I played this 45 record constantly! I was around 12 yrs old when this song came out. Check out "BORN to be wild." Another great song by them. Yes this song was part of the psychedelic 60s.
My Mom broke into my bedroom after listening to this thru my door and said this song was about drugs and she confiscated my 8 track tape. I didn't tell her I had it on vinyl too.
We were 'enhanced' alright, LOL! I saw this band in the front row, mere feet from lead singer John Kay back in the early 70s, it was mind blowing, everyone was passing joints around and many were tripping. 2 hours of classic Steppenwolf for $5.00. Those were the days! Next try their epic, Monster, it is sadly still relevant now. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
My brother and I come home very late after a night with friends, music and weed. The mixed aroma of weed, incense and patchouli oil on us and mom gets a displeased look on her face and says “what is that awful smell? You smell like dead people!” 😂 By the way nice name. In the sixties two of my brothers owned GTO. One a ‘66 and the other a ‘67.
Heh, Angela, the song was written about the great sound of his new stereo, the lead singer, John Kay, admitted "I may have smoked a joint" the night he got the idea for the song.
Yes, the song is about 'you know what" It's "Acid Rock"-- Psychedelic rock" ....The album (long) version of the song was played more on underground FM than AM.
🇨🇦 There was a music Renaissance in the mid-1800's which gave us the Classical Composers and their concertos ! Then there was another music Renaissance between 1959 and 1989 !
YEAH. Alright. Excellent request. That took me back bell bottoms jeans, ty dyed shirts, Peace ✌ signs, black light's and Shag carpet and incense. I believe you are spot on my dear. Far out.
Great band from that late sixties early seventies time. Lead singer and songwriter John Kay was an East German who, as a child, escaped to the west with his mother. He sings about it in the song "Renegade".
A couple years ago I was working with a young lady of about 20 years old. She jammed out and sang every word to this song. I said 'holy crap you know this song'. She said yes 'don't you?, I've been listening to this song since I was in my crib.'.
Great song and reaction like always Angela... yes I agree with you I was a teenager when these guys were hot... and lots of mind inhancing drugs back in those days,,,, epecially with rockers !!!
Check out "The Pusher" by them--a great song, and no ambiguity about what it's about. "The Good Place" is one of my favorite shows from the last 10 years--great writing / acting all the way around. Hope you enjoy it.
5:03.Sure sounds like it to me..We sure did a lot of drugs to it back then..(Lotsa LSD floating around ) Still Makes me wanna fire up a blunt today!! Primo pick, Anglea!
YES, it's one of the anthem songs of the 60s, I was 18 in 1968 and I can say with all knowledge of actually being there in real time, the answer is Yes!
Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet Ride !!! .... Born to Be Wild ... is one of their mega hits and Blue Oyster Cult cover it and also had a hit with it. I had a "Green Thumb" back then and it came in handy as they were spraying paraquat to kill the plants. Not good. I quit all of that long ago in the 70's but not until after I saw that Lynyrd Skynyrd concert in Anaheim just before the plane crash. An officer came from behind and took the joint I was passing but only came to kick out our friend who was falling asleep. I didn't like that it made me quiet but it did help me concentrate on doing a job. It's called "Spacing out" and it was great for an upset stomach.
Hi, a bit of information about this song. John Kay wanted to create a "wall of sound" that almost is like a real wall when you hit up on it. I never have done drugs but I think others who have have hit that "wall of sound" when listening to this song. It is mesmerizing even when you have all your faculties. A great reaction and very smart in caching things in a song. Oh by the way, they are one of my favorite bands from the '60s.
This is song is one song I can honestly say I cannot stand..I would hear it as a kid and plug my ears then when I was older I gave it another chance and same results lol
I'm slow. I never thought of that before, but now I agree with you. I mean magic was all around because of these doors of perception, as Aldous Huley would call the Promethean cosmic triggers. Roll up for the magical mystery tour. Roll up, see the show. Magic Bus. Lots of fun music around that time to explore, and expand your mind's ear.
Yes we tripped back then and this was a perfect song to listen to (even when you weren't) along with Hendrix , Grateful Dead, The Doors ect.. it was a very different time and very different vibe for sure, but the music still lives on and still kicks ass..✌
as a future selection I would recommend a song by Eric Clapton called Tears in Heaven, it was written shortly after Clapton's baby boy fell out of a high rise window, this song will have you in tears in the first minute but it's so beautiful
the amount of great music from the 60's and 70's is just endless
Well it is endless because the 60s ended in 69 and the 70s ended in 79 🤓
And it wasn't discriminating either!
I loved listening to Rock & Roll, R&B, Country and Western, Pop and Adult Contemporary.
How you like my generation now!❤😂
This song was played on the radio CONSTANTLY in the late 60s , early 70s.
Yes it did.
I'm pretty sure that it wasn't played constantly. 😕. I remember those days.
The short version was.
@michaelrosas1848 seriously ??
@budcunningham6732 Yes. Seriously. It couldn't be constantly. They had plenty of other great music to play, and they had advertisers.
As usual your Mom was right....LOL
✊😂 Smart
I think it was about sex lol
When was that?
It surely doesn't even have to be about drugs at all
We were 'enhanced' alright, LOL! My wife and I saw them two years in a row (1997 and 1998) at Willow Grove Naval Air Base in Willow Grove, Pa. Still sounded incredible.
This song is the epitome of the psychedelic sixties... whenever I hear it I smell patchouli oil and the world turns dayglo!
Patchouli!! 💯 Don't forget to wear your "peasant shirt & Wallabies". 😄
And that sweet smokey smell rises throughout the room. Peace out and pass the Doritos.
@@mcbeezee2120 for me more likely a Nehru shirt and suede Clark's desert boots!

