About 12 weeks in to Bryan's course now. Partly coming to it from the wisdom he imparted on Homeskoolin - figuring even though I'm not a bluegrass diehard I could badly use the deep stuff Bryan can teach. It's been way more than I could have expected. The amount of material, the way it progresses, and the quality of it is just astonishing. Highly, highly recommended.
@@BobbyCulpepper.srv3fenderI'd say I was an intermediate player. Bryan's course splits into Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Improv. I'm into the Intermediate stuff now but spent a fair bit of time in Basic - there's a lot of important stuff there and my right-hand flatpicking was pretty non-existent. I did the 30-day intro just to make sure I'd like it - I get paid in Australian pesos so everything US$ costs - then went to 1 year.
Some great points made here. Whenever I go to a bluegrass session, I only bring my 50 watt Marshall stack, I leave my 100-watter at home. There’s no “you” in bluegrass.
I had the pleasure of meeting Bryan a few weeks back in Nashville - just a chance meeting at a show he and I both attended. As expected, he was very nice, and graciously spent a few minutes chatting with me. When I told him how much I enjoyed the Homeskoolin' episodes that featured you guys at work, he smiled and said "Buk is a Good Dude and an amazing talent". Hard to argue with that. I looked at signing up for Bryan's lessons, but just haven't pulled the trigger. This sealed the deal. Thanks again.
That was one great session...ive been watchin ya off n on for awhile and i always learn something but ill be watchin that one over and over...thank you tom....and bryan of course...
Doctor, the insight on this one is off the chart! Thanks to Bryan for approaching you in need of content. ABL - Always Be Learning! Always appreciated.
Great conversation! I’m a big fan of both y’all. The part when you got into frequencies and the volume of the guitar in a mix, is fascinating. I’ve played since I was 10 (1972), but never been in anything more than a “garage band,” back in high school. So I’m generally always playing by myself. Thru the years, I’ve become less in favor of midrange tones and I therefore play most of the tune in the bridge pup or a blend. I also dip my mids on my tube amps. Love that tone. Since Christmas, I’ve been playing most of genuine thru my Spark Mini (awesome gift from my wife). I really dig all the options for playing along to my favorite songs, backing tracks, etc. BUT, it’s dawned on me that the preset tones I’ve created, while sounding killer by themselves, get totally lost between the bass guitar and drums. So I’ve been turning up the guitar volume to hear myself play. At some point, though, it doesn’t sound “musical.” So after my first watch of this video, and some other Home Schoolin’ episodes, I started pulling up my middle and switching to bridge or bridge/ middle, depending on the guitar. ***LIGHT BULB MOMENT***. I can now clearly hear my guitar WITHIN THE MIX, vs having to be on top of it. So cool! So thanks! I’m an old dog, but I keep learning new tricks, thanks to shows like this. Please, to the both of you, keep doin what your doin! 🤓🎸👍
YESSSS!!! w What a great episode. Tom, I can't remember which episode it was, but way back you said "if you can't hear your guitar, IT'S THE WRONG SOUND!" I think about that every day, recording or playing live. One of the best pieces of wisdom you've shared. Thanks, Larry
Thanks guys - great info and teaching the next generation all of the tricks. + the conversation and encouragement is wonderful. Keep it rolling Uncle Larry!
You and Bryan obviously have a fantastic personal connection. Each of you master artists in your own right. Put together, wow, the musical magic you two conjure up. Thanks for sharing your friends with us Uncle Larry.
Uncle Larry I love what you said about hearing the guitar in the mix without raising the volume, but using EQ. Thar concept immediately becomes clear when you start recording. I love finding that space too. It's challenging and also you find out alot about your playing. Great video...😎🎸
Oh man … they are gonna love this at artist works … I did about 3 years over there in Bryan’s class mostly because he’s my flat picking hero and I just wanted to have some kind of access to his wisdom and talent. He’s a natural teacher and just so damn good. I learned a lot but I was just so tense all the time I couldn’t hang any longer. It is so much fun to see you two guys talking and teaching. Thanks … this was a real treat.
Great chat guys, I enjoyed it thanks, a really like it when you fellas get under the skin of it. It's very interesting listening to the wheels go round, this is where the great tips and information comes from. 👍👍👍🥃Respect to you fellas.
Man love bryan, but you Larry are a new favorite on youtube. You seem so chill, dude i wanna have a whiskey with. Keep them videos coming and i be watching.
I’m on the Bryan artistworks course…..must say, I work full time as a musician here in Australia, but it’s definitely worth starting at the beginner stage of the course….just getting those basics down, or even revising some of it….I’m 8 lessons in and haven’t learned a piece yet, but I’m getting a lot out of it, and my sound is significantly better! There is great advice in every corner of that course.
This is the absolute pinnacle of music knowledge and it's being openly shared to everyone -- it's fucking amazing to be a part of, really. Thank you, Tom and Bryan -- please let me emphasize: you have immeasurable influence on the progression of modern music by sharing your passion this way.
The analogy of driving a car and playing guitar is just great. It perfectly explains the situation when you control what you play, but also listen to other musicians and letting the music and instrument drive you. That balance is hard to achieve to be perfect, but when you do it's just a feeling that's hard to describe. Thanks a lot for this. :)
What a fantastic interview. Just when I think I need to practice more i’m reminded to be better at listening. It’s not always easy to remember that constant sound is just noise. Music is created be adding space to noise.
Wow, I absolutely love watching you guys keeping it so real and it seems like 2 guys who have been best friends their whole lives. Thanks so much for sharing so much.
Awesome! I said it before, I'll say it again: Bryan is my favourite guest on the Homeskoolin' show. I'm glad to hear he's doing his own videos. Pretty please, if the opportunity ever comes up, I would so love to hear you two jam together. That would be lightning in a bottle!
Bryan seems like such a genuine dude and incredibly talented musician. I can't play a single bluegrass tune but I’ve always loved the sounds and I’ve admired the musicianship. I was already aware of Bryan before I started watching Tom's channel but as I’ve gotten to know him more I’ve started to give serious thought to taking his course.
This is great Little Tommy, thanks for sharing. I have been renewing Bryan's course for years but haven't dedicated myself to it, not sure why because he is my absolute favorite current bluegrass player, this is inspiring!
@@tomcoryell I learned his "Ain't no Misbehavin'" when the covid lockdown first happened and went down his rabbit hole..guy is a world class acoustic guitarist..he's a great teacher as well.
Tom, you did it again! An exceptional episode with truely deep insights and barely naked honesty about the magic of creating music for the music´s sake! The three great T´s: Time, Touch, Tone plus putting the ego far way behind the song! Thank you so much for that! Cheers form Munich! Christian

Also in the AW class! Couldn’t agree more.
Where you already a decent player to start? I've thought about trying Bryan's course, I already did Guthries, but I didn't get much out of it

I don’t comment often and I imagine there a lot of guys like me who feel this way. These videos are amazing and deeply insightful. Thank you Tom
"I got invited to leave on a session..." made me laugh pretty hard. Good stuff. I could listen to you guys talk for hours.
Love the Supertramp at the end of the video!! 💚🎸

Brilliant convo😂
On the hunt. Sick riff.
Each of your and Bryan's personalities feels like the personification of electric and acoustic guitars. Great separately but even better together.
Love you both...world class people...players...equal. ❤️
Holy crap. That nugget about eq with fader down is fantastic. I just want to thank you for everything you’ve giving us. I truly cherish it.
It's a privilege to be a fly on the wall while you two talk: masters both. Respect, homage, and thanks!
Thanks BUK!!! We appreciate you and all you give and share with us.
