Buko salad, is actually sort of a desert here. Its made when there are celebrations (new years, birthdays, christmas, etc). It's meant to be sweet and favored by children, we even have an Ice candy version of it.
Her description of how we eat the Buko Salad is on point. Like when you ate a lot in a Filipino party and you're eating your dessert salad and your uncle comes up to you and asks about your love life. Lol
I am part Filipiono. For the Filipino salad, I do not have the coconut because I am allergic. In my family, we make it with cream cheese, to make it thicker. We have this dish at parties. With leftovers we freeze it and eat it as ice cream.
In the US this is a very old dish called ambrosia salad. It was for the wealthy back then. It's very rare to see now but it was a big thing back in the day.
You can try making fruit salad or fruit macaroni, the ingredients are fruit cocktail(drained), all purpose cream, condensed milk, and cheese, add just a teaspoon of mayonnaise on it and chill it in the fridge...lola taught us this recipe and we make these during birthdays and christmas
Filipinos has a lot of salad but that salad serves for dessert treats.. we have eggplant ensalada, chicken macaroni salad, seafood salad basically a mix of edible ocean plants...
The salad from the Philippines reminds me of ambrosia salad which my grandmother used to make at holidays. Also, I got a craving for my other grandmother's potato salad from the Columbia salad. It is so strange how salads from other countries can evoke memories of home.
You have no idea how much joy it brings me to see you enjoying food from my culture (among many others). I was born in Canada but I'm a full-blood Filipino, and my parents did a very good job preserving the culture, so I eat Filipino food and speak tagalog. Some of my friends wouldn't be willing to try most of the food I eat, so to see someone who's not Filipino not only trying food from my culture, but actually liking it, makes me so so happy :)
There are lots good introductory Filipino foods. Tapa, Nilaga, Sinigang n Baboy/Baka. If the person is not new to casseroles, then you can introduce Menudo,Mechado, Afritada, and other sarsa squad
I love how you conceptualize your videos, tonne of research, cooks everything, shoots the video yourself, directs yourself, edits the video, is utterly charming on camera....and then you say you're not talented. I literally snorted when you said that.
When I saw that the video was about salads and the Philippines was one of the countries, all I could think of is what my Filipino father says about salads: "Salad is rabbit food." But then I watched the video and saw it was a fruit salad and then was like 100% accurate for the Philippines. I do love Filipino fruit salad! Thanks for the video and can't wait to see more!
Hey Beryl! As a Filipino born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, the buko salad you featured today brought me fond memories of my time in the Philippines!! Maraming salamat!! 😍💕
Try the "eggplant salad", "phillipine seaweed salad with pineapple", and the "atsara salad" which is a pickled unripe papaya and carrot with pineapple bits toppings
Beryl is spot on when she said " It's like a whipped cream salad", I don't know what else to describe Buko Salad. It's summer right know in the Philippines and I have a container of Buko Salad in the freezer. I like it super cold. Nata De Coco, the transparent colored ones are my favorite ingredient in the Salad..
Another Filipino salad to try is the macaroni salad which has chicken, pineapple, carrots and raisins and mixed together with mayonnaise. I’m sure you’ll like it 😊
Hi Beryl! :) I really loved this series (all in all: your effort for these dishes delights my day!) As a Swiss citizen I was a little sad about the Bavarian sausage. I'm aware that you can't buy cervelat (which is the Swiss sausage you need for a Wurstsalat) in the US, but in fact, this sausage really is the most important ingredient of the salad. For the next time, maybe a lyoner wurst will make it taste more like cervelat. I just wish I could have sent you one, so you could taste the real Wurstsalat (because It will be soooo different from the one you made). Thanks for your amazing videos, I love them and will for sure keep watching them :)
I as a Bavarian who doesn't even like "Wurstsalat" I was quite as shocked about her choice of sausage😶 It looked a lot like "Weißwurst" which I hope it wasn't. Even though it is a South German, Swiss and Austrian thing I have never ever seen anyone use that kind of sausage anywhere I've been. Where I am from most people use Lyoner or maybe Frankfurter. But never anything like what she used...
This! It is soooo important to do Wurstsalat with Cervelat. A very big no-no, using Bavarian sausage!!!! Even spam would have been a better replacement than this German thing.
was about to say the same. i think closest that comes to a cervelat in US is what you'd call bologna (baloney? not sure how it's spelled) which i think is available everywhere in the US. Beryl, you should definitely try this dish again with the right kind of sausage :)
The Issue is that native German Speakers call Deli Meats like Mortadella and Bologni Sausage, while they also call stuff like Bratwurst Sausage, in the US those are 2 different 2 type of things, the guy who send the video should have used the right English word, deli meat not sausage. Lyoner isn't a thing in the US either.
Hey Beryl, hey everyone, Here in France we often have a "salade chèvre miel" (ie honey goat salad). It's a sweet and salty salad. Basically, you take lamb's lettuce leaves and you mix it with nuts and raisins (almond and other dried fruits may also be used). Some families add chopped onions. For the dressing, mix 1 or 2 table spoons of honey, 1 table spoon of oil, 1 table spoon of vinegar and 1 table spoon of balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper. Put a few slices of goat cheese on a piece of bread and put it in the oven/microwave of 5-10minutes. Take the salade, pur de dressing, add the hot piece of bread, a bit of extra honey and envoy. Hope some of you may try this recipe !
9:42 This doesn't look like the proper herring for the salad. We, Russians, use salted or pickled herring, which is softer creamier in texture and less overwhelming in flavour. Anyway, thank you for the effort and for finally including a Russian dish
Is it just me or we, filipinos make the “usually-savory-food” into sweets or dessert? Dried fish with champorado Avocado with condensed milk Potato - ube halaya Salad - buko salad
Oh nice a swiss dish! But as a Swiss I need to clarify some things: Switzerland ist small, yes. But still, there big cultural differences between the language areas in Switzerland. So the shown Wurst-Salad actually is mostly fancied by the swissgermans. The french, italian und romansch part have their own dishes and favorised salads. For me as a person with roots in Ticino (italian part of Switzerland) I can tell you this about salads: Back in the days they where not that much cummon there. But my grandmother still made one we really enjoyed: red beans, parsley, cellery stalk, tuna (can) and a balsamico vinegar dressing. The ticinesian dishes are to north italian kitchen and are not that much similar to the swissgerman food culture. Same counts for the other language parts in Switzerland. ;)

