@@leepeartlifeson3311 proven to hold up after the rest of time Hard to believe it'll be 60 yrs old in 2028!! Time doesn't taint great music. Probably 1968:was my favorite yr for music. 👍
You have to appreciate that the use of pot and psychedelics was pretty common in the 60s. And most of those "users" came through it just fine. Those substances definitely transformed music of the era -- most notably among The Beatles and their contemporaries; the shift was so dramatic. This kind of song drops right into that psychedelic arena. Let's go for a magic carpet ride meant let's drop acid and see where it takes us.
Having lived and lived this era of music, it is with great joy that I see younger people, from all over the world, discovering the music of the high renaissance from 1964 to 1974, roughly, ending with the end of the Vietnam War. Hearing people in Europe, today, using words like vibes and groovy and into...pretty far out. Those at the time who used herbs rather than the prescribed derailleurs, made timeless music treasured even now. Others went down darker paths, and are largely forgotten. The leading zeitgeist was one of mind-expansion, not destruction. Y'all would fit right into any number of gathers at that time, where future geniuses shared ideas, books, music, food and so on. And laughter. Lots of laughter. Peace and love. PS. In other news...not my fault.
This was a huge hit during the psychedelic period of rock. Another one was "Inna Godda Davida" (sp?) by Iron Butterfly. BTW, both of these bands along with Deep Purple were also considered Acid Rock Bands as well as Blues Psychedelic Rock Bands.
I was in 6th grade in 1968. We were lucky enough to have a jukebox in the cafeteria with all the current hit songs on it. For a dime you got one selection, and for a quarter you got four. "Magic Capet Ride" and "Born to be Wild" were two of the amazing songs we selected every day to serenade us while we ate our lunch. Man, how fortunate could a 12 year old be to hear those magnificent songs while they were actually moving up the charts and brand new.
Turning 63 this year and boy this song takes me back to my 9 years older than me hippie brother in the late 60s ha, he had the motorcycle and the black light posters and lava lamp and beads in his doorway, not to mention a big old box of 8 track tapes!
It’s Fun ! That’s it , the music is good the vibe is fun . There’s a lot of experimentation in the jam but it was all new, no matter the sound effects we could still dance to it
Can not have an event with a DJ without this or born to be Wild being played. Love this Band , was 18 in 1968 along with CCR, Lynyed Skynyrd and The Band. Favorite bands.
Opiates, bad. Psychedelics? Pot? Not so much. While the former crushed peoples’ souls, the latter expanded their minds. And I always loved this jam.✌️❤️🎶
This song is more about letting the music take you on a journey more than it is about drugs. If you do listen to the lyrics it is about a musical journey (the magic carpet). Now if drugs helped people get i to that state of being, different story all together.
I was weaned on Steppenwolf, followed by Beatles, Led, Pink Floyd, Frijid Pink, CCR...cool older brother. RIP 1974. I'm 63 now. Great channel. Edit: John Kay escaped over the wall with his mother as a kid. Many of their songs reference this trauma. The long song/lp "Monster " describes the USA we're trying to escape into a new era now.
Songs like this were meant to heighten your sensory perceptions while enjoying hallucinatory drugs like LSD. I was in high school when this came out and was living in the San Francisco area, what a wild time!!!!!
Before they were Steppenwolf, they were 'Sparrow'. I saw them then in SF. 'The Pusher' was incredibly powerful live, with those "big speakers" pounding your chest. Cheers, --bd
I was a huge fan of Steppenwolf back then. The shortened version was on top 40 radio, and that version, the band played on the Smothers Brothers show. The video on this channel wasn't played on the show. It was just the group playing with an oscilloscope reacting to the music.
My brother, born 1954 died 2021, had the album Steppenwolf the Second which featured "Magic Carpet Ride". Hearing this brings back the memories I have of him listening to that album as he got ready for school. This and Led Zeppelin 3 were his favorite albums.
I was just 12. Loved it then and now👍 ahhh the 60s. They say if you can remember them you were not really there 😂😂. Medically induced music?? Well. Maybe😂😂 still sounds great. Glad you liked it..
John Kay is a very good singer. The first time I heard this fabulous song in 68 I knew it would be big, sure was. I love the psychedelic sound from that era. Actually one of my favorite songs ever, it's 🔥🔥🔥🔥
To get that introduction sound, guitarist Michael Monarch created feedback then it was spliced on to the beginning of the song. John Kay wrote Magic Carpet Ride after buying a new high quality hi-fi system. According to him started writing lyrics “about how great our new stereo system sounded”, adding in imagery about making a wish. The line “between the sound machine” refers to the way we used have giant speakers set up, then blast the music❤️
This was huge in Jr. High School in 68. I saw John Kay & Steppenwolf years later at the Navy Enlisted Mans Club in Oak Harbor, Wash. & on the Riverboat Predident in New Orleans. Steppenwolf Second Album is great from start to finish. Don't Step On The Grass.
Love watching your reactions because they are always so much fun and they make me smile. You mentioned that you were relating it to drugs and although it has a psychedelic vibe, for me anyway, it speaks about music. In the lyrics when it says, “close your eyes girl, step inside girl, let the music take you away”, to me it’s saying if you close your eyes and let the music take over that it’s like being on a magic carpet ride because of where the music takes you as you relax and just let it take over your mind and body. I don’t know how others interpret it but that’s always been my own experience and thoughts whenever I listen to this song, and music in general actually. I know from watching your reactions that you both know what I mean by that because you have shown me that various songs have affected both of you deeply as you listened to them and they profoundly touched your heart . Anyway, that’s how I see it when I listen to this song and maybe no one else does but that’s okay. Have a wonderful day my friends and take care of each other! ❤
Since you loved this check out the video version of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly. There is a drum solo that every kid played on their desk at school.
Happily the radio stations played this drug song back in the day!! My favorite is a long song called "Monster" sort of a history lesson put to music!!!
Thanks for the great Carpet Ride Trip, I liked taking a trip without taking any drugs, this song always been a favorite, 1968 I was in the 8th grade definitely no drug's, Peace 😍✌️ and Love❤️ your forever Young Hippie Gary 🕺💃 lf you liked this you should listen to Iron Butterfly "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" full version it about 17 minutes but worth everyone!😅 your now in the Psychedelic zone 🤪 😜 😅 😜 🤪 Peace 😍✌️
This song is about psychedelic drugs, although drugs are a bad name. Drugs (and pusher) refer to addictive chemicals. Heroin, cocaine, meth, etc. This song refers to LSD. It says to lie down between two speakers. Under the influence of LSD, you get overwhelmed by the music........thus the "magic carpet ride". On the "Pusher" a "dealer" is a person who deals with LSD (acid) and Marijuana while a "Pusher" hustle addictive drugs.
It’s not about drug ABUSE. It’s about getting stoned, for sure, on pot, or psychedelics And being taken away in your mind (look inside, girl) on a journey of the imagination. Nothing negative there stated or implied.
I would say that this song is more about "drug USE" than "drug ABUSE", as it is quite obvious that it's about psychedelic drugs like acid or mescaline rather than addictive drugs such as heroine or cocaine which will ultimately destroy your life. Great tune..............
Another of my favourite songs. Psychedelic Rock, I think. Another similar type of song was Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donovan. Most of these songs were about the drug scene. As was Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds by the Beatles and White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. Give these a go👍
The electric sound you were asking about is electronic feedback that we hear when a guitar or microphone is too close to an amp. The Beatles were the first to use it on purpose in the beginning of "I feel fine"
