    So glad that the hood is back on. It would be interesting if it can be done to turn the charge indicator gauge into a boost gauge on the dash, but it probably ran on the can bus. Have a good week and enjoy your trip to the tag office.

    • @sumduma55
      @sumduma55 9 месяцев назад +11

      The ardrino can replicate can bus signals too. At least certain versions could.
      It has somewhat lost steam since they went after the diesel modders for emissions compliance bullcrap but look into something called a cardrino. I think there was another version of the same project cslled s speeduino. They were completely replacing old broken engine computers that were unattainable along with adding functionality and fuel injection tunes and stuff to older obsolete cars by using an ardrino. There are even hats/shields created to connect the stock ecm wiring for some cars to the io pins and add on bosrds on the ardrino. Ardrino sells a can shield.
      I started just looking into it just before when the EPA went after the diesel people. Sites started dropping out of existence all over the place but there are still some around.
      One of the fun goals was to take stuff from newer cars and install it into older vehicles. Sometimes that required creating a can bus signal or altering one to suit the different technologies involved. One guy put an infotainment center from a 2019 expedition into a mid 2000s chevy pickup truck with a ram cumuns diesel. Fun stuff but he disappeared too. I wanted multi port furl injection on a chevy crate motor dropped into a 80s model chevet scooter. I ended up trashing the idea after a hilarious tractor incident ensued effectively totaling it out.

It's super lightweight, carbon fiber & low powered but proves it can be done. If a gen 1 insight had a lithium battery that was recharged from a wall 🔌 plug-in. It could be made to easily get 70mpgs without being super slow. The 1st prius's were originally designed to get 100mpgs. But then for some strange reason purposely made them only get 50mpgs.

    I'm guessing that the Honda will be faster, once any problems have been sorted out. It's a simple matter of power vs aerodynamic drag, and for all of the Renault's Gallic charm, it's not in the Honda's league when it comes to aerodynamics. I'm not sure about acceleration, The Renault may have the edge in power to weight, and the CVT will definitely help, but the extra drag should slow down the acceleration as the car approaches its upper limit.

Not really necessary, I'll grant you, but a nice creature comfort. And they don't cost all that much. IE an Accele BU-509TD relay. Power to weight greatly affects acceleration, but coefficient of drag times frontal area is a lot of what limits top speed. I don't have a prediction for 0-50, but my money is on the Honda for top speed. That Renault truffle hauler, much as I love it, does not look very slippery to me.

      For the zero to 55 MPH, its going to be close, The flat faced Renault seems to have a tough time accelerating after 45MPH... its hard to say if its the aero or the engine that's holding it back. Now on the other hand, the little diesel is a slug without the turbo or supercharger but the engine will make some power with a fuel rack adjustment. It will be interesting for sure..

Not every video will be a block buster. Keep in mind all the fabrication, engineering, filming, editing and narration is done by one person. I am working as hard as I can to produce these videos, but there is a limit. In this video I tried to make some of the little details interesting, because that is what I had to focus on in order to complete this car. Please turbo it don't bother supercharging it turbo work better for diesels low end grunt. Superchargers are for peaky engines.

      If you seen the earlier videos, we did turbocharge this engine when it was in the saturn. Since the engine is so small, it has a difficult time generating enough exhaust pressure to spin the turbo. We got boost from the turbo, but only when the engine was under a huge load. The supercharger should help performance all around It will be an interesting experiment.

    The alternator wouldn’t drain your battery if connected from B+ to the sense(top pin) because it requires a signal to the bottom wire to start the voltage regulator so it’s open until then

    • @robotcantina8957
      @robotcantina8957  9 месяцев назад

      The way I explained this alternator is exactly how it works. connecting the IG lead directly to the battery lug on the alternator certainly works, however on some tractor forums people have discovered this will slowly drain the battery. The issue seems to be not all regulators are "perfect" . The bottom connection (bottom pin) is for the charge lamp and on this Denso 40 amp alternator the charge lamp is optional.

    Great work, this is my favorite build yet! Did you consider possibly powering the electrical system externally to reduce the load on the engine? The load of the alternator is actually very significant, especially on something with so little power and seems easy enough to eliminate. Not sure how much you drive these cars, but since you don't drive them at night or in bad weather, as little power as that setup will use, you could probably get away with just using a decent battery and charging it when you get back. Or for a more automatic solution, a flexible solar panel on the roof with a charge controller would be a great charger and maintainer. Not using the alternator should gain you several MPG and a measurable performance improvement. You could also easily wire the alternator's ignition terminal to a switch inside the car to turn it off when going for maximum performance and efficiency. Just a thought, keep up the great work!

      The Alternator can be Switched out by cutting the Field supply.

    • @averyalexander2303
      @averyalexander2303 9 месяцев назад

      @@cerealtiller It sure can as I said in the last part of my comment. When the alternator isn't under a load, the only power it uses at a constant RPM will be from the friction of the belt, the brushes and bearings, and the cooling fan.

    • @Hawk7886
      @Hawk7886 9 месяцев назад +1

      Adding a small solar panel to reduce the load is an interesting idea (although it breaks the "cheap" ethos), but I don't get why you'd ever want to manually shut off the charging circuit. The likely miniscule increase in economy isn't worth the risk of potentially forgetting to turn it back on, and it kind of goes against the "simple" idea.

    • @robotcantina8957

      The original hybrid system would require that we use the original 5 speed transmission. Since we are using a Saturn transmission, there is no way to get the hybrid stuff to work.