When I first had lunch with my foster family, and my host mom asked me if I wanted to eat salad. And me as a Filipino, missing home immediately said YES. To my surprise, it was not the salad I was thinking, basically, I got a greenery salad 🤣 so yeah, totally not my imagination but that was my first try at the vegetable salad and it was good though😅
I came to know that salad is whole different dish after invasion of internet in India😂 In India it's just sliced cucumber, tomato and onions eaten along with main course
That's how we eat it too in my family except we add a little vinegar and sugar to taste so it won't be too sour. We usually eat this salad with fried fish. I'm Filipino-American. If there's no cucumber, sliced radish will do.
Hi. I'm Beryl and I'm a filipino. Other filipino party/fiesta salads would be buko pandan and the generic ones like chicken macaroni and chicken potato salads. But for ordinary days we make different savory and/or sour ensaladas and eat them as side dishes with our staple rice and protein meals. Depending on the region and the availability of the main ingredients we have various salads using seaweed, green mango, jackfruit, eggplant, green papaya, bitter melon, radish, salted egg, okra, etc.
Beryl grows with each of het videos! She tries different things, makes it more informative, improves editing and adds stuff. I am in love with Channel so much! Keep up the good work Beryl:)

The Indian version of salad is soaked lentils with chopped cucumber, grated fresh coconut, pomegranate , salt , green Chili, and topped with a tempering of oil and mustard seeds! It’s typically had in South of India as a side dish. Tastes delicious!
I'm so glad that Beryl pointed out the similarity between the clown salad and the hering salad. My family is from Chile (I grew up in Germany, though) and my fiancée's family is russian. We've noticed so many similarities when cooking! Particularly soups and stews. We're friends to another mixed nationalities couple (he's from Peru and she's from Ukraine). They've noticed the same thing. Many, many dishes are very alike! It's just cilantro or lime juice or maybe an ingredient like russian sausages or something traditional from the region that tells the dishes apart.
A dish called Russian salad, a potato salad like the Russian Olivye, is everywhere in Latin America and Spain with regional differences - it may have been the same path of dissemination.
as austrian it hurts my heart as well^^ we use something called knackwurst or extrawurst for wurstsalat. i cant imagine salat with a bavarian bratwurst :p
actually it does not look like a Bratwurst to me. I think this is a Weißwurst and they get boiled. I love wissen Salat and cant imagine eating it with a Weißwurst aka Bararian Bratwurst. 😆
It's funny that you mentioned the similarities between the russian and colombian salads cause in the dominican republic we make a salad similar to the colombian one (minus the tomato and lime and sub flash pickled onions) and it's called russian salad!
Yeah, sounds like a vegetarian version! We just don’t use limes in Russian cuisine. Do you have other “Russian salad”- potato/carrot/pickles/ham or meat/Mayo/canned pea? It seems to be popular around the world 😅
@@laula205 I just learned at a Frida Kahlo exhibition that she had a brief affair with Leon Trotsky in Mexico, so perhaps other Russian people came to Latin America around that time? Also the Jewish diaspora is pretty strong in Latin America so perhaps that's part of it.
In Spain we also have (little) Russian salad, ensaladilla rusa hahah it's kind of similar but not quite.. it's mayo, carrots, pees, potatoe, hard boiled egg and sometimes tuna... I think I'm realizing why it's called Russian salad lol 😂
Hilarious that you made the connection between the Colombian and the Russian salads. I lived in Venezuela for a little while many years ago. The Clown salad in Venezuela is called....Russian salad!
In Peru, too, it is called "Russian salad"! But we add peas and choclo (giant Andean corn) instead of tomato and onion. Russian salad is my favorite. 😋
