"I don't even know if I'm right about this topic." You're such a humble, good dude Johnny. Thanks for all you do in helping all of us be better fishermen.
My favorite jerkbait is 2" Yo zuri pinns minnow floating (no rattle). I bought it in what ever color I would find in the discounted Yozuri box @ walmart. Never had a preference, just tied them on and worked them fast on 4lbs test mono. Owned 2 Cotton Cordell cranks that worked when my hand got tired. Then I started buying "colors"...in stuff I didn't even use- spoons, jigs, spinners, soft plastics, etc. What I learned: the more tackle I began to carry, the less effective I became and my catch ratio went down. I was constantly switching to "something else cause this ain't working". I was wasting time tying and retying, carrying 4 rods, and a backpack full of new tackle close to 30-40lbs. to bank fish😂 Went back to the basics and bought me a fanny pack. Two small cheap boxes and my scale fit nicely. One box jerkbaits and cranks, other has soft plastics and few hooks/weights. Not color crazy just what ever I have at the time. I'm back to catching hogs and more fish BABYYYY!💯
Your absolutely correct in my opinion. I have learned over the years and thousands of dollars on luhers that all the pretty colors are made for catching fishermen. I'm no pro, but I personally only go with 3-5 basic colors depending on the bait and most cases only 3 colors. Keep up the great info and videos. You sir are an anomaly and a wealth of information.
Almost 10 years ago I, too, decided to simplify my tackle and it has been great. I live in Missouri and primarily fish Ozark lakes. I throw three jigs only.... PB&j, green pumpkin, black & blue. For crankbaits I throw chrome, White, chartreuse, or red. Plastics are primarily watermelon, green pumpkin, black, or white. Greatly simplifies choosing a lure to throw and it DEFINITELY makes shopping for and keeping lures in stock really easy. Thanks kid, get another great video.
I've done good with shad colors, craws and bluegill for crankbaits. White , yellow and bluegill for spinnerbaits. Green pumpkin, black and blue for Jigs and plastics. I think you hit the nail on the head, keep it simple.
Why is it so funny to hear you say this out load?! I’ve been watching you just since the beginning of Mar ‘21 and have been fishing for 50 years - your approach and methods is very impressive - Thanks
Always appreciate the total honesty. Been fishing 25 years and I’ve come to feel the same about color. I keep things really simple now. Saves money and helps me focus on more important factors. I would like to see an unbiased/unsponsored video about quality rods that won’t break the bank. Keep up the good work!
You've got a very good point. Lure color doesn't matter that much, especially when you start looking at all the variants that bait companies offer. Those 10 different green pumpkins with different color flakes aren't for catching fish, they're for catching fishermen. If you're really going to be concerned about it then go catch some bait in your local lake then try to "match the hatch" with the accent colors.
I feel the same way as you Johnny I also truly believe that people do better with another colors solely because they're confident and that makes a big difference
Great insight on color. I couldn’t agree more. The fishing retail business, is to catch anglers and their money more so than fish. Keep the videos coming, thanks you!
Hey Jonny: You have raised a a great conversation topic. I think most people would agree with the logic that "we can't catch a fish that's not there". And when we do catch a fish, we are happy with the bait we used. Do that enough times and the bait becomes a confidence bait for us (regardless of its characteristics). Of course we can't go back in time, but I BELIEVE that had we been using a different bait when we came across those exact fish, and caught them, then we would telling anyone who would listen that it was our confidence bait.
Thanx for an awesome video!!! Love your take an transparency on the subject!!! It definitely can be overwhelming going into the different aisles and seeing ALL the different lure colors.
I'm the same red, green color blind and have noticed that after I simplified my colors to basics, I do just as well as my other friends that use all different colors.
I think your totally correct I couldn’t agree more I think black and blue and white, as well as matching the hatch is the best bet. I don’t think I ever tied on a chartreuse bait in my life
Very intuitive perspective. It has been said many times, a lot of colors and patterns are produced to catch the eye of the fisherman. Marketing. I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
so humble and yet so right with the whole philosophy ! Well done ! that applies to all types of fishing and not only for Bass ;) and I can say it out loud because I'm from Europe :D
Valid points all around. As a fisherman that is also a lure painter I have a tendency run the color spectrum because painting 3 colors gets boring😁. I am learning alot from your videos , especially about offshore fishing, and no mater what color I throw I definitely won't catch anything if they're not there. I would be interested to see your approach to fishing major rivers. Thanks for all your hard work
I think you're right for most days, because all lures change to black after about 6 to 10 feet deep, but I like red, Roll Tide, I use reds a lot in different shades and my son, He likes whites and greens. I find size is more important than color in a lot of the lakes we fish. Great show as Always, Thanks. We fish for Fun. Just my Opinion.