@@bradsense7431 the best years, although I also like 65's.
yes !! i believe it IS about YOU- KNOW -WHAT !!!
Angela.... Great choice.... This tune was still a hit in 1975, when I was 17....
Welcome to the 60s. Great music you're constantly playing for us old guys who lived back then!! Olol
The late, great Goldy McJohn, a legend on the organ.
Goldie went nuts on this gem.
A classic song from the 60s. I love when Angela grooves to the music.
Heh, Angela, the song was written about the great sound of his new stereo, the lead singer, John Kay, admitted "I may have smoked a joint" the night he got the idea for the song.
Great Canadian-American band, formerly known as The Sparrows.
Great classic tune! Iconic of the era, but that survives the test of time. Born To Be Wild is their other top hit.
Great old classic, this is the first time I’ve listened to it with headphones, what a jam
That is chair dancin' song! Loved Steppenwolf!
ahhhh... 1968.... LSD was just getting really popular abut that time.....
Taking Acid, magic carpet ride !
Yeah. The song IS about YOU KNOW WHAT!!!
Try their trilogy "Monster/Suicide/America". Incredible. "Born To Be Wild" is a must as well.
I can't speak for others, but we got high to this back in the day. Its currently being used in a tire company commercial.
IKR? 😂
Yep that's what it is about
Still an all time great song.
"Close your eyes, girl, let the sounds take you away!"
You'll need to listen to "The Pusher" and "Sookie Sookie."
"Born to be Wild" is your next song from this great band.
I love this baby girl❤
Wore it out on an 8 track😅
This is the short version.
They also had a song name "Don't Step On The Grass Sam" about MJ being illegal.
One of the most under rated talented groups of the time! Thanks Angela.
"Is this song about you know what?" "Mind expanding substances." ☮😉
You can't live in the past, but you can't forget old friends either. This is an old friend from grade 8. It still feels wonderful!!
And, "Snowblind Friend" is another cautionary tale.
Oh, the 60's, LOL! Fun one, Angela, thanks for sharing. 🙂
Thanks angela for playing this great music
This classic was one of the first songs to be recorded at Phil Spectors Wall of Sound studio! It changed the way recordings were done!
Yes, the song is about 'you know what" It's "Acid Rock"-- Psychedelic rock" ....The album (long) version of the song was played more on underground FM than AM.

