    Rode on the Ironton Ferry many times growing up in the 70s, since we used to vacation at a Cabin/Campground called Hidden Valley Campgrounds that was up Ferry Road on the top of the hill at Nowland Lake (west of the Ferry). At that time, the restaurant at the Ferry was a Bait&Tackle store. The main reason we crossed was to go to Ye Nyne Olde Holles golf course also on Ferry Road on the east side of the Ferry. Love the Charlevoix area, and hope you visit Castle Farms some time (on M-66 about halfway between the Ferry and Charlevoix).

    I have lived in Michigan my whole life. My father grew up in Plattsburg NY. We vacationed up there every summer when I was a young kid. My Uncle used to drive the Ferry going from upper state NY to Vermont. I even when I was young got to drive it some. This was back in the Late 1960's-early 1970's. Been going thru some of your video's & just subscribed.

    Hey, Guys! I just stumbled upon your channel a couple of weeks ago, and have thoroughly enjoyed what I've seen thus far. Great content, but it's also great to see that the two of you have such fun together!
    BTW, I love what you've done to your new shop! I'm envious. Please treat us to another episode or two revolving around that topic!

    Have been through Ironton a number of times and had no idea this existed! Nice! Also, I got a kick out of your vest: had the same in a three-piece suit back in my office days! 🕴️😎✌️

      If you’re coming up 131, why didn’t you turn at Mancelona to 66? That’s the straight shot through East Jordan. You go past the Ferry to Charlevoix…

    Chuck, I think Ernest Hemingway and his family took the ferry a few times. I recall learning that his uncle had a summer place on the peninsula.

    • @RestlessViking
      @RestlessViking  Год назад +2

      You are correct! His uncle had property on the Ironton side. I debated including that history in the video, but I only had a 3 minute ride! I couldn't fit much more in. 😬 I actually regret not adding that.

    I live on Ferry Rd. now. We are at the other end of the road (Ferry Rd.) you took to get off the ferry if you went all the way to Boyne City…

    I grew up on the west coast of British Columbia Canada where ferries were numerous to cross to islands, inlets and of course to Vancouver Island. Love the rides. Scenery, orcas, seals and fishing boats.

      I'm a Michigander, but my mom is from the Vancouver area, so I have taken the BC Ferries a number of times to visit relatives on Vancouver Island. It is a great place.

    I spent quite a bit of time in that area. Both along the Jordon river valley hunting Morell mushrooms in the spring and at the Community of Christ Park of the pines campground on the Boyne City side of lake Charlevoix. There is some interesting history about the logging that took place in that area. They had a railroad that took the logs down to East Jordon to the sawmill then up to Bellaire where the shipped the lumber out. One of the locomotives is in the Sportsman's park in East Jordin.

    All right! I was wondering if you would get around to this. I lived near Torch Lake Village for years back in the seventies. The ferry was a regular fun jaunt. Things have changed a bit in the last 50 years around there!
    Thank you!

    Hey Chuck!! Im a newer fan of the channel, Grand Rapids native here. I went to college in Sault St Marie, and there has always been a spot i have always been curious on the history on and you would be the guy to ask! There is a very old ship dock that is just next to ashmund bay on the west side. I Explored it my freshman year and swam the waters a few times. Really cool spot, there’s an old building that had a bunch of burnt records from the 1950’s. Any ideas on what was there or what went on there?

    • @RestlessViking
      @RestlessViking  Год назад +1

      I do not know. I know the location, but nothing about the history. At that time, I would imagine the Army Corps was responsible, but I'm not familiar with that history yet. If you have any map of the buildings, send them on, I have some references for some stuff on that side of the Soo.

      @@RestlessViking I searched long and far. I found that it was an old coal dock from the C Reiss coal company. On an old map from 1922, it is listed as the Kelley and Meyer dock. I would love some resources for the Soo. Please don’t stop making content, you are definitely one of the coolest channels i have ever come across. Keep up the amazing work!