I didnt hear you mention chrome baits which I feel are huge at certain times. There are times on Lanier fishing topwater that chrome is all those spots will target. Great vid.
Thank you for this! I am definitely guilty of having a tackle box with 20 different lipless cranks.....recently I’ve been narrowing down what I’m buying for tackle colors and focusing on tackle that changes the action and then changing how I change the presentation. Will save you more money and catch more fish
I feel like many people are misled, often by the lure companies (like you mentioned) and many other *famous* fishing voices, when they are choosing colors. From my experience, and I'm not saying that I got it all down, the color selections can be selected into three colors: chartreuse, white, bluegill. And when we're talking about crankbaits, somewhere in this mix of these 3 colors, a clear/see-through selection needs to blend in with them as well. Having fished from the MidWest, to the East coast, to the South, and to the West Coast in 3 years, I have learned which color is effective work and isn't as effective from one region to another, thus concluding in these three colors. Color selection makes a big a difference because it will affect the way how a fish will react to your lure. For example, there's no way that I will be throwing a bright Chartreuse in an ultra-clear body of water again. I've learned my lesson on that as I tried all my might (for an hour with no success), while my friend just walked up to the spot where I was fishing and caught the 7-lber that I was trying to catch with a simple color change (black & blue- apparently it works in the ultra-clear water in NY!). So yes, locating the fish and understanding the fishery habitat is crucial, but I feel that color selection is also as important in fishing, which people need to be picky about their colors and should limit their color selections down to only a few.
Lures catch more fishermen than fish! That said, I have seen two baits almost identical except for the flake (one red and one gold). For some reason the red flake bait caught more fish drastically, but generally speaking I agree! Good video. #tightlines #BigBassEnergy
Dude... In my opinoon, your opinions rock!! I've been catchin Bass for over 40 years but I admit to getting caught up in tge whole color selection thing. You've taught this old dog a few things! And you bet, I'm honna try that KFC Craw! Lol
Aaron Martens has a great video on gear ratios... He only uses one! I used to have many different gear ratios now I only a few. simplifying this aspect of fishing helps you know how fast your bait is moving because nearly all your reels have the same ratio. I still like a low gear ratio for deep diving cranks and a high gear ratio for slow-moving baits like jigs. Everything else is the same.
Johnny I couldn’t agree with you more about the black max. I’ve been fishing with them since they came up and I think that they hold up with all of the best reels.
I totally agree Jonny. My home lake is always dirty (its fed by Muddy Creek, lol), I practically have to drop a lure on their heads to get a bite. I've noticed that the green and brown based lure colors don't work as well because they blend in with the dirty water color. This makes me use brighter lures and noisier ones as well. In clear water (when I can find it) I feel like the color importance drops drastically. and almost anything can work.
@@0017Bulldog wlure makes a bunch of crank baits in black with a chartreuse stripe on the top. You can find them on eBay for $1.50. I can't vouch for how good they are but heard they are good. I just ordered 1 of each just to see how they are.
I think this is basically true. The main thing is that the fish can see the lure so in some conditions some colors might be a bit more productive than others and in recent years there has been more study into what fish actually see. I think I heard about and also read about a book called "What Fish See" by an optometrist or some such person. Anyway, I haven't read it myself but the article I read about the book in basically concluded the two colors you really need are black and white. In fact I believe they may have said that some colors may actually look the same as white to the fish in some conditions anyway. That said, color can make a difference sometimes but it isn't the end all be all. However, I have had times when I could get hits on a purple Creme Scoundrel in a pond with clear water where I could see the fish hit it. Then I would try a natural nightcrawler color and they don't pay attention to it at all. Then a few days later they will hammer the natural color and ignore the purple one. I suspect this has to do with light conditions but of course I am speculating. I've found that on any given day there is usually more than one way to catch bass and sometimes to get those few extra bites I will try something different. Maybe I catch a few on three different completely different lures. Not all the fish are doing the exact same thing at the same time on a given day so it's okay try something different if for some reason you aren't getting bite but you know there are fish there. That said, if you are catching fish, don't fix what isn't broken.
I can say, that I have see days where we where trolling four lines with #7 Floating Rapala's. They were All the same distance from the boat running the same speed and on the same line diameter. But the fish only hit one color pattern(usually Rainbow or perch). By the end of the day we would be running at least 3 of the four lines on one color.
When i try new baits ill start with 3 color patterns. A craw, shad and bluegill in diving cranks, white, black and ghost in topwaters then gold, silver, white, craw and bluegill in liprss baits. Then if i like the bait ill branch out and get colors i likre to mix in at times
Yes. They did work. Just looked awful for that much $. I saw reds and greens and such for the first time (it was great). It wasn’t life changing for me personally though (no tears or shock). Wish they’d put em in regular glasses for less $.
