two weeks ago this dude helped me replace the brakes on my silverado. now i click a video from an entire different channel and hes helping me replace a dimmer switch. all hail sir jim, handyman supreme
dunno if you guys gives a damn but if you're stoned like me atm you can stream pretty much all the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Been watching with my gf lately :)
I subscribe to your channel just now because you have the best explanation for this type of switch. The problem I’m having is when the light in the kitchen is turned off, I can’t control it on the light switch in the garage. How do I correct that. I cannot keep a constant flow of electricity even though the dimmer is on just because I want to control both switches. So please help?
With this video, I’ve learned how to changed lights switch to 3 way dimmer switch, I was very confident doing it after watching your video. It was very helpful, thank you so much for sharing your talent👍👍👍
Thank you very much for your detailed explanation!! It worked for me!! The cable of my home are different colors but the lead power of the black screw was the way to know were to put it in the dimmer.
Your video was very helpful in helping me go quite a bit of electrical work in my home changing out all my switches and especially those two ways had me stumped until I looked at your video over and over. Thanks a million.
This was extremely helpful. I was scare to mess this up but you and your camera person did a fantastic job. Step by step instructions. I am not a handyman by all means but this made me proud. Thanks a lot.
Thank you! This was incredibly helpful. I like your tip about flagging the power lead with tape to not lose track of it when everything is disconnected.
Thanks for sharing this video, I like the way you explained it!. But I got a question? The traveling wires can be connected to either one from the wall? Except with the feeding power and the ground of course!. Thank you again!..
This was extremely helpful. Very thorough and understandable. Thanks a lot ! I didn't know a 3-pole from a ski-pole but after watching this I got'er done.
U saved my ass. Installing plugs and light switches for my brother inlaw and ran across a few 3 way switches. All They j box wires are all ran little different. Checked for continuity and got lost. Got me scratching my head.

I’m replacing a 3 way switch that didn’t have a ground wire connected to it. Is that strange/problematic?? It’s a similar setup to this video - two switches next to each other
Excellent video, especially attaching electrical tape over the wire nuts. Only thing is that wire nuts do not take the place of pliers to twist the ends first, and then use the wire nuts.
Very "hands on" and "step by step" video, Jim. Good stuff. The only change I would STRONGLY recommend is that before replacing the switch cover.....even before TAPING the wire nuts on....is to turn on the power to TEST that the job WAS done correctly. (No offense to YOU....but you're not doing OURS! We klutzes are! LOL) This avoids any surprises and backtracking. (re: your comment at 14:10 "if we did our job correctly!" It'd be a shame to have to disassemble everything if it ISN'T correct). :-)
Of the 2 red traveller wires (solid red and red with the white line) are they basically the same and does it matter which one is tied to the existing black and red wires coming out of the wall?
This was one of my questions, too. I attached green to ground (bare copper wire, in my case), red to red, white (from the wall) to red (from the switch, marked with a label) and black (from the wall, previously attached to the old switch with a black screw) to black (from the new switch). Seems about right.
If u leave the lights dimmed all the way down turn off light and then go to switch that is not a dimmer and turn that switch on will the lights still be dimmed? Or do u need to install 2 dimmer switches for that?
If you install dimmers on both 3-way switches, will you have FULL dimming range on both? For example, if you use the first dimmer to dim the lights to, say, 40%, can someone at the 2nd dimmer location put the intensity back up to full brightness? GREAT VIDEO!!
Excellent video I’m trying to install the same dimmer except on the existing switch I have a hot a red and the ground three wires only I’ve located the hot wire... how do I wire it? It is a two way switch also just like yours in the video any help would be great thanks,
I have a question, the wires coming out of my wall are red white and black (and of course green for ground), I actually have this same dimmer switch...would I connect the black wire to the black hot and the red wire to the white neutral?
My question is the right side has the power and he transfer the to the new switch box on the left side but the ceiling do have power on one side but it has on the other side how can I switch so it can have power on with side plz help
Great video but what’s the solution if both switches don’t work correctly. I just installed a Leviton three way dimmer switch in my upstairs hallway. I turned the light on at the top of the stairs and then I went to the bottom to turn the light off and it worked but when I came back upstairs the light won’t cut back on. I then have to go back downstairs to turn the light back on. I get the same results in reverse, if I turn the light on at the bottom of the stairs and then go upstairs the light does turn off but if I go back downstairs I can’t get the light back on. What am I missing here? The hot is connected to the black and I thought the traveler wires were interchangeable. I’m lost and so sick of running down to the fuse box. 🙂 Please help. 👏🏽
You'd still be ok if the wire that you pointed out was 'hot' was in fact not hot because the two switches of a 3 way switch set up are wired the same? Or am I missing something?
Had the exact swap. One thing not shown is the secondary switch will NOT turn the lights on without the new dimmer 3-way being switched on. If the new 3-way dimmer is turned off, you can not turn the lights on from the secondary switch. Not a big deal with me, just don't understand why. At first, I thought I mixed up the Feeders but I had the exact setup, black feeder to red, red feeder to red/white
I made my first comment, below, because I've followed the instructions given here "to a T".....and I'm getting no joy. My front hall light is operated by EITHER a switch in the kitchen OR the one at the front door. I want to put a DIMMER in place of the on/off only switch in the kitchen. I've checked to find which is the "live" line (turns out it's the Red one, not the usual black), and attached it to the "different" color terminal on my new Lutron dimmer switch. Attached the remaining black and white to the OTHER two (brass) terminals and the green to ground. Everything looks great.....BUT this new switch (and dimmer) will ONLY work if the other switch, down at the front door is ON! Obviously NOT what I want. Suggestion?
OK, situation fixed. I hadn't "tagged" the wires I took off the old NON-dimmer switch so I couldn't determine WHICH one went on WHICH terminal. I finally found another guy's video where he said "just label the wires in the box with painters tape...#1, #2 and #3.....then attach them to ANY of the 3 terminals on the switch. If it doesn't work, just play "musical terminals" (like musical chairs) and keep moving them around, in sequence: move wire 1 to where wire 2 was, etc until you STUMBLE on the combo that works. Worked on the second "pattern" I tried. Yippee!
one will be your master the other the slave, your most likely will only be able to dim the lights with one switch but you will be able to turn the light on and off with both.
If you install dimmers on both 3-way switches, will you have FULL dimming range on both? For example, if you use the first dimmer to dim the lights to, say, 40%, can someone at the 2nd dimmer location put the intensity back up to full brightness? GREAT VIDEO!!