In Poland there’s 2 salads you must try Olivier salad- various chopped vegetables with Mayo added to it Mizeria- Chopped cucumbers topped with sour cream and milk
It’s delicious. My sis in law is Filipina and when she visits the poor lady is cooking (you can’t stop her if you tried btw) up a storm each time. I work in healthcare and the potluck parties are always so good in the units that have lots of Filipinos working in it. :)
@@armpitification Filipino dish criteria are taste, budget and health in that order of importance. But we normally throw budget and health out of the window when cooking for others. I understand healthy eating habits but other people forget that the health part of the food only comes into play when people actually eats it. Jamie Oliver's disgusting egg fried rice with uncooked tofu and chili jam for example.
In Colombia we have a fruit salad similar to the filipino one. It has a lot of fruit, yougurt and cheese, sometimes even ice cream. Also, there's another fruit salad called Salpicón, that is basically a lot of chopped fruit mixed with a red or orange kola, specifically colombiana or kola román.
0: Nunca he comido salpicón con gaseosa. Al menos en Cali, siempre se hace con el frutiño de salpicón. Definitivamente le agregaré gaseosa la próxima vez
Here in Spain we have salads with legumes: -Lentlil salad: with lentils, bacon, onion and peppers -Chickpea salad: With chickpeas, couscous, feta cheese, olives, tuna. carrots etc -Bean salad: With beans, tuna, peppers, olives etc And abundant olive oil Also, in Spain we have something similar to the herring salad. Its potatoes, tuna or shrimp, mayo, carrots, egg, peas etc. We call it Ensaladilla rusa (Russian little-salad) and tradition says it comes from the russian/soviets that fought in the Spanish civil war against the nationalists from the coup d’état in aid of the Republic.
Spanish salad are some of my fave in the world- made with healthy, fresh ingredients and beautiful flavors. I hope Beryl will feature these in the next episode!
Funny thing we have a similar Salad in El Salvador and we call it Ensalada Rusa. I went to Spain when I was pregnant and couldn’t for the life of me find healthy salads. Also because I was pregnant I was nauseous smelling the meats and breads. Once we went to Morocco I was so much happier because all I wanted to eat while pregnant was salads and fruits and they had lots of it.
Gosh after looking at the dessert salad from the Philippines I feel like you I need to tell you about the fruit salad from India. It used to be really popular at parties where I come from (Gujarat) and it’s basically several different fruits in a custard creme.
hey beryl! here in Maharashtra in india we have the koshimbir which is essentially a salad with tadka common ingredients being onions and tomatoes and groundnut powder. It is mostly served like a side dish for a full meal. you can give it a try! lovee your videos!
Yesss in Karnataka it is kosambari made using cucumber, soaked lentils, other vegetables like carrots and corn and sometimes fruits like pomegranate and it is given a tadka of mustard, cumin, asafoetida, curry leaves and coriander.
@@PlatePrintsOnTable yeahh sure So u can make varieties of kosambari Like using lentils, using vegetables, sprouted grains and sometimes the fruits like pomegranate are added. I'll start with the easy one, using soaked chana dal(split chickpeas) and moong dal (soaked split green gram). U can add cucumbers-finely chopped and add vegetables like grated carrot, onion, corn kernels and some pomegranate seeds and grated fresh coconut. Add some salt, lime juice and green chilli and make tempering by heating coconut/groundnut oil, adding a teaspoon of mustard seeds and cumin and a pinch of asafoetida, few coriander leaves. And tada! Ur kosambari is ready
The fruit salad is very similar to the traditional 'Ambrosia' salad that was always a part of my family's get togethers. I am going to have to try that version!!

