- Well, you had me at the Wrecking Crew.... AND THEN YOU KEPT ME WITH HER. What a voice and what a talent. This is my first ever listen to Joan, and I am captivated beyond belief already. This was honestly incredible. Bob's muse... I see why.

Utterly spellbinding... and hollow at the same time. What a mood this piece strikes in you... very moving. If you have any other tracks by her I should check out, leave em here! I am so down to hear more.
"Swing Low Sweet Chariot" at Woodstock
"Love is just a four letter word", which is actually a Dylan song.
Sweet Sir Galahad
In the quiet Morning
In the quiet morning was about the death of Janis Joplin.
Song never fails to give me goosebumps. Her voice, that guitar, but mostly her "lousy poetry" which is close to perfect.
She says Dylan claims her poetry was lousy.
Joan was another unique, legendary, folk singer, such an integral part of the 60’s and 70’s cultural tsunami taking place.
She called him out honestly and you can still hear the love . If he wasn’t nostalgic- why did he call? Damn those young tough boys who needed the women in their lives but always pretended they didn’t. Ah youth
She expressed bitterness so beautifully. You were always so good with words and keeping things vague.
JB is probably the person I most admire, not just her music but because of her courage and humanity.
For sure. I love her song, “It’s the 33rd of August” from her Blessed Are album. An amazing album. It would be worth playing the whole Blessed Are album. Magic
Joan sounded like Joan, an "achingly pure soprano." She wasn't known for her songwriting but this was the exception. She walked the walk, devoting enormous energy to civil rights and especially antiwar activity. She once said of the corporate/political establishment "They are slicing our balls off." And she said it with the voice of an angel
I disagree. Her songwriting was amazing. She put poetry to music. The entire Blessed Are album was a haunting, stunning work of art.
@@tragichollywoodonthetown6269 She wrote some good songs, although she did mostly covers, but I said she wasn't KNOWN as a songwriter but as a folk singer with an angelic voice who took a courageous stand on issues of social injustice. When you mention Joan Baez people don't say "Oh, you mean the songwriter from the 60's?"
Not a soprano, but an alto.
@@rabbitfishtv Whatever. Almost all stories about Joan describe her "sweeping soprano", "incomparable supple soprano", "icy soprano", etc. My reference to "achingly pure" was from a music critic whose name is long forgotten. But thanks for setting me straight. With my limited musical knowledge I might have described her voice as baritone
Hi, your next JB song should be 'Deportees' one of her best! BTW, love your channel!
Judy Collins
In my opinion this is one of the top 100 songs of all time. Musically, the melody is classic and the guitar playing exceptional. Her voice is powerful and emotional and the lyrics are haunting. Simply fabulous.
Agree
Joan Baez has such a beautiful voice. More Joan Baez songs please.
OMG Cora!! Have you heard if Lee is being harassed by the copyright bullies again?? I just hope he's ok health wise!! I know Cheyenne was not well too!
Hope they're good! 🙏❤
@@marthag9321 I think his online problems are solved, but he's been suffering with a toothache this weekend. Hope he gets to the dentist to get it fixed.
@@corawheeler9355Oh, thank you Cora! He must have a fear of dentists!! But, you're right, I hope he addresses it this time!! That's miserable!! 🦷 Pain!! ☹️
Dont sell her short. That opening guitar was all Joan. Very under rated guitar player
Mesmerizing. A from the depths-of-your-soul song. Sung beautifully.
Bless you Joan for this wonderful song and many thanks
My poetry was lousy you said, well, eat this!
I loved Joan and her sister Mimi performing together
One of the few perfect songs ever made!
That look on your face when the vocal came in; who wouldn't fall in love with that voice? 😍
❤❤what a voice, I believe she wrote this for Bob Dylan! She was probably the best thing "that he didn't realize he had" 😢
I love her version of Where Have All the Flowers Gone🌺
She’s still in love with him to this day.
@reneezie 💔😢💔 so sad!
In interviews now you can tell she cares for him still pure one doesn't leave their heart, sweet Joan
Loved it the first time I heard it. Bought the single, and taught myself to play it on my guitar. Next try "Love is just a 4-letter word."
Here’s another artist I haven’t heard anything about in a long, long time. What a lovely voice what a great singer. I can’t wait to watch this and your reaction.
Joan Baez was huge. Two really good albums David’s Album, titled after her then husband who I believe was in prison for avoiding the draft and protesting the Vietnam War and Blessed Are roughly 1970
You bet! Joan was POWERFUL.......she represented our generation in reflecting the turbulence. Her voice was a gift of the angels. So glad you appreciated this, Lee.
