Wow,thanks a lot man!!! Was struggling with this exact problem a few days...
It is not intuitive, than you need to change to "shaded with edges". now it works like a charm=))

Is it possible to hide the part of the sub assembly completely so it no longer shows up in the drawing?

This doesn't work for me (SW2022). Switching the display style to "shaded with edges" in the drawing changes the whole model. I did not find a way to achieve what you did here. I guess SW removed the 'bug' that allowed to do this...

Great video! How to show the display states panel? I’m using Solidworks 2018 and it’s not available. I tried to search for it in the display/hide tree items menu with no results.

Display states are found at the bottom of the configuration manager tab in your feature manager tree traditionally it’s the 3rd tab.

will this work for multi-sheet detail parts added to your assembly drawing?

It should though there may be context where it does not work so if you have trouble check with your VAR's tech support team to look at your specific drawing.

Classic Solidworks. Manually override all of the default component display states and then change the drawing view display style so that the model displays correctly! UGH That's not just counter intuitive. That's a bug.
