Her mother had had a restaurant in the Philippines, and her food was off the charts delicious. Now I so hungry for that food. Awesome memories, Beryl!

Love this. In journalism school, a million years ago, I needed a local angle on an international story. I chose a local Filipino grocery store of course and snacked on chicharrones with hot pepper vinegar. Love your channel. This is what I should have done for my life’s work. Follow your passion people!
That shrimp paste mix with lemon and chili is a dip for steamed veges like steam okra, eggplant, sweet potato tops, water spinach etc. And that ube everything is luxurious. I tried harvesting ube that my aunt planted back in my island and they taste bland when steamed but yum when in deserts.
I learned so much when Beryl went to the Indian and Russian grocery stores and this was a great episode. Maybe some of the African cuisines? Or maybe a Nordic/Scandi episode?
Tip for Scandi, Sweden they sell squash/dilute/cordial in what Americans call juice boxes, what we call juice cartons. Dont make the mistake I did 🤣 most intense delicious watermelon and raspberry juice ever then I couldnt sleep due to the intense sugar rush 🤣
This is the best introduction video that goes beyond the banana ketchup and ube list. So nice to see you excited and willing to try ingredients and dishes from the grocery store. Looking forward to more videos in this series!
Very cool concept!❤ I can't help wondering about how to shop in Arabic grocery store and which items to recommend to buy. Nagaraya nuts (roasted peanuts coated in a crunchy shell) would've been a good snack for you to pick up too! The adobo and spicy ones were my favorites but sadly I don't live anywhere near a Filipino grocery anymore.
There's only a handful of Filipino grocery stores where I live (Switzerland), so Beryl is lucky she has access in New York! Those flavored vinegars sound so interesting to punch up recipes. I remember that similar "Let's Go Grocery Shopping Together!" video. It was such a fun and heartwarming concept. I wish there was a way to see all the submissions we sent that didn't make the cut, like in a community post or google drive.
What fun! Supermarkets are sacred space to me. Lol. I often have to beg my sweetie to come along because he knows it will be a long trip. I love to read all the labels and try new products from every country.
This is such a great idea! I love going to grocery stores when I'm on vacation to help understand the local culture a bit more. You've inspired me to drag a Filipino friend along to a grocery store to learn about them and the food they grew up eating
Nice that you remembered to get the Lucky Me Pansit Canton with bread. 😊 happy to have shared that recipe with you in your channel. Thanks for featuring Filipino food from a local grocery store. Perfect timing for Filipino American History Month! Phil Am Foods has been a staple in the community for decades. Glad you had so much fun going thru the aisles. Next time, pick up some atchara since you're such a pickle fan. It's pickled papaya and goes great with the silog breakfast dishes, or anything that could use a vinegar contrast. Enjoy your haul! Mabuhay! 🇵🇭
Ahh! This brings me back. I used to take the 7 out to Woodside to shop at Phil-Am back in college to get Ensaymada and some other Pinoy necessities for my cooking. I remember when I first saw the poster for the Jollibee, I counted down the days, and went on opening day. The line wrapped around multiple blocks and there was no way to even get in the door before closing time, so I left and went back a few days later. 😅
Love this vid, when I visit my mom in Queens, I live in California, I love making my way to Phil-Am to shop ingredients so she can cook my favorite Flip food. We've been doing this since the 80's. I also love the Filipino desserts they sell. Thanks for making this video, it makes me feel happy! 😊
Never tried it. But I ate too many coco product it probably tastes the same. Pan de manila is selling coco jams and Maybe I should at least get their smallest one to try.
I take literally everything on this video for granted because to buy all this stuff, all I need to do is go to the nearest store. It's fascinating to see how what's available here and considered as staples are novelties elsewhere.
I just found your channel yesterday and have been binge-watching your videos. My goodness, you are good at this! You are entertaining, informative, and just a lot of fun. You deserve such much larger audience.
LOVE this video! As usual you are amazing Beryl. Please do more of these! I am actually more interested in these than the food delivery. I like seeing the stores
I love this idea! I often feel lost when visiting grocery stores with ingredients I'm not familiar with. I feel like this will give me some confidence when shopping for new ingredients!
Wow... I'm glad that you feature Filipino food and culture through your grocery shopping experience ❤ I'm here in Toronto watching this episode brought back a lot of memories when I was still back in Manila, specially when I go with my mom at either a grocery stores or wet markets. FYI Philippines starts to put Christmas decorations last month September, another thing why I miss being there around the Holidays. Take care and God bless your channel.
