"Stay" is one of my favorite tracks from Bowie's vast discography.
I appreciate the different intonations in Bowie's voice. the verses are taken on a confident tone while the chorus is more desperate. I really like the contrast.

Definitely a personal favorite David Bowie song. As you mention his lyric delivery is unique, it comes like a person in the midst of trying to put a sentence together thinking of what to say and ecpress as if he's practicing in front of a mirror, not so much lackadaisical, but quite uncertain and awkward while the music's groove is demanding he get it right and he finally does with one word, Stay. Wicked good.
The fact that he doesn't remember making this masterpiece is hilarious. The musicianship is stellar.

JP, if you are interested there is a great live performance of this song on RUclips from the Dinah Shore Show in '76. The band will blow you away & David looks stunningly beautiful in spite of his cocaine use of the time. He was also promoting his movie The Man who Fell to Earth along with Candy Clark. The entire show (also available) is another of those odd moments captured on tape with a very unique line-up of celebrities ( they were ALL looking at him like he was some exotic being from another planet!). His discomfort is palpable which drew me in even more at the time. I think you would find it weirdly interesting & amazing.

Bowie! pure genius in every phase of his career
I went to the. 1976 Nassau Coliseum show... Was My first concert.
Such a great track. The studio musicians went above & beyond on this one.
E Slick is lead guitar , rhythm guitarist Carlos Alomar
The combination of Carlos Alomar on that jagged funk rhythm guitar and Earl Slick on the screaming lead guitar really works well together on this track. And the bass and drums are stellar. The musicianship on this song is up there with Steely Dan, but here we don't have that super-shiny over-produced sound of the Dan. I like the rough but thick production style Bowie used on this album.
Bowie is just a very, very deep rabbit hole. Some of my favorite albums are Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Station to Station (my favorite), Low, Scary Monsters ..., Let's Dance. He was a virtual catalog of rock, R & B, blues, soul, and endless visual drama.

Adrian Belew on guitar. He played with Zappa the Talking heads and most notably, King Crimson as well.

If you're still deciding on the next Bowie album to dive into, I highly recommend 2002's "Heathen".
Totally agree. Listen to it a lot. B-sides are great too. Shadow Man and Conversation Piece remakes (Toy album?)are awesome. Slow Burn with Pete Townsend’s solo is the best I heard Pete sound in awhile. Whammy bar fun.
That's his last good album, in my opinion. The songs were strong and his voice sounded the best it had since "Black Tie White Noise".
Too bad it all went tits up on "Reality". It had a couple of decent songs, but overall, it was bloody awful. And I didn't like "Blackstar" either, even though I wanted to.

The track I go to most after the title track. I just love the production of the drums and bass in this. So satisfying with some good headphones. That snare sound is so chunky.

The performance on the live album Stage is predominantly awesome (as is the entire album). It made me appreciate this song even more. Comparing Bowie's vocals with Joni Mitchell is brilliant. I had never made that connection before. Thanks!
I caught this tour in Detroit in 76'.....my brother smuggled in a 35mm with zoom and took some great shots of Bowie. This band was fantastic....so tight! He was dressed in black and white while the stage had no colored lights - only bright white light. Never seen anything like it.
Bowie. "After All" My favorite song
I have more than a thousand CDs covering a broad spectrum of genres (rock, jazz, R&B, blues, country, big band, classical, soundtracks, show tunes, world) and I used to have two thousand records (of all speeds and varieties of genre), and yet, I still have never had enough music in my possession. For instance, of Bowie's twenty-seven studio albums (if you count Tin Machine and Tin Machine II), I only have six, and a best of compilation. I had never heard Stay before today, and man what a great tune! Looks like Station to Station will be a near future acquisition. Keep up the stellar work! Looking forward to hearing your reaction to City Boy...
The first of Bowie's 2 great guitar workouts. The second is "Look Back in Anger" on the "Lodger" album. And that is the better of the two.
But this one's all right, I guess. The real highlight is the next song, however. "Wild is the Wind" may be a cover, but Bowie's version is definitive and a masterpiece.

