  • 10 minutes before the final round of the Freestyle Chess we had Magnus Carlsen discussing with Levon Aronian and Gukesh from the black side of position 207 of Chess960. From the white pieces we had Caruana, Nodirbek and Keymer discussing. Such discussions are always interesting from the perspective of how top player synthesize the positions of chess960 and come up with interesting solutions. Check out the video to enjoy the analysis.

      I actually dont think so... at least not for these super GMs. They all analyse Openings the same way as we would be discussing a math problem. Carlsen's skill is really middlegame and the endgame especially....

    i really prefer this style of chess when watching the top players. rather than everyone showing up and just sitting down waiting for their opponent. sure maybe they chat with others around sitting nearby at their own tables, but its not this.

    This is how chess should be played. Let creativity, intuition and calculation be the primal factor in determining talent. Even magnus is finding it hard to keep a clean sheet which he normally manages to in standard chess variants. Chess 960 should be more mainstream.

    I NEVER saw Ding in ANY of these pre-analysis videos in any rounds - did he not join the other white/black players at all Sagar?
    Edit: Thanks @chillax9184, I DID think about language barrier, but mostly they are "blitzing out variations" - you know, in chess notation. Guess he is just very, very introverted! Woww.

      While most chess players are introverted, Ding is like the most introverted and shy guy Ive ever seen. Poor dude stands in the spotlight for being world champion and cant really handle it.

    interesting how sometimes in chess960 starting positions are just naturally much worse for one color, in this round all of these 3 players lost with black...

      I dont know, does not seem that bad. Its probably just the fact, that the two strongest players in the tournament both got white

      Why would that be true? It's symmetrical like regular chess. The white players just have more effective preparation as they decide the first move.

    Even in 2022, I observed that AF ( and also Hikaru) doesn't discuss opening choices for 960, same here, today is third day and no participation by AF.

      The starting position is revealed minutes before the game so that u can prepare for it! They chose to prepare together as it is efficient! Whereas players like Ding chose to prepare it alone

    Why don´t they give the players a better place to discuss? Always one of them has to sit on the floor and one of them hang awkwardly between the chair and the table. Is it so difficult to provide three chairs and a table in this expensive hotel?
    Edit: at least at 4:19 Levon got a chair.

      They are getting ready to play a chess variant called chess960 (or Fisher random), in which the starting position is unknown prior to the game. This means that they can't count on opening theory and thus have a 10 minutes to discuss the position

      @@pranav2055 The same is true of standard chess, but White is known to have a slight advantage. In 960, White may have an even larger advantage in some starting positions, but by no means completely winning! Not sure where OP is getting his information from.

      All 960 starting positions have been analyzed by computers and evaluated between 0.00 and +0.57 (the standard position is +0.23), so it doesn't look like you're right.

      It's ridiculously difficult for black to keep ⚖️ in some positions
      At this level once you go behind you get mauled
      In a 2 game match one player might get the worse black position and that could be the difference