I was privileged to see Joan with the Indigo Girls in the 90's.
She is phenomenal live. Her voice is flawless. Her spirit is beautiful. No words to describe what I saw/heard.
PS. I'm sorry you're having a rough go. Hang in there! We love you and enjoy your presence in our lives! ✌️♥️
Melancholy is the mood that comes to mind when listening to this song.
Loved this the first time I heard it. Joan appeared at Woodstock with a memorable performance of “Joe Hill”. Such a beautiful voice, not something Dylan could match.
She also does a great Dylan impression.
I should add that Joan has stayed true to her anti-war, civil rights roots.
"Love is just a 4-letter Word "
"The Night they Drove Old Dixie Dow"
Joan Baez sounds like Joan Baez. A capella "Amazing Grace."
There's a video of her singing this with scrolling pictures of she & Bob Dylan. It's obvious she adored him.
Beautiful song
Bob is the love of her life no matter...No one would write this song and still not love him.
We all do🔥
Beautiful performance. I have to recommend the Judas Priest cover too, though - totally different feel and mood, but just as good in my opinion. The live version on their channel is from their famous "Unleashed in the East" album, which is superb. Take care of yourself.
Joan has a voice all her own and a fearless activist
One of the most beautiful songs ever written created by the best of the best ❤
Baez did a great song called Turquoise written for her by Donovan. Her voice was never better and the musical arrangement is stunning.
Her version of Turquoise is lovely.
This is the 5th time listening 🎧. Just caught your down on yourself, this song would do it if over a past love.
Your really quite wonderful. Thank you for bringing us Joan
Love this one by Joan, such a special voice. She's worth a deep dive. Many disliked her for her politics, but those were the times in which we lived. Great reaction, L33. I enjoyed the surprise on your face. Hope things turn around for you as you are deserving of the best. Peace.
Another good song of her’s is from the Album and is the song title of Where are you now my son… chills!!! It gives the listener a perspective of the war in Vietnam I had not heard. I grew up with all two Uncles who served as Marines in Vietnam as well as remember growing up watching Cronkite on TV with the latest casualty count.
Oh wow, the opening guitar reminded me Randy on diary of a madman.❤
So beautiful. I love that John Lennon-level honesty.
Pure and raw ❤
The main guitar work was done by Joan, I believe; as she IS a very good guitar player (as Dylan has noted), and I have seen Joan playing the song live (and unaccompanied).
Wonderful insightful reaction
there are manyvideos of them singing together. Especially on the concert film Hard Rain, the film of Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review, in the 1977w
Joan was established in the folk community when they got together. Bob was the newcomer. You can see their relationship becoming strained in the 1967 movie/documentary, Don't Look Back, which documents Bob's tour of England a year or two earlier. I highly recommend the movie. Their relationship ended as Bob became famous. Joan has said that Bob may have left all prior relationships as fame came along.
Bob wrote a response called Oh Sister on the Desire album. Joan, not pleased with the sister reference, wrote a response called Oh Brother.
She did a double album of Dylan covers called “Any Day Now” in 1968 👍
Chills. Been a long time since i last heard this
Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer is a classic, too,and Jesse. She does a nice version of Where Have All the Flowers Gone,as well.
Jackson Browne & Joan Baez - Before The Deluge (Live)
Thanks for doing this, Lee. This could be the first time I heard the original in its entirety, very familiar with the Judas Priest cover. Beautiful song, Baez has an amazing voice. Be well.
Hang in there. Keep one foot stepping in front of the other and stay focused on your goals.
AMAZING voice. And very interesting guitar player
A few suggestions: Love Is Just A Four Letter Word (written but never recorded by Dylan), All My Trials, The Ballad of Joe Hill, Sir Galahad, Silver Dagger, Donna Donna, ... She also did an amazing cover of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down by the Band. She did like 30 Dylan covers, but the most interesting one is her version of Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts. For 2 reasons: it has an extra verse, and also, Joan is probably Lily.
By the way, Dylan wrote Oh Sister as a response to this song. To which she responded with the song Oh Brother.
Yes Love Is Just A Four Letter Word is a great song that Dylan never recorded maybe because he knew Joan's version was definitive.
Her pure voice is exemplified in some of her older folk songs such as Silver Dagger and Stewball and the others you mentioned.
I actually bought this album on the strength of this one song. There were some other decent cuts on it, but this was by far the best
Beautiful song🎉
Love this whole album, Blessed Are, as well and From Every Stage - check out Amazing Grace from the album "From Every Stage" - you'll never hear a better version . . . it's amazing. This song is about Dylan, they were lovers at one time. She's wonderful, glad you found her.
