    Nice. My first sled, in '85, was a cherry 1980 300 Enticer. My buddy bought a new Phazer, the dealer offered him $400 trade-in on the 300, so he sold it to me for that $400. My next three were recovery projects like this: Arctic Cat ElTigre 500 free-air, 340 Panther, and a SkiDoo Olympique 340. Good times!

    I love those old Yamaha's I got one for free it was a 340 Deluxe it had the tach and speedo on it the engine was seize up I took the plugs out and filled it with oil and let it sit over night went out the next day and it would not turn so put a socket on the bolt on the crank and a big bar and started to slowly break it loose it creaked and squeaked and finally came loose cleaned the single Mikuni carb up on it got it running and drove the thing all winter long and it ran awesome those things are hard to kill and fast now I own a 1981 Exciter and 2 340 Enticers the 79 I got for free and a 83 Enticer they are reliable fun and fast

    Having no airbox on old 2 strokes make them struggle to run run unless you jet it accordingly, doesn't suck enough fuel in, especially when cold.
    I bought a moped that had no air filter on it and "wouldn't run", put a foam filter and an aerosol can lid over the top of that to choke it a little bit and it runs great now!

      Remember the old early 70s Arctic Cats with the 303 Wankel engines? A buddy had one that we couldn't figure out why it would run for 10 or 15 minutes, then stall, due to vapor lock. We finally took the fan shroud(s) off, because not much air was going in/coming out of them. Turns out a large mouse nest had blocked the cooling air intake, and was causing the engine to run really hot!! Damn engine was pretty rugged, and it ran for years afterwards!!!

I gave up and got a mechanic to look he pulled out oil can and gave a squirt of oil down each cylinder that sealed the rings fixed the compression started first-time after that took 5 min I was happy it started miffed that I didn't think of it. That lesson has stayed with me.

    I got two 1976 moto-sk 440i machines and a twin trailer for free. I was absolutely crazy excited! Was gonna relive my youth!! Got them home....tried to pull .....both engines seized. Everyone told me throw in the towel, they are toast. I decided to give it a go. Wah wah wah waaah. Finally beat the living #&$^# out of those engines to get the pistons out. Put seals and rings and new fuel lines. Cleaned EVERYTHING. got spark but no boom boom. I didn't hone the cylinder walls, so was only getting 60 psi per cylinder. Of course after I reassembled the engines my neighbor finally found his cylinder hone. By that point the thrill was gone and I had too many other projects. I gave up and sold them. So much you reliving my youth.

    I brought an 81' F 100 back from the dead that'd been parked for a number of years. Didn't want to turn over, pulled the plugs, poured Marvel Mystery Oil down the holes, let it sit 24hrs. Got it to crank, poured gas down the carb, got it to fire. Bigger issue now? Have a GL1000 that's been parked for 10yrs, in the open, only under MC covers. Wouldn't even bother if it didn't only have 8k mi on it and I'm the 2nd owner.

    Someone down the line set it right. I work on chainsaws for a living. The seals get hard it lets unmetered air through to the combustion chamber. The snowmobile will scream and you'll be having a blast because they always run better lean. Then whammo. Lego super lean and you're not getting this much oil to the cylinder because you're not getting this much fuel to the cylinder. End of sled. Don't run it again until you've done the test or just pull the motor and go through it. In my humble opinion

    Never try to roll over an old engine before it's properly prepped. Get it in a heated garage, squirt a tablespoon or two of two stroke oil into the cylinders and mix around. let sit overnight. Not Bitchin, just xplainin to those who like to rehab old sleds. Don't start yanking on the recoil. Gently start by carefully rotating the primary clutch. Being very careful can make the difference between getting it easily running or wrecking the cylinders and losing the top end.

    Good job getting the engine going. That said you have alot of work ahead of you! Get that track up in the air and try and spin the secondary clutch by hand. I bought an old sled years ago for next to nothing. Told the guy if I could make it run I'd take It. was stuck out in the Bush and I went out with some tools and fresh fuel and got it running. Was super excited brought it home. I always had dirtbikes and quads boats and everything else. Little did I know unlike almost everything else the engine was just a small part in the whole scheme of things. Suspension was twisted, drive cogs were rotted, chain case seals were dried up and leaky, all the boogie wheels were seized. Sliders were worn through. Track had actually shrunk in length somehow and was too tight. Long story short dropped about 500 bucks in parts on a 100 dollar machine and countless hours replacing all the bearings and seals. Making my own parts. Straiteming out the suspension, new sliders, new clutch and tons of other things. And as well as the engine ran could never get it to ride right. Sold it for 200 and that was that. So cudos for the effort just give the whole driveline a good look over before you start pouring resources into it

      Hey Lucas, thanks for the advice! Not shown in this video was the fact that I did eventually get the back end blocked up and ran the track. That was, of course, after doing just as you suggested moving it by hand to make sure it'd move. It all functioned a lot better than I expected it would after that long.

    GOOD video man,,im a mechanic / cnc toolmaker,machinist myself ,i can appreciate your how to go thru things to check,another piece of advice would be you should disconnect that speaker wire,,thats the wrong OHM wire,,your asking for trouble,,just remove it an snip it square and reconnect it by screwing in clockwise direction .

    • @ZackOfAllTrades
      @ZackOfAllTrades  5 лет назад

      Thanks Joe, I agree that wire's no good. Whole reason it's there though is because for some reason, the actual plug wires are too short. I'll be replacing the coil and wires as soon as I can.

    lift the rear end up (on a jack stand or tree stump/log)and get the track moving and cleared out and
    check the suspension out BEFORE blowing your belt.ive had 10-15 junk sleds so yeah,its recommended by me anyway!!

    Playing with old snowmobiles must bring parts along.
    Glad to see it run, next trip maybe some riding, bring new belt, fuel line and fuel filter must have things. Maybe even a new track chock cable.
    Enjoy the rebuild to get it running.
    Waiting to see the outcome.

    • @ZackOfAllTrades
      @ZackOfAllTrades  5 лет назад

      Thanks a lot Scruffy, you are absolutely right about bringing parts along. After I finished filming this, I replaced all the fuel lines and cleaned the filter. I'm hoping by some luck I can get up there again this winter and do a little more but I'm not super optimistic about that.

    A CV carb will almost never run right without the air box/air filter also. Has something to do with being able to create a little bit of vacuum on that side of the carb. I’m not an expert on them or anything but that’s how it’s worked for me in the past.

    Those Mikuni slide carbs REQUIRE an air filter to provide the correct amount of vacuum to draw the fuel into the system. I own a early 70's Suzuki that has 3 of these on it and it WILL NOT run without the air filter in place.

    Love the speaker wire for the plug wire !! Exhaust wire, thats a classic fix for no springs.

    • @ZackOfAllTrades

      lol yeah gotta do what you gotta do.

    • @VanderburghPrecisionRacecraft
      @VanderburghPrecisionRacecraft 5 лет назад

      I was thinking the opposite lol. You gotta get some new wires or make some out of old wires for something else. Its alright for just trying to get it going, but deffinatly get a weak spark and the insulation isnt thick enough for that kind of current. You'll end up with the spark jumping before it gets to the plug.
