That was an awesome video. Nice job! I think i found turkey tail growing on a fallen tree in tge woods behind my house. But im not sure. Is there a sneaky lookalike?

Thank you Valen! Im soo glad you enjoyed it! 💚
🍄 There are several mushrooms that resemble turkey tail mushrooms (Trametes versicolor) in appearance. Here are a few look-alikes to be aware of:
False turkey tail (Stereum ostrea): This mushroom closely resembles turkey tail in color and shape, but it lacks the characteristic pores found on the underside of true turkey tail mushrooms. False turkey tail has a smooth, crust-like surface.
Artist's conk (Ganoderma applanatum): While not identical to turkey tail, artist's conk has a similar fan-shaped growth pattern and concentric rings. It is typically larger and has a brown upper surface with white or cream-colored pores underneath.
Thin waxy cap (Hygrocybe ceracea): This mushroom shares a similar color palette with turkey tail, featuring shades of brown, tan, and cream. However, the thin waxy cap has a completely different structure, forming a convex or bell-shaped cap with gills.
Rusty gilled polypore (Gloeophyllum sepiarium): Although the rusty gilled polypore doesn't have the characteristic turkey tail appearance, it can be mistaken for young or decaying turkey tail mushrooms. It has a thin, leathery cap and rusty brown gills on the underside.
False tinder fungus (Phellinus igniarius): This polypore mushroom has a dark, woody appearance similar to turkey tail mushrooms. However, false tinder fungus lacks the vibrant colors and layered pattern of turkey tail, and it tends to have a thicker and more irregular shape.
It's important to note that while some look-alikes may share certain visual similarities with turkey tail mushrooms, they may have distinct differences in terms of growth pattern, spore color, or other characteristics.
🔎 How to Identify Turkey Tail Mushroom specifically:
Appearance: Turkey tail mushrooms have a fan-shaped or semicircular growth pattern, resembling the fanned-out tail feathers of a turkey, hence their name. They are typically small and thin, with a diameter of 1-8 cm. The upper surface of the caps displays a wide range of colors, including shades of brown, tan, white, black, orange, and blue, arranged in distinct concentric rings or zones. The underside of the caps is porous and has tiny, closely spaced pores.
Texture: The caps of turkey tail mushrooms are tough and leathery, resembling a thin piece of flexible wood. The texture is often fuzzy or velvety to the touch.
Patterns: One of the most distinctive features of turkey tail mushrooms is the intricate and colorful pattern on the upper surface of the caps. The concentric rings or zones vary in color and can form unique combinations, resembling an artist's palette. The patterns can include shades of brown, tan, white, black, orange, and blue, often arranged in alternating bands.
Size and Growth: Turkey tail mushrooms are typically small and attached to wood, such as logs, branches, or stumps. They can form overlapping clusters, and their shape can vary from semicircular to irregular depending on the available substrate.
Underside: Turkey tail has a white underside with small holes for spores, and does not have gills like a conventional mushroom.
Spore Print: To obtain a spore print, gently remove a mature mushroom cap and place it, pore-side down, on a piece of paper or glass. Cover it with a bowl or cup to create a humid environment and leave it undisturbed for several hours or overnight. After this time, carefully lift the cap, and you should see a spore print of white or creamy color. This can help confirm the identification.
Habitat: Turkey tail mushrooms are found worldwide and are particularly common in forests. They are saprophytic, meaning they obtain nutrients from decaying organic matter, especially dead wood, logs, and stumps.
      Hope that helps Valen! 😁

Turkey tail definitely has a smell, it’s almost a medicinal scent as I like to call it. It’s not noticeable until the mushroom is cut or picked from its host wood. Great video on one of my fav fungi thanks!
