  • Isolated Drum Tracks from the (October) 2002 Good Mourning Demos.
    Good Mourning is one of the only Alkaline Trio recording sessions I don't have the multitracks for, thankfully the demos we made in our practice space sound pretty damn good, and the drum parts are close to what I played on the album.
    I'm pretty sure this was a three-mic set-up: kick, snare, and one overhead, nothing fancy - a Beta 52, and two SM57s sub-mixed through an Allen & Heath MixWizard into two channels of a first-generation MBox. Despite not knowing what we were doing, these drum tracks sound better than most of the self-recorded demos we made over the years.

    Hey Derek, i expressed my support for you earlier but let me to do it again. I believe that you're an amazing drummer and even better person. I'm drummer as well and I love your drum ideas, fills and your diversity. I wish you all the best and keep in mind that you are my hero.
    Keep up the great work and dont forget about us- posting these amazing tracks or videos from Alkaline Trio. Be safe!

    The dynmaics in this are absolutely amazing. Didnt realise you were doing so much woth the snare during the chorus. The ghost notes are so perfectly executed and the way you're playing the hi hat accents during "final resting place in pieces" on the off beats... 😮 Never noticed that before, its kinda buried a little on the final mix. Awesome stuff Derek

      @dominicmurphy942 Thanks buddy! I really dig that part too! On the album version (and at shows) I added quarter notes on the ride bell in the choruses which made it extra fun to play. You can see it in this video: ruclips.net/video/d8jNrMod-zY/видео.html

    This sounds awesome. I never realized that the drum part was so intricate in the first two choruses. That triplet fill between the kick/snare/tom leading into the second verse is one of your all-time coolest fills, in my opinion!
    This may be a strange place to ask, here in the wild west comments section of RUclips, but... Do you have any plans to get involved in other musical fields, like mixing or production? Tracking drums remotely? Management?! The Internet told me that you are focusing on graphic design. Loving all these videos you are posting in the meantime. Definitely miss you behind the kit. Hope you are doing well!!

    Thanks so much for posting these!! Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I vaguely remember reading on the bloodpact message board back in the day that you weren't crazy about how your drums were mixed on Good Mourning. Am I totally wrong about that? But if that's the case, what didn't you like about them?

    • @DerekGrantMusic
      @DerekGrantMusic  3 месяца назад +7

      @BarryCantrelldesign I don't remember having any issues with the drums on Good Mourning, you might be thinking of Crimson which I (regretfully) mentioned in a video post during the Agony & Irony session. I didn't articulate things will in the video, and it came across completely the wrong way, to the extent that I posted a retraction a day or two later. I had no issues with the overall mix or the way the album turned out, I was frustrated that we spent so much time and effort tracking drums - using several different kits and mic configurations to tailor the sound to each song - and a lot of those nuances got lost in the mix. Looking back, I realize that Jerry and I started out with different ideas about the kind of album we were making, I was thinking spacious, super dynamic, moody and he wanted a more guitar-heavy rock album. He was right, and I should have just trusted him to do what he did best. Jerry was an amazing engineer and producer, and an even better person. I think of him often and wish he was still around. R.I.P.

      @@DerekGrantMusic Well, if it's any consolation, whenever Crimson came out, I think there was an extra video on the disc (or maybe you posted the video of the drum tracking), it was amazing seeing you track each drum individually (Mercy Me) or use different tom configurations (Don't Say You Won't, I think), or small high hats or use a china or a gong or whatever. It really opened my mind to not get locked in to a single way of doing things. I really appreciate you.

      @@DerekGrantMusic If it makes you feel any better, I think it is safe to say that despite your feelings about the nuances getting lost, if you polled all long time fans, I think Crimson would come out on top. No piece of art will ever be perfect in its creator's eyes but you could have fooled us fans 😆 Again, thank you so much for all the insight you have put out there lately.

    Could you upload a higher resolution recording of "I Am Everywhere I Ever Wanna Go" from these demo sessions please? The version that's out there sounds super shitty, but the song is great.

    • @DerekGrantMusic
      @DerekGrantMusic  3 месяца назад +9

      @jonathonherroon6580 The title of the song is actually "So Good To Be Here", it wouldn't be right for me to post something like that without talking to Dan and Matt about it and, with that song in particular, it was never meant to be heard or circulated (like all of the demos for Good Mourning) and I doubt it will ever be officially released. However, I might post the drum track for it because it's pretty insane! Sorry to be Debbie Downer!

      @jonathonherroon6580 We had a pretty good idea of how the demos got out, but I won't name names. We tried to be vigilant about people hearing the songs before the album came out, I think we only gave the demos to two or three people, even so, they got posted pretty quickly. We were pretty bummed. I remixed them recently and they sound amazing, hopefully they'll get an official release at some point.