Yes, yes ,yes
Yes it is. You are feeling it too! Tripping!
It was 1968! Vietnam Nam War and hippies!!😅
YEAH. Alright. Excellent request. That took me back bell bottoms jeans, ty dyed shirts, Peace ✌ signs, black light's and Shag carpet and incense. I believe you are spot on my dear. Far out.
lol I know I was enhanced a few times when I listened to it back in the 70s.
That whole time of music was about that stuff, so many different artist referenced it in there music.
used to roller skate to this...just saying:)
Great band from that late sixties early seventies time. Lead singer and songwriter John Kay was an East German who, as a child, escaped to the west with his mother. He sings about it in the song "Renegade".
This song plays during a tire commercial, I think it’s Goodyear. It plays quite often.
A couple years ago I was working with a young lady of about 20 years old. She jammed out and sang every word to this song. I said 'holy crap you know this song'. She said yes 'don't you?, I've been listening to this song since I was in my crib.'.
yes LSD i loved it back in the day
This song was the 'B' side of the 'Born to be Wild' 45rpm record.
Love the way you broke a smile when the song kicked in
"Just dropped in (to see what condition my condition was in) by Kenny Rogers and The First Edition?
Great song and reaction like always Angela... yes I agree with you I was a teenager when these guys were hot... and lots of mind inhancing drugs back in those days,,,, epecially with rockers !!!
Fabulous classic song. Glad you liked this!! 😅
Check out "The Pusher" by them--a great song, and no ambiguity about what it's about.
"The Good Place" is one of my favorite shows from the last 10 years--great writing / acting all the way around. Hope you enjoy it.
takes me back warm beer and cigs
I used to listen to this so loud it blew my speakers and the bass sounded like a fuzz bass. I loved it.
"is this song about you know what?"........I laughed so hard my stomach hurt...that was awesome!
Bring on the Blue Cheer,Acid of the 60s when this and other tripping music was playing all day on the radio
This is great to see 1.5k likes, Angela.
I'm in good company.
my first time hearing this song in true stereo. thank you.
This music was always fun to hear. I knew not what it was talking about. I believe you’re correct. Your reaction was really awesome.

This and Born to be Wild are my favorite Steppenwolf tracks.
This song is why im glad I was born in 1956 and many others
You're right, "you know what". I was in my late teens when this came out, a magic rise.
CCR's song "Looking Out My Back Door" is a good example of enhanced music. Thanks for listening to this one, Angela. Brought lots of memories.
The distortion is amazing
It's a metaphor for the lifestyle of the times whether or not you used such , mind expanding substances...
Everyone's nodding, yes, Angela, it IS about you know what.
It's Steppenwolf's masterpiece imo.
Most every song from that day had a alot Medically induced spirit to them..I was 11 yrs old in 68..
This song is about laying down on the carpet between his stereo speakers ( the sound machine) and listening to music.
Haven't heard this 1 in awhile great song
My first concert. The Guess Who opened for them.
Definitely about tripping, which can be a sort of magic carpet ride.
I remember their song 'Born to be wild' , but hadn't heard this one. A rocking good song-Colin Ward
Love your dancing Angela 🎉
Yes, it is about “you know what” 🍄 💊😉😂🤣
This was a huge hit when it came out.

Is this song about "enhancement subtances"? LOL!! Ya think?
This was the sixties! If you remember it, you weren't there. LOL

I believe yes they are referring to substances of the hallucigenic variety. I can confirm this by personal experience.
One of the best 60s psychedelic pop songs. Nothing more for me to add to comments below. Good choice Angela. Stay in the groove, baby
There is actually a cool techno style remix of this song.
Keep in mind, John Kay, the singer here, always spoke against the heavy drugs. "The Pusher" comes to mind.
