It's still the highest-grossing animated movie (adjusted for inflation) beating out frozen by a long shot. And it's the 10th highest-grossing movie of all time. It's kind of impressive considering it was made and released during the depression.
"was this groundbreaking?" absolutely. people had generally only seen little animated shorts, like silly symphonies, and didn't consider cartoons as a storytelling medium. people attempted to create films like it afterwards, but disney pioneered the multiplane camera, and had a kind of rotoscoped and fluid animation that was difficult to match in its technical skills. after snow white was proven to be an instant classic (it made clark gable cry!), consumers looked at cartoons differently, and those in the business attempted to follow the strides into the future disney was making. for a quick comparison, check out "goddess of spring," which was an short that won an oscar a few years prior to snow white, and just look how rubbery and floaty everything is, and then look at how snow white is animated. the difference is astonishing.
This was Disney's first feature length film .He'd been making cartoons since the early 1920s. This was a gamble because they didn't know if audiences would sit through a cartoon that was over an hour long. Fortunately, it was a sensation and made Disney and his studio even more famous. This was followed by "Pinocchio" and "Fantasia". In 1939, the Fleischer Brothers, who were responsible for the Popeye and Betty Boop cartoons ,made their own feature length cartoon, "Gulliver's Travels".
As you probably know, the Fleischer Brothers' *Gulliver's Travels* (1939) beat Disney's *Pinocchio* (1940) into theaters to become the second full-length, full color animated feature film with synchronized sound. Two years later, the Fleischers followed up with a second animated feature film, *Mr. Bug Goes to Town* * (1941). Both films were ambitious attempts to challenge Disney's supremacy in the genre, and are worth a look. The Fleischers also made a highly-regarded series of *Superman* cartoons.
This story dates way back the 14-15th century and these tales originally are made for kids and quite gruesome to teach kids a lesson through a story and disney made a family friendly version. As for the time of release this movie was released during the Great Depression which actually reflects why this movie is hopeful and made to bring hope to the viewers and very simple to let movie goers enjoy the film and use it as an escape of hard times. Some people forget the times when these movies and stories where made and make modern judgements without looking at the history. This movie was also very groundbreaking an animated full length film was not yet possible at the time. They have animation but not a full length story telling. Which is very new and I read somewhere that people in the theatres cried and give the movie a standing ovation. It was really a head of its time.
Exactly thank you please don’t hate me for what I’m about to say, but I’m so sick and so tired of viewers that watch these movies and they’re so busy looking at them through the goggles of modern day that they can’t just accept that they are still good movies I love Snow White and Cinderella and aurora and so I wanted someone I freaking love them. I don’t care. I just love them.
Many of the Disney stories are based on old fairy tales, often dating back to the Middle Ages. The originals were generally gruesome - Disney cleaned them up. Disney also was the one who added all the helpful animals, like in this one, or the mice and birds that can sew a fashionable dress for Cinderella. This concept finally gets spoofed several times in more recent films, like Enchanted and Shrek.
08:40 it was REALLY avantguarde, but even more the ones from the 50's , those ones were literally impossible (Cinerella was the one they lacked a bit though, lol, i dont know why, Snow white is more adavanced than Cinerella in some scenes, maybe they didnt have money )
cinderella was made to bail the company out of bankruptcy after world war 2- they even marketed it as "the best since snow white" and were hoping on making absolute bank on that. they definitely didn't have a ton of money to make cinderella with!
She is supposed to be only 14 yo and the prince appears to be in his 20's or so, a bit creepy from our perspective. And ALL of Hollywood for decades stuck to the idea of instant love - she sees the prince once, doesn't even introduce herself to him, he finds her, kisses her and they live happily even after.
Disney's Wiki says the Prince is only 18. For comparison, in the 1920s my grandmother married my grandfather when she was 15 and he was 21 (he also proposed, and she accepted, on the first day they met). Of course, in the medieval time period in which the movie is set, this would have been even less remarkable.
I’m sorry I’m probably gonna sound like a killjoy and I don’t care because when you watch these movies and when I say you, I’m talking in general, you cannot look at every little word every little movement. Every little jester looks me gesture. Excuse me gesture you can’t look at all that stuff through 2023/2024 eyes and say oh well that didn’t blow blah blah blah, except the fact that amazing and move on with your freaking life this is a damn good movie and if it weren’t for this movie, there would be no Disney.