True on the colors and the newest bait is not necessary either! I won 3 tournaments one year using a white ghost minnow color river runt that was about 30 years old at that time
You are very smart. Probably the kid of some Walmart corporate employees. We do business with Walmart too. You should take me fishing sometimes when i come down there. I have fished beaver lake from the bank a few times, got enough bass for a video, but would love to fish that lake from a boat
So, a recent study video I saw reviels that bass are actually color blind just like some humans are. The colors they see best at greater depth are blues and greens. The latter is better. Which would explain why chartreuse is so effective. Reds disapate deeper than 5 feet. Very interesting. Then I remembered Swindles approach to jig color "There's only two colors- black and brown". Good post. I tend to agree that color is secondary most of the time.
Yep, first and foremost finding the fish, and finding the right bait is paramount. However, I have found color to make a noticeable difference in my local fisheries. Different lakes within a few miles of each other, the fish respond to different colors better. Partly has to do with the clarity of the water. However, even when the clarity of the water is the pretty much the same, the fish respond to some colors better than others in my area. I think the difference in my area, is what the fish are feeding on more regularly and how often they are feeding. The lakes are different in topography and surroundings, so they are likely feeding on different things.
Where was this video thousands of dollars ago 😂😂😂. How am I just now seeing this? Quick question, what are your thoughts on chrome/ultra flashy colors vs just white? Great video as always!
Finally someone has the boys to say it, color doesn't matter in general. Keep it stupid simple. Black and blue in dirty or low light, and green pumpkin in clearer water for me. Hard baits I got 3, shad, craw, and chartreuse. I catch fish year round in every type of water. The only time I change is when I'm on a school of fish and start catching them then it shuts off I'll change it up and start back catching them
The other day I was wearing them out on a brown and green jig. I larger fish broke my line(because I forgot I retie like an idiot). It was my last jig that color. I had to resort to a black and blue jig. Didn't get a jig bite the rest of the evening.
Not trying to be a jerk, just expressing an observation. For a color blind person, that is a very interesting picture behind your left shoulder. As far as the video, couldn't agree with you more. 👍
You're even rollin with the black and blue shirt. Be careful. Jaws might jump out and try to rip your head off. 😂 Great info. My starting crankbait is always a rapala live pumpkin seed.
I believe that each fisherman has to have confidence in what they are throwing. Good video. Since I am a Patron member, what happens if I miss your Live Stream on Nov 12? How is that going to work?
Mmmmm.... Recently on a visit in Oklahoma, I tried silver spoon, cast, cast, cast, cast, cast and more, and more casts... No fish... Then I tried the same spoon in half silver half blue, no use, no fish... I was throwing in the same overall place. Past Grand lake dam, Neosho river, there is a cove, big cove but small turbulent entrance from the river into that cove. There is also huge tree fallen right onto that cove "mouth" the entrance basically, from the river into the cove. So I was concentrating on the entrance. The above said spoons did nothing, regardless of times thrown. Then I tried bloody chartreuse, the chartreuse, and with blood color partially on the spoon. White bass hit it, largemouth bass hit it, smallmouth bass hit it, catfish hit it, it was biting great! Back to silver, silver-blue, and nothing. So color does matter, if not every time, but definitely often enough. Also brass spinner double bladed was getting very good bite. So, I am not disputing anything, just gave you pure experience example
White, Silver and Yellow will pretty much get you ANYWHERE you want to be...for YEARS, I was a 'rooster tail' supporter, SOLELY. I found if I carried a small, medium and large rooster tail in white or silver, and a yellow (so, you're talking 6-lures, total), you could wade a creek for crappie, black perch or drop off in a smallmouth hole or a largemouth lake...and catch ALL YOU WANTED. Over time, I added the idea that a 'popper' would stir catatonic Bass up better, but still see those 'multi-thousand-dollar' tackle boxes as nothing but 'payola black-holes' for those who don't fish enough to know better...PUT YOUR MONEY IN YOUR BOAT PURCHASE, not your tackle box!!!
In my opinion, there are 3 things to be concerned about with color. They have to be able to see it in dirty water and it has to look natural in clear water. Most importantly, there are always exceptions to these rules.
Your absolutely 100% correct in my opinion. I believe lure colors are made to sell more baits not catch more fish.
4 года назад
Tell you something else about color... fishing line color! My buddy and I fished the same lure, he caught 8 to my 1, the only difference was line color. When I changed to his color, then we were catching fish about the same pace. Just an experience I wanted to share with you all.
I hear all the time that one guy slammed the bass and the other caught none because of color. These guys don't take into consideration the speed of retrieve, pound test line, rod action, angles etc. Agree 100% that lure color is way down in importance. Fisherman always think there is a Holy Grail in a new color. Usually doesn't happen.
