    The plane door is like a plug in a socket, the pressure inside the plane forces it hard into the socket, sealing it. In order to open the door, it needs to be pulled forward and lifted up on a hinge mechanism. At full pressure it isn't possible to pull the door forward into the cabin and lift it, however at the lower cabin pressure on approaching landing or just after take off it is possible (though significant strength is required) to open the door

    • @the13th_empire34
      @the13th_empire34 Год назад +2

      I’d say closer to a drain plug in a sink or bath tub but yes this is why the door can’t open.

      all I mean is, I've talked to friends in longterm relationships and they've always acted like it should be easy as hell, a piece of piss, just meet on apps and go on dates with strangers etc. then those same people become single and start trying the apps and they realise what its actually like. your idea of how things should be dissolves quite quick. until you try it, you really don't know the game.

    Pyrion definitely didn't pay attention to the video about plane doors... the pilot didn't intentionally lie about being able to open the door, it was that he hadn't factored in the possibility of someone trying to open it at very low altitude which is the only time it is possible.

    I fly a Boeing 777 for a living, if you’ve any plane questions I can do my best for you. The doors are plug doors, seated in a socket under cabin pressure. On the 777 the aircraft depressurizes on touch down, not before. If the differential pressure between inside and outside is small enough there’s nothing to stop the door being opened. Different aircraft will do it differently.

    They probably know this already, but I'll say it anyway:
    Bad news: the people in the sub are mega-dead.
    "Good" news: Current evidence indicate that there was a catastrophic breach and implosion (probably from the glass, which was not graded for even 1/3 of their intended depth), which means the people on bord *might* have heard a pop or sudden cracking sound before they were instantly killed by either the pressure difference or the sheer force of the water. The controller seemingly survived though, if pictures are to be believed.

      There's a lot of different reasons to find it interesting, but I assume you're talking about an empathetic standpoint. Like, who gives a shit they died, not necessarily who gives a shit about the process or details involved. Apologies if my assumption is incorrect.
      I don't really need empathy to feel terrible for them. Most humans who die, really. Nearly every human alive is loved by somebody, even if they aren't aware. Is each individual loss not a tragedy? Think about how central your life seems. Everything is happening to and around you. And then one day that just ends. Sometimes it ends unexpectedly, sometimes unavoidable, and sometimes it happens for such a dumb, stupid reason that you want to denigrate the people. And sometimes you do.
      But it *is* a tragedy, and I for one give a shit. I'm told now they probably didn't know what was going on, and their death was so swift as to be basically instantaneous. But all I can imagine is being that 19 year old, just starting to get my shit together, going to college and building your life. And then your father gives you a gift, and you are sealed into a tin and sent underwater. Do you think he thought of his mother? Of friends, perhaps extended family as that door sealed? I do. I wonder if he thought, as the door sealed, whether he'd ever see them again. I doubt he actually thought he'd die. And now everything he is, everything he may one day have been, is gone. One bad decision.
      I realize you really weren't asking a question, so sorry for that, but I felt compelled to say that I care, and I'm sure many think similarly.

    The truth is basically always better than a lie. There are very rare exceptions, but I can't imagine that any of them have to do with safety. People constantly do stupid things to try to prove they can't be done. If you don't want people to do a dangerous thing, make a huge deal about how dangerous it is. Don't tell them that nothing will happen, because that tells them it's safe to try. Besides, it's incredibly arrogant to think you're the one who gets to decide which truth should be hidden.
    I see that someone said the guy didn't lie, he just hadn't considered this particular possibility, which sounds reasonable. But people lie about things like this all the time, and I feel as strongly as Lewis does. Accurate information is one of the most important and powerful things in the world. • @KerryBenton
      @KerryBenton Год назад +8

      I dunno about the bacteria, but the part about OceanGate seems mighty questionable. According to all the most recent reporting, the CEO was a negligent, arrogant ass who consistently undermined, rejected and demeaned legitimate safety concerns on the basis of creating a new business opportunity. When it imploded, there was one legitimate explorer on board (Paul-Henri Nargeolet) and he arguably knew better but was in the "eh, fuck it" stage of his life it seems. The other passengers, oh, sorry "mission specialists" for legal reasons, were aforementioned dickhead CEO Stockton Rush, two business men, and the 19 year old son of one of the latter, who was terrified of the thing, but did it for his dad. If there's any tragedy here, it's that poor kid who turns out to have been the most sensible of them.
      At this point it seems clear that they were using a deeply flawed vessel, utterly unfit for task, and willfully endangered everyone who ever got in the thing thru total disregard for proper engineering and safety protocols. Pyrion got it just right... *hubris* got all of them killed.
      If folks want to do science down around the Titanic, great! Do it in a properly designed vessel, certified for the depth, made by engineers who give a fuck, not a shoddy deathtrap built by some "MOVE FAST AND BREAK THINGS! DISRUPT OLD FASHIONED NOTIONS OF SAFETY!" business-prick.

      @@KerryBenton explorers take risks, as is the spirit of exploration. News media has been particularly hyperbolic about the whole thing, don't you think? They tend to be in times like this. It's quite easy to talk about a man after he's gone. I'm not here to defend the man at all I'm just suggesting other possibilities. I think the characterization he was purely a rich asshole is probably a bit reductive, and it's really easy to call someone a stupid asshole _after_ they blow up in a submersible.
      I don't disagree that hubris led to their demise, as will end many other fates. I just wanted to point out that they were at least down there doing science and literally only there for the sake of science. If they could have funded the project more easily without rich people they would have I'm sure they would have.
