BREAKING DOWN in our School Bus Conversion | A Story by Bona Fide Bus

  • The highs and the lows. We arrived at Mt. Bachelor feeling like we were on the top of the world following our Highway 1 trip. A long time dream of ours to ride this mountain, the stoke was high.
After our first day, we went to move the bus and were met with a horrific sound. Find out what went down (and how stir crazy we get) as we are broken down for 12 days in Oregon and live in a shop for over a week...
Huge shoutout to Cory for letting us stay in the shop.
    ----------------------
PSA FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH 6.0L SKOOLIES:
Bulletproof them if you can. This is inevitable - either your EGR (like us) or Oil Cooler WILL go bad. Shortly after this experience, our Water Pump went out as well. Doing these preventative measures will almost ensure you don't get caught in a situation like this or worse. Thankfully we were in a public place for our breakdown. Safe travels - learn from us lol.

You two are awesome!! You seem to take that whole terrible ordeal so well. Always so funny. Made me laugh so hard especially when you guys were going stir crazy waiting for the tow truck to arrive, " omg it no longer has a face", talking Eric out of a tattoo, making fun of the bike tires. 🤣🤣 Also So happy to hear about all the nice helping people. Thank you for Sharing your stories ❤ you make my heart smile with every video you post.
    PS, Issac is awesome too!!

But yes we tried to make the best of it and everyone who helped us along the way are AMAZING. Issac is the 💣 thanks for the comment Hugh!

I am a mechanic by trade and live in Oregon coastal area... and it is a tough ... gig. Being a shop owner I could relate to the groundhog day ... over and over I had a car for 9 weeks and it was driving me nuts.. 1952 Cadillac .. I hated it... but made though it.

I think it's cool that the bus decided to break down in a parking lot instead of the side of the road... And waited until you'd already hit the slopes! It sounded like the starter wasn't fully engaging it's bendix... Either starter or battery tired. Writing this before the end. I'll see if I'm right based on what it sounded like.

    • @allmomomosthomebus3895
      @allmomomosthomebus3895 2 года назад +1

I was incorrect. Emissions crap complicates engines. That's why I bought a 2000 bus... Before 2005 school buses were simpler from that perspective.

Great Advice to Bullet Proof a 6.0 and a 6.4 as well. Bulletproofing also entails head studding the block at some point so you don't blow head gaskets. Hopefully you consider a cheap effective Chinese Diesel Heater as a back up heat source for these type scenarios. Also for Peace of Mind, upgrade your AAA Coverage to cover a 200 Mile Tow. If it's registered as an RV, I'd tell them it's a Class C Motorhome to avoid that "COMMERCIAL VEHICLE" rate too.

    • @bonafideoutside

Thank you for portraying all encompassing buslife rather than just the 'puppies and rainbows' approach. It was very interesting to see firsthand what the issues with that particular engine are and why the cost of fixing it is what it is. Glad to see that you kept a positive attitude and persevered through the hard times. It does make the great times that much sweeter.

Love your video. And from bad experiences we learn as well.
If posible you guys can make another video with more information about the AAA coverage you had. And the upgrade.
Also the difference on costs having the school bus register as an Rv or a comercial vehicle.
I'm planing on building my own and that will help me allot on the decision of the type of buss or vehicle to choose.
Thanks again for the sharing and hope to see you on the road soon.
Please help me with that info.
    Thanks also to SKOOLIANA.

Thank you so much! We have the bus titled and insured as an RV which can be tricky to do. We got a little lucky I think. In general I believe having it titled as an RV is much cheaper than a commercial vehicle but it varies from state to state. You just have to do research and call around to different companies. Pretty sure if you can prove you have adequate plumbing, kitchen area, and sleeping quarters you can title just about anything as an RV. Just have to research your specific states rules! Cheers and good luck!