That was the 1st time i actually understood what color blindness actually entailed. As in never could I wrap my brain around exactly what could or couldnt be seen that was a perfect example. What if fish are as color blind as U? Not hating just saying. When I was buying crankbaits at cabelas couple weeks ago and the guy saw me staring of at all the different colors and he grabbed some off the shelf held it up in the air to show me the bottom of it and then said 90% of the time thats all the fish see the most of the color on the lures are for the person buying them not the fish.
Johnny, I've always wondered this, noticing a few catches in this video were on a road buzz, but what is the buzz you use for the road buzz setup? Purchased a kvd toad buzz and tipped it with a zoom horny toad and noticed it doesnt run true. It tries to run off to one side or the other.
"der ner nerr nerr nerrr...Gooo Johnny, Go-Go!...der ner nerr nerr nerrr...Gooo Jonnny, Go-Go-Go!...der ner nerr nerr nerrr....Johnny IS GOOD...He BE Reallll GOOD! Hot Damn!" (da Remix)
There is a guy that is on RUclips who makes “lures” ou to of all sorts of things , including a 1”x1” square piece of wood , raw wood color - and he caught bass in the video! Hah
Lure color makes ALL the difference in the world!!!! Some people can't see the same colors as others, the lure matters also, guys killing them right in front of you and you grab one of the plastic worms they had, and start catching them, then you get the picture! Or, you start catching them, and then, your partner switches to same color you have and he starts catching them, that is proof! Seen it over and over for 50+ years. Just saying, that's why you want tons of all kinds of lures, cause if you don't have it, you are out.

I think you pretty much nailed it! Thank you for sharing your insights. Love the channel
Keep up these types of videos. Great content....
True on the colors and the newest bait is not necessary either! I won 3 tournaments one year using a white ghost minnow color river runt that was about 30 years old at that time
this video is gonna save somebody alot of money
Love it. I will follow this model!
Great video! Keep up the great tips and fine work! One small tip to improve viewership: keep your intro disclaimer
You are very smart. Probably the kid of some Walmart corporate employees. We do business with Walmart too. You should take me fishing sometimes when i come down there. I have fished beaver lake from the bank a few times, got enough bass for a video, but would love to fish that lake from a boat
Kind of a color question. How do you feel about color of blades or color of flash of blades ie black, stainless, gold or silver red or chartreuse
Such good advice!
Thanks!
Finally someone has the boys to say it, color doesn't matter in general. Keep it stupid simple. Black and blue in dirty or low light, and green pumpkin in clearer water for me. Hard baits I got 3, shad, craw, and chartreuse. I catch fish year round in every type of water. The only time I change is when I'm on a school of fish and start catching them then it shuts off I'll change it up and start back catching them
Thanks for the info.
The other day I was wearing them out on a brown and green jig. I larger fish broke my line(because I forgot I retie like an idiot). It was my last jig that color. I had to resort to a black and blue jig. Didn't get a jig bite the rest of the evening.
Another great 🎣 video....
In my opinion / thank you for Sharing !
U r so awesomely smart! Also would like to tell u that u remind me of Carl Jocumsen!Awesome and informative video! 👍👌Also ur RIGHT ON!
Hey man you really give some amazing content. Do you take people out fishing? Do you have a video on how to find fish without electronics?
So true
Not trying to be a jerk, just expressing an observation. For a color blind person, that is a very interesting picture behind your left shoulder. As far as the video, couldn't agree with you more. 👍
That was a nice TOAD off that buzz bate. What exactly was that?
Good video thanks
Jonny do you still use the strike king football jigs or have you found another brand you favor more. Thanks
I plan on recording it and sending out a link to a private RUclips video of the stream to all Patreon Members!
Fish the Moment Thanks
I find that white has been a good choice.
Can fish even see colors? It might not even matter what we use. Thank you once again for a great video.
I think you did a great job, if people good if they be respectful 👊👊👍
KFC craw lol! Well played
🤘🏻
Truth...
Johnny,
I've always wondered this, noticing a few catches in this video were on a road buzz, but what is the buzz you use for the road buzz setup? Purchased a kvd toad buzz and tipped it with a zoom horny toad and noticed it doesnt run true. It tries to run off to one side or the other.
"der ner nerr nerr nerrr...Gooo Johnny, Go-Go!...der ner nerr nerr nerrr...Gooo Jonnny, Go-Go-Go!...der ner nerr nerr nerrr....Johnny IS GOOD...He BE Reallll GOOD! Hot Damn!" (da Remix)
SMH but lol
Tell it like it is Jonny. There are so many lures designed to catch more fishermen than fish! Kentucky Fried Craw ... LOL
2 video in a row you mentioned KFC. GO GET KFC !!!!!!!!🍗🐓
You only need 3.. Crawfish, shad, bream...done!
KFC craw 😂😂