She missed the MOST essential item you get at Filipino stores and that dried mango for the ride home. Filipino dried mangos just taste so much better than everywhere else.
When I worked in a big hotel in Philadelphia, one of my coworkers took me to Chinatown there and told me all about the markets there. She advised me where to go and which stores to avoid. It was the first time I saw fresh waterchesnuts. That was 40 years ago! Now I live in Idaho and there really only an Asian market and a bunch of Mexican markets. I do really wish there's a better selection. I always laugh when you say "pick this up at your local Filipino grocery "! Amazon has been a huge part of my shopping since I moved here. Thank you for your great videos.
My family moved from Idaho to the DC area in 1981, so we had the reverse experience. My mother and I would go to little "ethnic" markets and explore, finding things to try. A guide would have been so welcome.
Kopiko maybe Indonesian, but well loved by Filipinos too. I also love Sweet Corn, one of my favorite snacks alongside Snaku and Chippy. Dried Mangos is the best, I also love dried green mangos!!! Tocino and Beef tapa are the best marinated meats for me. I agree with you Beryl, with corned beef. Argentina and Purefoods are the best brands for me. I also crave for a tomato based sardines and I usually love the Red Ligo. Thank you Beryl for this video, shopping grocery is one of my favorite thing to do.
I've said this before in another video, but I just wanna talk about my shopping experience in my community. Where I live (around the Toronto, ON Canada area), it's so culturally diverse that so-called "ethnic" foods are available EVERYWHERE in big-box stores. Not to mention major-chain grocery stores that specifically cater to immigrant communities. At my local Walmart (WALMART!!!), I can buy kare-kare soup base, kalamansi soda, and not just ube halaya, but my FAVORITE brand of ube halaya. If what I'm looking for isn't there, then I can just go to the other major superstore about five minutes away. And that's just for Filipino food! This is true if I feel like doing Jamaican, Greek, Korean, Northern Indian, or Salvadorian grocery hauls, etc. (Though to be honest, I just usually get a mix of everything lol.) The price of this convenience? There are no small mom-and-pop shops ANYWHERE. They wouldn't be able to compete or survive.
The "big two" supermarkets in Aust also carry Asian foods, but alas they are cheapskates & get it made locally under "home brand" labels and it generally tastes terrible. I had an Asian grocery warehouse & stores & the chains were always coming to see what was selling & at what price. Luckily most of my customers were immigrants and wanted the genuine items as did many chefs, so they kept me in business for 26 years, Now I am living in Philippines and have access to all i need and a variety of brands that are made here. I noticed a few on shelves Beryl was around, are not genuine PH brands and some are flavoured for non local taste.
BERYL YO!! I've been trying to get your attention in the common section for a long time, but I think you really need to make a video on foods that are eaten during weddings around the world. I think this would be a very interesting video.
Man I’ve really been sleeping on Filipino food. I’m very familiar with various Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai food and even Malaysian and Indonesian food but for some reason haven’t sought out any Filipino cuisine. This video has convinced me to change that. Also 🍑😍😂
There are a ton of food similarities in the Philippines and in South East Asia and East Asia. We eat anything with rice just different preparations. We have a variety of noodles too from noodle soup to dry using different types of noodles. Chinese cuisine is what makes up around 1/4 of Filipino cuisine from noodles, siomai, siopao, stir fried vegetables, rice cakes, fish cakes, fried rice, lumpia, balut and so on w/c is a common everyday meal/food. Sushi has a Filipino counterpart w/c is the Kilawen, fresh fish soaked in vinegar. We also have different kinds of dried fish and smoked meat. So if you have tried food in those countries, you already had a taste of Filipino cuisine. Tho, one thing that is unique to us is the Sinigang (sour meat/fish/shrimp soup with vegetables using tamarind) which I think you can't find in other Asian countries. There's also lechon (roasted pig), kare-kare with bagoong (meat and vegetable with peanut soup base) etc. which you can only find in Filipino restaurants.
It's so fun to see you go thru items that I also see when we go grocery shopping! Some of these I have seen my mom buy but I havent yet for myself. Maybe I need to pick something out of habit on my next grocery!
Eyyyy. Mang Tomas pairs well with lechon! Like gravy? Leftover roast pork is stewed with garlic, onion, pepper, lime soda and Mang Tomas. Yum! Also, Beryl munching on Boy Bawang is 😂
There are 2 kinds of mang tomas The all-purpose sauce is not that good with lechon. The other one is the lechon sauce which is better for everything than the all purpose one hahaha

My local home area has a large arabic immigrant population which there's a lot of small arabic grocery businesses there.
