People say Bret was terrible at promos, but if you watch his promos with Stone Cold, especially early on, Bret knew exactly what to say at the right time to set Austin up so that he could knock it out of the park. He was walked the line between babyface and heel perfectly so that he didn't entirely lose his fanbase, but he was helping Steve turn babyface himself and become a star. I don't know if there's anyone in wrestling today who can do that for a young up and coming star. Punk?

It definitely made Austin's career. And helped solidify Bret as a full-fledged legend. If it's not his ABSOLUTE favourite, then I'm pretty sure it's at least ONE of Bret's all-time favourite Bret "The (S)Hitman" Hart feuds, as well as one of Austin's favorite "Stone Cold" Steve Austin feuds.

Apparantly Bret picked Austin as a guy to work with whilst he was still in WCW. Bret should be on creative at WWE, he knows his stuff.

Fuck no. WWE doesn't care about matches looking good or feeling real; they don't care about good stories or making new stars. They don't even like wrestling. I'd rather see Bret booking a fucking bar wrestling promotion with 5 wrestlers than ever set foot into WWE creative.

The contrast between Austin in 1989 to 1996 is amazing to analyze. Bret being in the company for 12 years to Steve being a pro for 7 was brought up. That rivalry really made the Stone Cold character a household name.

What a great underrated match Survivor Series 96 was ! And what some forget was it was Bret wanting to wrestle Austin and when he came back his promos were I want to wrestle the best wrestler in the world meaning Austin (in Brets mind at that time)

Shame we don't see more rivalries like this anymore. This had everything you'd ask for in a fan with a long run, heel and face turns, great promos, classic matches, and a feud you didn't get tired of watching.
AEW could do this but they need to practice some patience and they need to get some legends that understand long term booking to help out. Getting others involved could be very beneficial for a young company.

During Austin peak in 98 as the top franchises and champion dominated every roster. Bret Hart makes an anticipated return if the Montreal screwjob never happen or script building a storyline on his return. Challenging Stone Cold Steve Austin for the WWF Championship, Austin biggest rival and challenge who he never beat in both pinball or submission from Survivor Series Wrestlemania 13, and In your House.

It worked really well. Austin didnt mind losing all the time to Bret and it just brought his rise to fame higher. And Bret loves winning so it was a match made in heaven for both.

HHH just didn't do it for me. Cannot remember a single wow moment with him. Nope there was a genuineness when guys talked and created their own promos that was lost when they wrote for guys

In reference to Vince's "I totally disagree" line to JR after their match at SS I want to think that Vince misunderstood or didn't hear Jim properly cause say what you want about Vince back when he was the announcer he played the babyface announcer to a T so that was totally uncharasteric of him. For those that don't know what they are referencing to set the situation and to paraphrase, after Bret beat Austin it was announced that he would be facing the winner of the Sid/HBK match at the next PPV. Before the Sid/HBK match JR says something to the effect that "Austin gave Bret everything he had but Bret showed that he had no ring rust, and if he wrestles this same way next month I think he can beat either Sid or HBK" to which Vince replied "I totally disagree."
Keep in mind JR was still sorta playing the heel announcer at this point(this was shortly after he debuted the fake Razor and Diesel) so I think Vince may have thought he said Bret HAS ring rust and COULDNT beat either guy and thats why he said he totally disagrees. It would just be out of character of the Vince McMahon face announcer and promoter for that matter to say he disagreed that a top babyface who was main eventing his next PPV wasn't capable of winning the championship.

Steve Austin made Bret Hart not the other way around, the crowds naturally gravitated to Austin and booed the hell out of Bret. We never liked him, only Canadian and Euro marks liked Bret. His career was so bad WWF almost went bankrupt when he was the main champion.
funny how the business stopped 'being down' once Bret Hart was out of the picture lol

    • @ericchurch9835

bullshit ! dude bret hart hand picked austin to work with if it wasn't for his match at SS MSG or his submission match at WM 13 austin's career goes no where he'd probably have been a mechanic his whole career. and austin's popularity didn't really hit it's stride until after austin got dumped on his head at summerslam 1997 those 3 months of austin raising hell and stunning people and just attacking everybody was how he entertained the fans and that 3 month lay up allowed him to further develop his character outside the ring. so yes bret hart made austin a main eventer.