Allright I guess :) It's pure genius. Most artists would love to have created one track of this calibre in their lives, Bowie created dozens on 'em.
Saw him do this on his 'Sound + Vision' tour in '90 and Adrian Belew just tore it up! And Mssr. Bowie had some very tasty dance steps, if I recall right.
I can't wait for you to do the next song on the album, also the last song, "Wild Is The Wind". One of my favorite songs of all time.

Great song and a wonderful album that leads us into the groundbreaking innovative four albums that are to follow.. You will never be disappointed by Bowie's singing. He just keeps raising the bar, right to the very end.

What a clean and complex masterpiece. I've listened to this song many times and it never gets old, the structure and arraignment is spot on,. Just a great piece by Bowie and the band.

my favourite bowie song. I love your deep intelligent analysis. There are a lot of reaction video channels on RUclips, but yours is the only one that actually says anything useful. A bit like Rick Beato's channel, though that isn't reaction videos. Thank you for this one. And the Music for Airports one, which I watched before.

The more aggressive guitar is Earl Slick. The janglier guitar is Carlos Alomar. The guitar riffage was previously used in a song written for Young Americans called John, I'm Only Dancing (Again). You probably won't run into that song when you do a Young Americans listen unless you also do the bonus tracks, which you probably should. David was excited to work with John Lennon and dropped multiple songs to replace them with Across the Universe and Fame, so that song and 2 others came out in 1991 with the Rykodisc version.

Outstanding LP
As far as next albums go, I definitely feel Ziggy, Diamond Dogs or Heroes are perfect for you. With Diamond Dogs in particular, doing specific tracks in groups is ideal. Future Legend/Diamond Dogs, Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise), and Big Brother/Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family are intentional pairings and they're meant to be listened to together transitionally. Future Legend and Skeletal Family are intros and outros for the attached songs, and the Sweet Thing Suite is one big musical piece that plays as a single track on several pressings. I think functionally for that reason, Diamond Dogs will be the most interesting album for you.
Great track from my favorite bowie album. Hard to pick a favorite track they are all that good. Enjoying your Bowie deep dive and insightful and thoughtful reviews, btw there's dinah shore show performance of this song worth checking out.

Love the Bowie reactions! Stay was always a showstopper live, Bowie would hold a sustained note on The word stay at the end that seemed to go on forever! You nailed the comparison to Joni Mitchell, they make the words fit into the music, not the other way around...You should try Moonage Daydream, it has epic guitar work from Mick Ronson!

I enjoy hearing this song whenever played but, don’t actively seek it out. Carlos usually is the groove and Slicky the looser accents. Speaking of Slick, I liked his contributions but, there were some bum notes in there, too many for me not to mention them but overall a yummy meaty solo.

You mentioned Joni... I was reading in Tape Op magazine (free btw), an article on producer Larry Klein who was married to, wfi, Joni Mitchell. He mentioned a time they were listening to Earth Wind and Fire, she wasn’t as impressed as him. He asked her what she was listening specifically to in the song. She said mainly vocals and guitar. He said to her to listen to the rhythm section, that’s where the magic was happening. Larry was also a bassist so that’s his focus. Found it interesting, the personal listening focus on songs.
I too tend to gravitate towards the vocals and guitar. This channel helps me listen and enjoy the bass and drums’s contribution.

Tony Kaye assisting with this track . Yes, always cool when you see those types of things pop up in the credits as Tony was the traveling keyboardist for this album tour , didn't actually play on the studio tracks .
Couple other rather famous assists on big Bowie tracks : Space Oddity ( I know you checked out that classic with Manny a while ago ) - Rick Wakeman on the Mellotron . Typical Rick , he hadn't even played a Mellotron to that point but sat down and fiddled with it , figured it out and the rest is sonic history .
Also - a rather unknown guitarist at the time , Stevie Ray Vaughn , played on the Let's Dance album and was slated to tour with Bowie to support the album but things fell apart as Bowie wanted too much control over everything , from how Stevie would move on the stage during certain songs to restricting Stevie from talking to the press about his own upcoming Double Trouble debut album Texas Flood .
Regardless , they made history and the rest was history as Stevie hit the scene and just blew everyone's minds .
Powerful and unique
Great video JP. You pretty much nailed everything that is great about this track. One of my all time favorites by Mr. Bowie. The vocal is great, but what makes it rock is Bowie getting out of the way toward the end and letting the band jam. Check out the live version you mentioned from the 1976 tour. You can find it on the extended version of this album. Then, check out the 1978 live version from the Stage LP, and hear a totally different guitar experience. Both versions sizzle.