I would love to see you try the shopping in Arabic grocery store idea! 👀
ok yes! It's on the list!
yes! love middle eastern stores. i only do middle eastern and indian (doesnt count cuz im indian.) not brave enough to do others rn @@BerylShereshewsky
OMG! When they came back out to give her something. I screamed! Because they literally gave one of the best things 😊 Such a treat!
Nagaraya nuts (roasted peanuts coated in a crunchy shell) would've been a good snack for you to pick up too! The adobo and spicy ones were my favorites but sadly I don't live anywhere near a Filipino grocery anymore.
Classic!
Everyone made the cut haha thats why it took me so long!!!
@@BerylShereshewsky These grocery store videos are my favorite! Keep up the good work! 😊
We (Filipinos) love adding sour/tangy flavors to rich and savory dishes, and spiced/flavored vinegars go sooo well with barbecued or fried meats.
What fun! Supermarkets are sacred space to me. Lol. I often have to beg my sweetie to come along because he knows it will be a long trip. I love to read all the labels and try new products from every country.
Yessss LOVED THIS! Please turn this into a series! You would love shopping at the Bengali supermarket
Thank you for doing filipino food, i've learned more than i've learned from my own family in 30 years!
This is such a great idea! I love going to grocery stores when I'm on vacation to help understand the local culture a bit more. You've inspired me to drag a Filipino friend along to a grocery store to learn about them and the food they grew up eating
Hahaha..nice
Nice that you remembered to get the Lucky Me Pansit Canton with bread. 😊 happy to have shared that recipe with you in your channel. Thanks for featuring Filipino food from a local grocery store. If you go back, get the Chocnut chocolate and put it on vanilla ice cream. Trust me, Beryl, you'll love it
I loved this new video idea! One of my favorite things to do is explore grocery stores when I travel!!! More please
Will we be getting a follow up episode with you trying everything? I really like this new series concept!
I was wondering the same! Although I suppose this can't be done with some that require preparation.
I have tried a lot of these things on the channel and I linked to those videos but I can def film a short perhaps with the ready made items! I used the frozen marinated meat and made a breakfast dish like Jeanelle rec the other night just personally and it was awesome
Mang Tomas is worth trying on camera 🤭
yes please do! @@BerylShereshewsky
I'm Filipino and I'm currently having a trip around Indonesian food so I love this new series! Salamat po for featuring the Philippines! Excited for Indonesia!
Filipino here. I love your energy! I felt like I was with you while you were shopping, I got more excited as you went through your list. I was a little bummed that you didn't get the Chicarron ni Mang Juan, you would've loved it but still, Jeanelle gave some great suggestions. Please make a *Part 2* buying all suggested items from this comment section. :D
I loved this - I am heading to my local Filipino store tomorrow with list in hand. Please do more this is fantastic 💜
Mabuhay! 🇵🇭
This is awesome! How about a Puerto Rican or Caribbean market? I'd also love a Persian or Israeli market.
Thank you for promoting our culture to the world. I'm a proud pilipino here. God bless you.❤
Wow. I remember 40 years ago when Phil-Am was the only place to get Filipino ingredients in NYC.
Please do more of such episodes... it was such an enriching experience
Hands down the most enjoyable episode! Oh the smile and joy and giddiness in the grocery store!!!!!!
I love that Beryl herself found some Coco Jam. It's such an underrated Filipino food and has a lot of uses.
Never tried it. But I ate too many coco product it probably tastes the same. Pan de manila is selling coco jams and Maybe I should at least get their smallest one to try.
I don’t know how you don’t have like 2 million followers Beryl. You’re the best!
I love how Jeanelle explains everything.
I wish I could like the video multiple times to really express how much I loved this episode.
I take literally everything on this video for granted because to buy all this stuff, all I need to do is go to the nearest store. It's fascinating to see how what's available here and considered as staples are novelties elsewhere.
I LOOOOOVE this. Should definitely become a series. Can't wait to see more.
Filipinos are the most hospitable beings on Earth! Always smiling, generous, and kind-hearted peeps. ❤❤❤
Two of my favorite creators in one video! Loved this video so much!
Thank your for showcasing Filipino food and cuisine, this was very enjoyable!
Very interesting! My favourite type of soy sauce (soy sauce with Calamansi) is from the Phillipines, the sourness perfectly compliments the saltiness.
I just found your channel yesterday and have been binge-watching your videos. My goodness, you are good at this! You are entertaining, informative, and just a lot of fun. You deserve such much larger audience.
Wow! A shopping spree with a freebie! Love it!