Thank you so much for making this video! I have successfully, on my first try installed a 3-way switch. I feel like I can build a house now!🤣🤣

Good video. Just curious, the 2 traveler wires from the junction box are interchangeable when it comes to connecting them to the 3-way dimmer switch?
Excellent info and tips. Thank you
Great precise video..thanks you so much!!
Great video. Saved me some money. I really appreciate your knowledge and expertise.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent work Jim, I just did the same switched out all my switches and plugs
Thank you for watching and of course subscribing.

Excellent video, especially attaching electrical tape over the wire nuts. Only thing is that wire nuts do not take the place of pliers to twist the ends first, and then use the wire nuts.

What specifically makes that switch a 3-way switch, since it only controls a single light from two different locations?
Very good video ! Thank you .

Yes it will still be dimmed. Good question.
Thank you sir, now it's so easy.
Anyone know if the slave switch is wired the same way as the 1st one.

Hello, did you find your answer ??? I am in the same page as you…2 Dimmers 3 way switch both
@@loobvio5574was told only 1 dimmer?
Thanks for the vid. Helped me out!
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the instructions!
You bet!
Great video!! Does this work if I have three (3) switches working one(1) light?
Thanks.
I have the same scenario?
Excellent video I’m trying to install the same dimmer except on the existing switch I have a hot a red and the ground three wires only I’ve located the hot wire... how do I wire it? It is a two way switch also just like yours in the video any help would be great thanks,
Thanks, I got mine wired up...seems done right but it only turns the light on and off..
No dimming....anyone have any thoughts?
Can you put the dimmer switch on either switch or just the one with the incoming power from the breaker panel?
Good question. You can put it on either side
I have a question, the wires coming out of my wall are red white and black (and of course green for ground), I actually have this same dimmer switch...would I connect the black wire to the black hot and the red wire to the white neutral?

Hey my brother thankyou
Glad it was helpful!
Which ground did you tie into? Power or wiring from other switch?
Sorry can you rephrase the question?
Best one

I appreciate that.Thanks for watching.
What's the red wire for
Thank you

Did it work correctly before you changed the switch?
@@getitdonehomerepair Yes, everything was fine. I could turn it on and off at each switch no matter which one was turned off first.

Does it matter what switch you put the dimmer on if you have 2 switches?
No you can put it on either one.

Yes you need to connect the ground. Check the video 8:00-9:00 you will see me connect it. Thanks for watching.
Get It Done Home Repair mine is single pole . I don’t see there is ground wire but on mine . What if I don’t connect it ?
Am I understanding that it doesn’t matter which travler wire you connect to the red or red an white dimmer switch travlers?
.
I thought the copper screw is the power wire. Amo wrong?
Well at least I don’t have to call you sparky the car guy 😜🍺
chris parenti Hahaha spanky
Why not place the wires on the new dimmer switch one at a time as an added assurance they will not get mixed up?
Yes you could do that also. Thanks for watching and your input
Why did you need to cut the wires and strip them? Why can’t you re attach them?
Thanks...EZ PZ