@@goldenbear310 you can actually find those, too... I know they sell them, at least seasonally, in the keyfood supermarket near me, and ive seen them sold in some produce carts in the Morningside area in Manhattan. 😎
In Sri Lanka, we make a fruit salad by combining the tropical fruits: pineapple, mangoes, bananas and papaya with a bit of sugar, salt, vanilla (not essential) and lime juice. It is typically served with vanilla ice cream on the side or eaten on its own.
Im from the phils, and i love your kind of fruit salad, coz i love the mixture of lemon sugar and salt.i made a lot of veg salad using this kind of dressing.
In the Phils, we make a also another fruit salad with mangoes, honeydew, melon, apple, grapes and pineapple with evap and condensed milk. Best served chilled as well.
you can legit get wurst salat everywhere in Switzerland! It's a staple! But make sure you specify 'wurst käse salat' (sausage and cheese salad) otherwise you'll only get the sausage and no cheese ://
I like how your channel is about food connecting it to culture because I think that is one of the best ways to understand a culture. The other is language.

I grew up with Filipino Fruit Salad where you have to balance the evaporated and condensed milk sweetness and thickness as like it's sauce (or if you can afford the whipped cream or creamer to replaced the evap, go! You have to have a freshly grinded coconut meat, nata de coco, macapuno (its just like coconut meat but lighter, sweetened and softer)
Hello from Croatia Here is the salad my grandma used to make: Get a big head of lettuce, On a stove heat the vinegar (they used apple or alcohol one), put chopped bacon in hot vinegar (salty, smoked and dried kind) Let it "fry" a bit and pour it over the fresh roughly chopped lettuce. Eat while stil hot :) It is best over the winter sorts of lettuce because it softens it. I love sour and salty taste with a hint of smoke aroma.
In Sweden we have a salad similar to the Filipino dessert salad. It’s a mayonnaise fruit salad called “Mimosa salad”. It contains mustard and we eat it as a side dish, typically to cold meat at Christmas. Quite strange!
Filipinos have that salad too! It's usually made with macaroni pasta, mayonnaise (can be a little bit of mustard), carrots, and raisins. It's usually a side dish as well.
I'm a filipino.when we say salad here most of the time we don't refer to salad with lettuce, cucumber, tomato and dressing, etc type of salad..😂 we associate salad with dessert type of salad we always have during celebrations especially christmas.buco salad, fruit salad, macaroni salad are the most popular ones😊 i love them
So I'm from Wisconsin but live in Taiwan and have quite a few Filipino friends at my church and they make buko salad quite often... It hits the spot when you're craving a midwestern dessert salad, but the textures are COMPLETELY different! They put a ton of chewy things in and add a mild cheese to it! It's much more of a chewing experience than midwestern dessert salads haha
I‘m from the southwest of Germany (pretty near Switzerland) and Wurstsalat is probably my favorite childhood food. It reminds me of hot summer nights and helping my grandparents or mom prepare it - blood sausage all the way! (And sometimes my grandpa‘s favorite Swiss cheese, Romadur). So so happy to see this here!
@@Ann-xk3rw same! (I'm Swiss.) It's definitely a summer dish. Also something people bring to family potlucks, camping etc. Some also eat it as a side dish when grilling even more sausage. 😅 (I personally need to change the recipe a little due to dietary restrictions but... Still, it's the taste of summer. Idk why😅)
