Tricks for using cable stakes while trapping

  • Cable stakes, or earth anchors, are a great way to anchor your traps. They are light weight, some are disposable, others reusable, can be attached to your traps beforehand, its my preferred method for staking my traps. But there are some things that can get hung up or slow you down, especially as you get some wear on your stakes, and more specifically your driver. With drivers that are inserted into the stake, watch for mushrooming on the end that can cause the driver to get hung in the stake. Its also important to make sure you are using the stake correctly, to avoid any malfunctions. For more on trapping visit www.everythingtrapping.com and www.coyotetrappingschool.com

    Drags work great but there must be a lot of brush and such to hang them up, if not they will run into the next state!

    I used miserable rebar for decades and always hated it! I only use the Wolf Points from Minnesota Trapline products now. I just buy the 100 point bags and build my own cutting my 5/64 cable that I use on all my snares at 20 inches. Me and one of my sons tried pulling one out and it didn't move even one inch! Have never lost a dog yet you here in Idaho! I don't use no damn swivel at all.

      Those wolf fangs are hard to beat, that's mostly what I use now, along with trying out some drags

    Do you have a video for a step down set?

      My dirthole video (ruclips.net/video/FK6I8vpvugo/видео.html) isn't a big step down set but most of my sets have a slight step down. For a bigger step down you can just dig a deeper hole to bed the trap in.

    Do you ever use drags?? I use Wolfgang disposables and really like them,, just thinking a drag system would even be faster

      I have very limited experience with drags. I started experimenting with them last year and will continue this year. They are faster, and make remakes a breeze, of course you need brush nearby for them to tangle in or else you'll spend all the time you saved searching for your catch!

    Todays price for a cable stake is $9?? The estimate for coyote this year varies from $10 to $100. Dyeing, waxing, setting, skinning, fleshing, stretching, drying/turning are labor intensive. Coyote pelts will rot quicker than any other when not handled properly. In the 70s all we used for stakes was a 3/8" x 16" rod with a 2" bent diamond shaped point and a washer welded to the top. I used nothing bigger than a #2 double coil; caught some large coyotes and never had a pull-out.??

    I am going to make a bunch of those pogo anchors where can I buy the heavy duty j hooks

      Minnesota Trapline Products, or most trapping supply dealers carry the HD j hooks. For 1 time use the standard J hooks would probably work fine too

      Pogo here...We have 18 dealers... Check with your favorite, and beware of imitations. Great video by the way. Use the bullet stake in the mean rocky ground. Adjust your driver length and washers size according to the soil where you live. GOO TRAPPING!

    How can i get cable stakes out of the ground?

    • @coyotetrappingschool1575
      @coyotetrappingschool1575  6 лет назад

      Couple of ways, but they may not be easy depending on how hard your ground is. Most trapping supply houses sell stake pullers, its a long T shaped piece of metal with a hook near one end and you hook it to the trap chain and lever the stake up. Works pretty good in sandy soil. You can also use a long skinny shovel, sharp-shooter/tile spade and push it in right beside the stake as deep as you can then pull the stake up, again helps to have loose soil. Lastly they make some auger bits that go on a drill for digging dirtholes, you can run it down beside the stake and loosen the dirt up and pull it out

    Do you have to clean and dye anchors? Boil in baking soda? Also, do your anchors need to take on a coat of rust before they will dye?

    • @coyotetrappingschool1575
      @coyotetrappingschool1575  5 лет назад

      No, that isn't necessary for anchors, I do like to dip mine just to make sure they are clean but you don't really have to. I wouldn't set them on top of your gas can in your shed but they don't have to be dyed, but it isn't hard to throw them in the pot with your traps as they are dying

      Thank you for your time. I have no mentor and it seems like no one does this in my area. I have all the books you could want, but it doesn't replace experience.
