Takes place in the failed to save Mario timeline, like Alone. Luigi failed to save Mario, but rather than still trying to seek King Boo and right his wrong, he gave up and ran away. However this was actually all a test designed to help Luigi face his fears created by Mario. Finding out his brother just gave up and ran away hurt him deeply and when Luigi, wallowing in his depression and loneliness wandered back into the mansion, Mario was there to greet him looking rather nonplussed...