Suite Judy Blue Eyes - is Judy Collins
She sounds like Judy Collins both from the same time.
Great song!!! Her cover of Jackson Brown’s “Fountain of Sorrow” from the same album, is pretty great
She was actually more famous than he was at the beginning. Then of course his star eclipsed hers as well as everyone else's.
She does a duet with Joni Mitchel . Her album lGulf Winds is mostly improv
The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down
in the quiet morning
I haven't listened to that song in 50 years. It still got to me. Funny - when I think of Joan Baez the first thing that comes to mind is the spoof song National Lampoon did - " Pull the triggers (expletive deleted) they're just across the bay"
Really lovely and poignant. Thanks!!
Lee, can you imagine Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and Judy Collins-- all singing their own songs and voices like heaven during the the same 70s? Oh yeah😂 who is Judy Collins( I don't think you have listened to her yet?) Maybe you have. This lady Joan Baez reminds me of Joni Mitchell /Just style. Both beautiful angel voices.
Ten years after they broke up she was still writing songs about Dylan
You should this entire album a listen. It's great.
a small note - a year after this was released. Bob went on an extended tour - 'rolling thunder ' several other 'stars' were on it including Joni Mitchell , and Joan. She was famous before Dylan , cover of time magazine I think before She was 20. classic old Irish / English folk stuff . oh, a really fine guitar player as well.
major mistake - WHOEVER -shoulda picked the video pictorial version , BUT if Ya don't know about it that's that.
of course beside the music She was maybe more famous for social outlook, starting I guess in high school protesting the good 'ole. ' quick here come the nukes, duck under yer desks' nonsense. I'm old, I did that. marching with M. L. King putting Her life on the line. etc etc.
Check out the movie A Complete Unknown about Bob Dylan's beginnings in the folk scene and their relationship--a good movie and great music.
Listen to Babe I’m Going to Leave You from In Concert.
Where Led Zeppelin procured their version on the first album.
❤🎉😊
Judy Collins is who you were thinking about.
More recently she did "My president sang Amazing Grace" It's a gem about when President Obama sang at the funeral for those killed in the Charleston Massacre. If you react to it you may want to include the clip of Obama from the funeral.
Joan, Emmielou, Joni persevered. Judy Collins might be who you are thinking of.
Check out Judas Priests' cover of this fantastic song,....obviously completely different to this gem,but great nonetheless 😊
You were thinking about Judy Collins, but Collins can't hold a candle to Joan Baez. Baez is an original, even when covering other writer's songs, Collins was adequate. Baez was an activist for human rights long before the term had been coined, and brought a young Dylan into the New York folk scene and later on tour, introducing him to her large and fervent fan base. It's possible that the world would have never seen Dylan had Baez not been his champion. Hang in there Lee, it's been a long cold winter but the sun is returning;)
A really wonderful song. Try the Judas Priest cover as well, it is nearly as haunting as this original but they shortened the song and ommited some verses. Still a great rendition.
If you haven't seen the Dylan movie with Timothy Chalamet, do yourself a favor and see it. It's historical and it's great. The music alone is worth the time.
A great contribution to the current Dylan conversation. Yeah, he's a genius, but also just a guy and kind of a jerk sometimes.
Yes
Next, listen to Judas Priest's cover.
Looking for your Friday Frank reaction . . .
You were thinking of Judi Collins, I believe?
Bachanaris Bra zilianas .
Can we do the whole album?
Maybe you're thinking of Judy Collins?
That’s actually her playing those guitar parts. Here she it solo, and doing a great job of it. ruclips.net/video/ptxxq5PUHEk/видео.htmlsi=zcvxPIlu-Hn-wD7b
What happened to PHISH saturday?
Beautiful. I never agreed with her politics, but what a voice! (And I think you're thinking of Joni Mitchell. Joni's good, but she can't match Joan, vocally.)
heh here's kind of a cute little vid of Joan imitating Bob ruclips.net/user/shortsv026WuCxSaU Not a bad job actually ;)
About Dylan Right???
You're thinking of Judy Collins. She's been known to join Joan Baez in a duet of Diamonds & Rust. (ruclips.net/video/xZGNTT6dKB8/видео.html)
Joan Baez was part Mexican American so to compare her to Judy Collins or Joanie Mitchell is missing the profoundness and depth of her soul.
Haven't listened to a lot of Joan, because I generally haven't been impressed by what I have heard. This is lovely, though.
Great song. Beats the hell out of Dylan's nonsense.
I think Judas Priest does a much better version of this song. Especially the live version from Unleashed in the East.
Judas Priest does a much better version of Diamonds and Rust!