The sausages for the swiss salad are the wrong one's, Cervelat as Hi mention is correct but they are smoked and the texture is similar to a Frankfurter. You can also add boiled egg for garnish.
The only salad i can relate to is the filipino one Btw we call the heavy cream keshta in arabic, its a beloved dip for us with berries and a main ingredient in sweets such us basbosa and kunafeh for us in bahrain
The only weird salad I can think of is ambrosia salad, which pops up at potlucks and funeral luncheons from time to time. Local to me would be the Michigan salad, which is a pretty basic green leaf salad with dried cherries, blue cheese, vinnaigrette(especially raspberry or mustard), apples, sometimes chicken, often walnuts.
The last salad is what our family has called ambrosia salad the only difference is we use sour cream/whip cream mix and add chopped walnuts and marshmallows.
We have in Brazil the russian salad, that is basically beets, potatoes, carrots, onions, mayo, if you like onions and parsley. Nice and cold on a summer day, really refreshing. And we have our potato salad, just remove the beets and add peas. Salpicão is a type of salad. With pulled chicken breast, a mix of beets, carrots ( use a salamander to shred it) onions, tomatoes, some people use chipped hardboiled egg, and use the cilantro, green onions and parsley. It is a staple on the majority of the holidays, like Christmas, New Years, easter... Any family gathering lol..

In the US this is a very old dish called ambrosia salad. It was for the wealthy back then. It's very rare to see now but it was a big thing back in the day.

The salad from the Philippines reminds me of ambrosia salad which my grandmother used to make at holidays. Also, I got a craving for my other grandmother's potato salad from the Columbia salad. It is so strange how salads from other countries can evoke memories of home.
When I was in Guam that Filipino salad was at every party ...... and it was amazing every time !

Me, russian and swiss with family from mexico, feeling very represented😌
Beryl is spot on when she said " It's like a whipped cream salad", I don't know what else to describe Buko Salad. It's summer right know in the Philippines and I have a container of Buko Salad in the freezer. I like it super cold.
Nata De Coco, the transparent colored ones are my favorite ingredient in the Salad..
Another Filipino salad to try is the macaroni salad which has chicken, pineapple, carrots and raisins and mixed together with mayonnaise. I’m sure you’ll like it 😊

And cheese , and onion, don't forget to add those too 🙂
We also have a chicken salad.

Hi Beryl! :) I really loved this series (all in all: your effort for these dishes delights my day!)
As a Swiss citizen I was a little sad about the Bavarian sausage.
I as a Bavarian who doesn't even like "Wurstsalat" I was quite as shocked about her choice of sausage😶
It looked a lot like "Weißwurst" which I hope it wasn't.
Buko salad is almost identical to the Ambrosia that I grew up with my family serving with big meals served on holidays.
What's an Amborsia salad? Care to share? :)
Yeah, Im from the Philippines and we also have Ambrosia.
Hey Beryl, hey everyone,
Here in France we often have a "salade chèvre miel" (ie honey goat salad).
I used to make this a lot. Sometimes I'd make a vinaigrette with a the preserves or jam left in the jar. Tasty sweet and sour dressings, and no waste.
The dressing sounds yum. I am gonna make it 😁
9:42 This doesn't look like the proper herring for the salad. We, Russians, use salted or pickled herring, which is softer creamier in texture and less overwhelming in flavour. Anyway, thank you for the effort and for finally including a Russian dish

Same counts for the other language parts in Switzerland. ;)
