I guess most people forget early in his SNL run he did a couple of serious roles and was actually quite good. He's right his face tonally makes you think comedy, but back then I didn't have that impression at all.
@IDiggPattyMayonnaise Yeah, as much as I enjoyed all the seasons of Brooklyn 99, the earlier season had some really candid-feeling moments that later season lacked, and I was always particularly impressed by his acting in those scenes. He felt like a real person in a way that Oscar winners would envy
I love that subtle jab at Seth cold face timing him during corrections that only a few in the audience got lol also, was that Wally who laughed really loud at that, or Buck?
Seth was the presenter when Andy won a Golden Globe for Brooklyn 99 in 2014, and somewhere there's a picture (I think they showed it on Seth's show) of him welcoming Andy to the stage after he announced the win, and it's clearly such a great relationship. (Also, shout-out to Julie Bowen, who was supposed to read the winner, but had the presence of mind to throw it over to Seth, knowing that it would be meaningful to him and Andy for him to read it...)
My favorite thing about Andy Samberg is about 75% of the time I know what joke is coming, but he still manages to present it in a way that makes me laugh obnoxiously
We’ve already seen Andy in serious moments across the body of his comedic work, and I’m glad he got the opportunity to act in Lee with Kate Winslet. Everything Andy does is earnest and heartfelt at its core, IMO, including the goofy stuff. Speaking of comedic actors taking a serious turn, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with Jim Carrey (and Kate Winslet!) is one of my favorite films. Go, Andy!
Yeah, I think most comedic actors get sold short - so mych comedy comes from fully committing to a bit/joke or the character, and there seems to be this assumption that doing that is somehow easier than "proper acting", but in some ways it can actually be harder! So many actors surprise people with a serious role, but when you actually look at their body of work they are always deeply committed to the character work. Like Nick Offerman's turn in The Last of Us - anyone aware of his theatre work was less surprised, but a lot of people just thought he was the funny guy with the 'tache from P&R/whatever. Carrey is another great example, although his super expressive face and great comedic body language for stuff like The Mask and Ace Ventura (sp?) could have made us see him as just a great clown, but he's way more than that! Its a shame, I think the TV industry, and Hollywood, like being able to put people in boxes and market/cast them accordingly, and it means they are often limited in what they get to do/try. How much potential talent are we missing out on because the execs only want to greenlight things that are almost identical to existing successes?
Is this why I find Jewish men so damn hot? It’s weird because in Australia we don’t have the historical cultural experience like we see in American tv. As an Aboriginal Australian, there’s something about Jewish men that speaks to me, could be the salt of the earth mensch thing. Different cultures but similar values.
Great example of an person being serious when needed but still being able to joke around and be authentic. Have always loved Andy Samberg and now I really want to see the movie, especially after hearing him talk about it in such a respectful way.
In the Tradition of Sensational Comedians (Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler) doing Dramatic Roles and Nailing it. Andy, you have earned all the success that comes your way.
It is... SO difficult, as someone who has enjoyed Samberg's work for about 20 years... to not just laugh at everything he says. Kudos for taking on a serious role like this!
As a family friendly show, I’m pretty sure that inappropriate language is necessary, because who makes ruder and swearier jokes than family? And sex isn’t even a naughty word… It’s what you do with it. Bang! (Bang indicates punchline, please laugh now)
I'm not surprised he's a talented dramatic actor. Even in B99 some of the most emotional moments came from him pulling on his dramatic side and they were so much better for it. I'm very excited to see this movie
can Corrections even be considered a cold facetime anymore? If I were Samberg I would just expect a facetime from Seth on thursday afternoon by this point lol
I hope Andy understands how much he is loved in the world. It's tough to be a good guy in this world and he nails it ✌🏻 His reverse roast is still my favorite.♥️
Comedians are amazing when it comes to playing serious acting, Jim Carrey in the Truman show, robin Williams in insomnia and good will hunting, I know Andy will do great in this movie!
What a brilliant way for Andy to introduce himself to serious acting parts and do the film justice while still not compromising his charismatic humour. Andy is one of the best and I look forward to seeing what he does with his film career in more serious roles. The man has acting chops. And FU Frisbee.
I’ve seen so many comedic actors hit it out of the park when it comes to switching to serious dramatic roles (Robin Williams, Bill Murray, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, Whoopie Goldberg, etc. etc.), but not many dramatic actors able to pull off comedic films (although some certainly hold their own on SNL!). Glad to see Andy going for it and becoming such a versatile actor himself!
I have two theories on this: Comedic actors often have great dramatic chops because more often than not, they also have deep wells of darkness to draw from. Then there's timing. Timing is absolutely key in comedy, and I'm not sure to what degree that can be taught. Some people have it, some people don't.

Two things: I saw a glimpses of Andy Samberg's dramatic acting chops in Palm Springs, so landing this role after being expressly singled out by Kate Winslet isn't a shocker. Can't wait to see this historical movie and to watch Winslet and Samberg bring these important people to our attention. Seth, now you know how to get through to Andy via Facetime. You have to put a headshot of Kate in front of your phone screen to get him to pick up for Corrections.

Good to see Samberg trying out and succeeding at serious stuff with great veteran stars. Long time coming. He deserves this success.

A couple of times, it looked like Andy was going to break into a smile, but he clamped it back... So much fun.
0:58 Perfect clip choice, great back of head acting. so much emotion conveyed in the hairs at the back of his neck.
It was the perfect clip because he was in no other scenes.
