak not sure whats wrong with USA made kershaw knives, every one that I bought I’ve had to do work on to get it functioning normally. I don’t think I’ve had a problem with any of their china knives though. USA qc needs serious work.
I've only had my Luzon XL for about a week, and it locks up tight, whether I open it slow or fast. I just put it to the est, but opening the knife, and thwacking the spine side on a piece of wood for 24 whacks, and not soft one either. And the lock did not move. So I think he just got a bad knife.
Mine large luzon doesn't have that issue with the linear lock, maybe if you contact cold steel they will fix it or exchange it.Got it for 35.36 new/shipped. Great deal for what it is.
i love the fact the linerlock its easy to press. before the Luzon Large i bought a TiLite6. i could barrely close it with 2 hands. it was too recessed and slippery. they added knurling on the side you dont touch! also the access semi-circle hole in the handle was too little. i returned that TiLite. and thats why i enjoy this easy to maneuver Luzon. i oiled the safety, the outer portion and the inside thing, its work smooth. thanks for the review, it helped me to decide.
I like mine , it’s not a bushcraft knife , but a good defense knife , easier to conceal then a fixed blade but it’ll scare the shit out of the bad guys ,that all I really want to do , but it’ll slice and dice nicely
I just got one yesterday for 80$CAD(yeah lol inflation and Canadian dollar exchange rate is a mf) but they fixed the issue, I opened it up the same way on the table, and even slower than you did, and the lock engaged immediately, tried it again but while holding it, engaged immediately, so maybe you got a faulty model or they fixed it sometime since this video, thank you tho for making sure, they could have been the ones to see this exact vid and fixed it so thank you for your contribution
Im my case, it is different. I can open it gently and slowly as much as I want, it locks perfectly. But if I do ooening with a wrist, I will need screw driver to unlock my liner lock so I can close it. It is not s big problem to me, just saying. I have several knives with triad lock, each works like a dream. So I collect them, use them, and this large Luzon I bought simply for having a flipper so it is ok for me to open it with a flip, not with a wrist. Very fun and practical pocket knife to have.
I was deciding between the xl Luzon or X-Large counterpoint. I went with the counter point because I don’t like a liner lock on a blade that big. The counter point is a tad smaller, but it’s great. The only down side is the lock would get stuck, when flicked really hard. I noticed since I have been playing with it, I does not do that anymore. If you do not mind a dagger blade, get the counter point xl. Better steal and a tri ad lock, for not much h more in price.
I’ve got them both, I love the XL counterpoint fantastic Nathan built like a tank but this night for what you pay for. It is very solid for a liner lock. I have no problems with it it’s not meant for a real hard use but really no folder is
Thanks for your review! I got my large Luzon today, and I don't have the issue like yours, linerlock sitting right in the middle and easy enough to push to unlock. Such a great knife! I don't intend to edc this one though.

Great knife. Also people say you can't best a fixed knife for strength, well obviously in most cases yes. However interestingly take a look at “Joe e” who year to destruction, he put the cold steel 4 max Scout through it's paces (a folder) and as far as I'm aware it's the only knife that has remained whole after his test is completed.
I just got the XL and took it out back to do some test cuts on some free hanging cardboard sheets. Beautiful long slices...... but the liner lock on its own failed after a quick but not particularly strong slash through cardboard. I noticed and stopped my hand in such a way the blade didn't close on my unprotected fingers. I *thought* the secondary safety wouldn't be necessary for slashing cardboard sheets, more fool me. Incredibly dangerous. Real shame.
Thanks for posting this. I think I will pass on this one, and stay with the triad lock models. I was considering this since it's easy to close one handed, and a little bigger than the voyager XL.
Don't believe this guy. The liner lock works just fine, and the safety clicks when used for a solid lock up. I've had mine for about a year. I use it to break down Amazon boxes, cut cordage, and food prep, and the lock has never failed or even slipped. I think this guy just got a bad one. Why he didn't send it back is beyond me. Oh, and said knife, is for Self Defense, Lynn Thompson even said so.
So if you pull it out to play with it, some field craft work, the actual slide lock holds right? I just bought one of these for fun. 40 bucks is a cheap price for a knife this big and cool looking. I mean for me, my all time favorite self defense knife is my OTFs
I've had mine for about a year. Locks up nice and the Safety works great. Just don't use it for heavy duty cutting. Medium to light duty cutting /knife work, and your golden. And yes, it is primarily a self defense knife.
If you get a cold steel. Triad lock knife it will NOT fail I’ve split thick wood and beat my cold steel triad locking knifes hard and they haven’t failed yet
It does look like a 119 clone blade. Less than half liner locks work as intended and even some that work can fail after hard use. I have a Boker Kwaiken - liner lock worked, then every screw loosened, liner went to crap. I had to disassemble, bend everything back to where it should be, reassembled with blue loctite just so everything worked smooth. Kwaiken = $125. CRKT "LL" Gambler(?) folder was crap out of the box. Sent back to the factory and came back twice as crappy. Designed defective out of the box. Sorry to hear about the design quality of the Luzon. Great in concept - poor execution. Kershaw liner locks have NEVER failed me.

Being a big fan of Cold Steel products, I just purchased one of the small Luzons last week to try out. It's already been returned. Your video shows you disengaging the liner lock on the small Luzon with your thumb. This is how I expected it to work. But when I started working with it, I discovered that I couldn't close the blade with my thumb. No amount of manipulation using my thumb would close the knife. Eventually, I realized that I had to hold the knife in my left hand and use my right index finger to press the liner lock at the very tip end of the gimping. That would provide just enough movement of the lock to allow me to close the blade. Unacceptable. Based on your experiences, I suspect the Luzons aren't quite ready for prime time. It seems like they really need a different locking mechanism.