This LP is one of his best
Loved that guitar intro, drums and the overall groove. I know there was a period where Nile Rodgers was working with Bowie. I can't help but think he had some influence on this song, due to the funky nature. Nice Choice and reaction.
The Nile Roger collaboration is much later. He produced Let’s dance (1983).

This is my absolute favorite Bowie album. From what I understand, years later he could barely even remember recording it!
Love your analytical approach.... I think this is about becoming more bold but being very reluctant. Stay (a command) still checking if the person is receptive to your message... Bottom line is " I sort of like you LOTS if it is somethng you want to... if not, no biggie ( he said while lying throught his....).

Bowie surprises on every track
Loved your reaction. You insight is spot on. Bowie was completely pissed and coked out when he recorded this album. The guitar is Earl Slick. Bowie and Slick fell out just before the St's tour which is where the cananadian but a guitarist none the the less comes in. The bootleg of the famous Nausa 1976 tour with this song on it is fing awesome

Woo! Great song. Great album. Can't wait until you listen to songs from other albums. If you like David Bowie, I highly recommend Brian Eno. He's great as an individual artist, but he actually did production work on David's "Berlin Trilogy" (Low, Heroes, and Lodger). I recommend the following albums with some individual song recommendations: Another Green World (St. Elmo's Fire, Golden Hours), Here Comes the Warm Jets (Needle In the Camel's Eye, Baby's On Fire), Before and After Science (No One Receiving, King's Lead Hat), and Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) (Burning Airlines Give You So Much More, Third Uncle). It was hard for me to choose just two songs each. I hope you listen. He's great.

If you ever get a chance to view 3 documentaries made by bbc about bowie especially "five years" as this has quite a lot of commentary from denis davis. carlos alomar and earl slick about this specific time . thanks peter

Bowie's funkiest song ever. But this was recorded during his heaviest drug period and the whole album is wild and mostly funky.
Oops, I was mistaken. "Adrian Belew played on Bowie's 1978 world tour as well as 1979's Lodger, the third and final entry in Bowie's fearless "Berlin Trilogy."
Hit the thumbs up before even watching this video. If I could hit it again, I would. Critical foundation for British indie white funk: see Shack Up by A Certain Ratio or Party Hard by Pulp. Live at Nassau with green Stacey Headon on lead g is what you want 70's arena sweat to sound like.
I never really could get into David Bowie, although Space oddity is one of my all Time favorite Songs. But this Song was pretty cool too, maybe I need to give him a Chance again. I really would love to see a reaction from you to the Flower Kings. They are one of the most underrated Progrock Bands outthere with a huge Discography to get into. They have a lot of great epic Longtracks, but for a start, I would suggest The Song: What if god is alone. It’s such an uplifting Song, so I think it’s needed in a year like 2020! Hard to pick a favourite album by Bowie, but Station To Station and Ziggy Stardust are my top two. Can’t pick between them. Pin Ups is awesome, Live In Santa Monica 72 fantastic. It’s all great. He was a true artist and made everyone around him better in terms of their artistic expression.
Fun fact: Bowie has no memory or recollection of the year or so during the recording of this album. It was the height of his Cocaine addiction amongst other things, and the band was pretty smashed most of the time. But the band was killer. The Ziggy lineup is my favourite but this lineup on S 2 S is fire. The

and "Remember the Future", at least the first half.
Hello Justin...David Bowie is certainly a chameleon when it comes to styles through the years as you're hearing lately and will probably soon find out. You've been on a real roll lately (a lot of 2 vids per day)...I know you've got a long list of songs to do on your calendar but please see if you can fit in The band Earth & Fire. The song "Storm & Thunder" will be one you and probably your subscribers will really like. It's a Dutch Prog band from the '70s. They sing in English and their singer Jerney Kaagman has a real nice voice and a somewhat unique delivery. Musicianship is good and the mellotron makes an appearance. Enjoy.

There are some songs/albums (Tin Machine and Tin Machine II, I'm looking at you), which do take a couple of listens to love, but I don't think you will ever not love Bowie's vocals once you get used to the new style.
