Ни в заморской стране, ни в восточной;
Выходил и поглядывал хмуро;

Oh how different in days bygone
The heaven and earth conjured each other
Amazing wonders were seen then
Miraculous things happened on their own
Having forgotten the Golden Horde
The motley thunder of the Chinese plain
A winged serpent, in a an empty garden
Often hid on May midnights.
And when maidens, to gaze at the moon
Had come out, treading nobly,
He immediately snatched up one,
And soared up, and rushed back.
Oh how shined, how blinded, and how beamed
The brass armour under the ravenous moon
And with a silvery tingling, how flew
The measured squawks over the wooded Rus'
"Verily such beauties, such swans,
With a skin milky-white,
Nowhere and never have I seen
In the lands Oriental nor beyond the seas.
But not one of them has set foot
In my mighty hall in Lahore.
Their all die on the way
Their bodies I throw in the Caspian sea.
To sleep on the bottom, amongst the horrors of the deep,
Why do the madwomen prefer it,
Than to be in my mighty embrace,
In my proud princely bedchamber?
And at times I envy the fate,
Of a lad with a white shepherd's fife
There on the meadow, where a maidens group,
Laugh so merrily at his jests?
Having heard these calls, Vol'ga*
Has come, and looked sternly
Pulling a string on the horns
Of an ancient Byelovezh aurochs....