Thank you of introduce and patronizing our products..❤❤️❤️🇵🇭❤️❤️❤️
Love this idea! Want ALL the kinds of grocery store experiences!
She missed the MOST essential item you get at Filipino stores and that dried mango for the ride home. Filipino dried mangos just taste so much better than everywhere else.
I’m always curious about foreign stores but don’t know what to buy so I rarely enter. I hope this becomes a series.
Thank you Beryl for loving Filipino foods!
Jeanell killin' it with her solid recs!
You are nailing it with your programming. Love everything you are doing. Keep goinnnnngggggggg. ❤
Yes! So looking forward to your grocery tour series!
I love International Grocery Store videos. Please do more!
I did not skip adds... little way to say thank you for promoting our food culture... love you beryl ❤
I'm so excited about this new series!
7:32 when you contemplated of getting one or not, my heart skipped a beat. Please get one! Please get one! Beef tapa is good but Tocino is nice too. 😊
BERYL YO!! I've been trying to get your attention in the common section for a long time, but I think you really need to make a video on foods that are eaten during weddings around the world. I think this would be a very interesting video.
Is there a difference from non wedding foods?
Totally loved this .. was expecting a taste session and a small cook section as a followup.. do more of these pls
Beryl, you we're with Janelle she's a pro, great advice for Filipino foods 😀
This was an amazing list ! Pleaseee keep this series going , Beryl. I love going to ethnic grocery stores but I never ever know what to get.
It's so fun to see you go thru items that I also see when we go grocery shopping! Some of these I have seen my mom buy but I havent yet for myself. Maybe I need to pick something out of habit on my next grocery!
Ooooooh I love this series and will defo be tuning in for the next episodes!
The episode I've been waiting for 🎉 ❤ much love beryl ❤️🇵🇭
Eyyyy. Mang Tomas pairs well with lechon! Like gravy? Leftover roast pork is stewed with garlic, onion, pepper, lime soda and Mang Tomas. Yum!
Also, Beryl munching on Boy Bawang is 😂
This was the first thing which came to my mind: lechon ❤️
❤ leftover roasts( lechon,and/ or etc) made into lechon paksiw)
Mang Tomas is a commercial version of the lechon sauce which was originally made from pork liver, vinegar, bread crumbs and spices.
There are 2 kinds of mang tomas The all-purpose sauce is not that good with lechon. The other one is the lechon sauce which is better for everything than the all purpose one hahaha
OMG, sweet corn puffs!!!!
This was so fun! More in this series, for sure!
BERYL. YOU SMASHED IT. I COULD CRY. HELL FREAKING YES!!!!! A SUPERB IDEA. go everywhere you can!!!!! In every culture. I’m begging you. You don’t know what impact your channel has done for me. I love new foods. YOU are an INCREDIBLE RESOURCE AND RESEARCHER. You have made a difference in my life. You are up there with Anthony Bourdain!!! A gem. So happy you exist.

Purefoods is Originally a Filipino brand. For us you'll never regret buying a can it's so tasty.
Loved this episode. The shooting and editing makes it feel so FUN! 💜
Such an amazing video! I would also love to see more videos like this one. It would be fun to see this type of video for Italian, German, and Polish grocery stores if possible. Thank you so much in advanced!
6:38 woah, those calamansis are HUGE! its also my first time seeing that color. the one I know are smaller than that. they're also color green typically.
Fantastic addition to your channel! Thanks for the showcase of a wonderful culture and NYC! I’ve been making Sinigang for over 30 years and looking forward to trying all the foods you showcased. 😋
I love this idea! Keep shopping and sharing!
Beryl you forgot the DRIED MANGOES!!!
Beryl, you make me hungry all the time 😊. I Love seeing a young one so adventurous with food. Keep it going.
Wayside, good to see knife skills improving 😁
Now. I cannot wait for you to share videos cooking and eating all those goods. 😊
Oooh looks amazing! Currently searching for Filipino stores near me!
My heart is full of love.. Thank you both.. Im sooo happy.. You guys appreciate filipino foods ❤❤❤❤
This is really just such a fantastic show and a big help to people who shop at markets like the one you just visited. Thank you so much :)
I love it. Hoping for many more of this kind of video😃
Thank you both!
What a helpful and enjoyable video. So nice to have Janelle give you recommendations for things to try. I wouldn't know where to start and trial and error shopping can be way expensive! Hope you enjoy your new finds Beryl
🦋🦋🦋That looked like an awesome shopping trip! I haven't had Halo Halo for years!! So jelly!!
The Boy Bawang adobo flavor is the best! ❤❤❤
